ICM Forum's Favourite Directors 2018 (Due Jan 3rd)

by PeacefulAnarchy
It's time to make out favourite directors list again. Submit an imdb list, or a list of imdb urls if you can't make an imdb list, with as many directors as you like. You have until end of day Monday Dec 31stThurs Jan 3 to submit your lists. Deadline extended to Thursday.

Half life will be 29, like last year.

I will assume your list is ranked unless you specify otherwise.
Other than a ranked list you can submit your list in one of the following ways:
- Unranked: All directors get the same number of points.
- Partially ranked: Top X is ranked, rest is unranked
- Group ranked: You have to specify the groups that go together, all films in the group get the same number of points. (eg: 11-20, 21-30, 31-50, 51-100)

I want to try to be consistent with directorial teams so we'll pick a director to represent each pair, the first one alphabetically. If there are any pairs that I missed let me know and I'll update this list:

Coen Bros: Ethan Coen
Powell & Pressburger: Michael Powell
Dardenne Bros: Jean-Pierre Dardenne
Maysles Bros:Albert Maysles
Huillet & Straub: Danièle Huillet

Not sure how the "paired directors" are defined, but there's the Pangs (Oxide Pang & Danny Pang). They directed many films together, but they also both made solo project, so not sure it applies.

Always fun to go through the directors-list on Criticker. Some personal stats:
- There are 550 directors of which I've seen at least 4 movies.
- The lowest rated director is Edward D. Wood Jr. with an average of 2.25/10 for 4 movies.
- The highest rated director is Masaki Kobayashi with an average of 9.571/10 for 7 movies.
- The director of which I've seen the most movies is Georges Méliès with 205 movies. That is one more than my checks on this list so my OCD is going crazy right now.
- The lowest rated director with more than 10 movies seen is Jean-Marie Straub with an average of 4.385 with 13 movies seen. I blame Rosenbaum for this. Not surprisingly, the second director in this stat is Danièle Huillet with an average of 4.455 with 11 movies seen.
- Sorted by most movies seen, the list illustrates I don't really focus on directors. The directors I've seen more than 25 movies of are mostly people who put out a lot of shorts. The exceptions are just a few big names like Hitchcock, Scorsese and Lang.

I tried to add the couple
Phil Lord, Christopher Miller
last time

I would aslo make sense to use Terry Jones for the Gilliam/Jones-pairing, as there are a bigger chance that some might vote for Gilliam as sole director.

I don't know that I'll get the chance to re-work this for this year, holiday stuff and all, and the fact that my second computer, where I stored lots of lists and stats and shit, has died and isn't probably worth fixing , and alas I don't have a very recent update on the main computer. Do your backups regularly folks! I probably don't have to tell y'all that though, you're probly all a lot smarter than me when it comes to this shit...

Nah. One year ago I dropped my external when it was turned on. Had my complete music collection which I had assembled over 12 years. All gone in one moment. <_<

Ah that sucks. I have been gradually accumulating more drives as back-ups - gotta have more than one copy of all those Lav Diaz films - but I still have plenty of stuff that could bite the bullet if something goes wrong. Maybe that'll be New Years goal, backing up everything I really care about.

My top 100 directors + Runner Ups

The list is close to what it was last year, but Greenaway is a new entry I added just a couple of days ago. Have found him incredibly fascinating for a long time, but somehow exploring his broader filmography never quite happened. Up to 7 entries now I felt comfortable adding him, and will try to catch up with The Belly of an Architect, Prospero's Books and The Baby of Mâcon as these look like films who could propel him much further up.

A few old Hollywood directors may also keep plunging down, as I am not as enchanted by their work as I once was. They have likely kept their high position due to good memories from when I first got into films + their massive ouvres. Not that masters like William Wyler, Howard Hawks and Michael Curtiz will ever drop off.

Ranked: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls047749983/

My ranking is done purely statistics based. I took my ratings for all movies by directors of which I've seen at least 5 movies and calculated the average rating. However, this punishes directors I took the effort to watch complete filmographies, since their duds drag the average down. So, the final score is calculated by the following formula:

score = μ(rating) + (# films - μ(# films) / 4 * σ(# films))

The resulting list with ratings can be found in the spoilers below.
SpoilerShow
1. 9.45 Tarkovsky, Andrei - 9.53 average in 7 films
2. 9.31 Bergman, Ingmar - 8.39 average in 26 films

I definitely do not agree with the complete ranking, since my rating of a movie depends on more than the director alone, but it was a fun way to construct the list.

My ranking is done purely statistics based. I took my ratings for all movies by directors of which I've seen at least 5 movies and calculated the average rating. However, this punishes directors I took the effort to watch complete filmographies, since their duds drag the average down. So, the final score is calculated by the following formula:

score = μ(rating) + (# films - μ(# films) / 4 * σ(# films))

I definitely do not agree with the complete ranking, since my rating of a movie depends on more than the director alone, but it was a fun way to construct the list.
Nerd talk time. Why that formula, and where did you get it?

I'm asking because I constructed by list similarly and with similar motivations, but I went with a Bayesian average to account for differences in the numbers of films watched - this penalizes directors for whom I've seen fewer films by pulling their ratings back towards my global average. But your formula seems to take the opposite approach and provides a bit of a bonus to directors for whom you've seen a ton of films. Just curious about your reasoning, as I may want to adopt this approach in the future.

I can't really exactly remember.

I used the Bayesion average before. I calculated it now again for my data and I simply don't like the result. It doesn't give enough of a bonus to my heavily watched directors. Bergman still is #2, but Kurosawa drops to #31, Hitchcock drops all the way to #184, Spielberg to #70, Allen to #154. I think I experimented a bit myself and made this formula a long while ago. It has been part of my excel sheet for a few years at this point.

I think I started with the raw average rating and looked for a way to give heavily watched directors a boost. My first intuition was some Z-score (x-μ / σ ) based modification, which I use regularly to normalize data in my research, could work. That was too much and then I introduced the constant 4 to weaken the effect. I played around with the constant 4 (tried 3 and 5) today before finalizing the list, but still felt 4 resulted in the best ranking.

Since this is not a scientific endeavor, result based tweaking your formula is totally fine, so no need to stick to some scientifically proven formula. Play around until you find something that works for you.

So this is super cool. Now I want to play around with formulas to see what I get. Of course, I'm working with a much smaller data set, as I've seen and rated far fewer films than you have, but this will still be fun. I actually started tracking directors because of this poll last year.
