Year-by-Year Polls: 1957 - RESULTS!

#1

Post by gromit82 » November 19th, 2018, 2:02 am

Here are the results and some statistics for the 1957 Year by Year Poll.

Total ballots: 58
Total films mentioned: 225

For this year, I will be highlighting as "obscure" those films with under 500 votes from IMDb users.

In this poll, for ranked ballots, the top-ranked film received a number of points equal to the number of films on the ballot, with each succeeding film receiving one fewer point. For unranked ballots, each film received an equal share of the total points that would have been allotted to the ballot had it been ranked.

In the table below, the first number is the rank, the second is the number of votes the film received, and the third is the total number of points received.

Taking note of this. I love several Saslavsky's films (Historia de una noche, La dama duende, La corona negra) but haven't seen any of his French works.

In other respects I must say Corman was robbed. The Undead is funnier and more atmospheric than anything in the top 10. :P

Yes, once the 2018 poll is over, we're going to do 1932 after that.

Thanks Gromit

Must say CRANES ARE FLYING the only surprise in the top ten - not seen by me but aware of it.

Great to see LES LOUVES even get a mention - ditto LES ESPIONS (Less inaccessible but possibly superior).

Shame so little love for FUNNY FACE - musicals obviously don't cut it here any better than they did on imdb1. And none at all for PAL JOEY? :verymad:

An Affair to Remember is so underrated. It's the best romance movie I have ever seen. Not that that says so much tho since my watch count is not all that high yet, but I have seen a good quantity of romance in recent years and nothing has beat it so far

I was surprised it wasn't higher. I saw it so often in someone's top 5, that for a while I was even thinking it could beat 12 Angry Men.

Yes I noticed your comment during the ballot B) - nice that there ARE surprises though  - it was the second most popular number 1 choice but one of least viewed (I'm assuming not too many haters or indifferent) - If it was seen by more people (only 33 voted for it against the 40 ish viewings other top 5 placing films got ) it would likely have done even better. Clearly I need to bump it up the TO WATCH list.

KANAL was the other Foreignian biggie I forgot about (again unseen by me). Perhaps understandably with my predictions and speculations about final tally and individual positions therein, I'm on stronger ground with the ones I know.

A bit disappointed by the winners, not because they're not great films, but because, especially in the case of 12 Angry Men it was just too predictable. Had hoped The Seventh Seal would be a bit more competitive.

My highest unseen is Resnais' short Toute la mémoire du monde. Will set off the time to watch it. Love Resnais, but am generally not too enticed by short films.

In the top 40 I am also missing La casa del ángel, Quantermass 2, Plunder Road and The Smallest Show on Earth. The first has not really been on my radar, but it is now. The others I am not too sure of, though the Dearden also jumps onto my extended watchlist.

Thanks gromit! As usual, not much surprising at the top. I'm regularly disappointed that shorts don't do any better than they do - and thanks for the separate list - but that just shows that many people simply aren't interested in them, or aren't going to include them on their lists, and no way to change that really. Top unseen by me is the Masumura at #20, which I had hoped to get to but didn't, ditto Pyaasa. Will be watching Plunder Road in the next few days; have to look into Ni liv which is the highest-ranked that I haven't heard of.

Quite many voted for Whay's Opera, Doc though. I think it's more about people not focusing on shorts when making a list like this rather than not liking them.
I guess that's what the Shorts poll are for

Thanks for the result! Great top ten! 12 Angry Men did come out on top. The Cranes Are Flying ranked #1 by many, and could have ranked higher. I wonder if it is the case that people either like it or not liking it, or that not enough people have seen it.

At least for me, The Cranes are Flying is great, and I'm glad it did so well - it was my #4. But it's hard to compete with my all-time favorite movie, 12 Angry Men...

Thanks for the results Gromit,I'm happy to see the fantastic The She-Wolf be in the top 50,and I'm surprised how close the two Bergman's are to each other.
