I don't think I'd ever looked at the previous versions of this list - I'd have been surprised at the placement for Lola rennt before, frankly. Well, it's the newer films where I tend to be further away from the mainstream iCM taste I guess. Not a terrible film but top 5 is just crazy, like putting a NOLAN film in a top 5 of...oh wait.

Haha, yeah, it's cute, fun and a good effort, but odd to see it jump like that. Then again, it used to be or may still even be on the IMDb top 250. I guess it is creative enough to feel fresh and cool, but I figured it might have died down a bit by now. What a jump.

It belongs with films like The Usual Suspects and The Matrix in my particular weird brain - lots of surface, not much below it really - and yes I know people will vehemently disagree with me on The Matrix in particular. But these are all pretty minor genre efforts IMO and there are similar, much better, less well-known examples in each case that do much of what they do better. I'm not at all surprised that teenagers and 20somethings at the time they came out loved them, but I guess I'm a little surprised that they've hung on so long. Then again many folks will say the same thing about Star Wars to me, so fair is fair. And obviously in the case of this particular film, winning the Lola award indicates that it had some significant critical reputation and was not (is not) seen as just a juvenile crowd-pleaser.

Thank you for hosting Lonewolf. This went so much faster than expected, and was a fun ride. Have a lot to catch up on. Mostly post-80s. My biggest hole is Seidl and Petzold. Not seen anything from either.

Yeah, another thanks for the fine hosting work LW. I guess I should get around to giving Metropolis another watch one of these days - still have not seen the restored longer version. Maybe that's what gave it the boost?

Yeah, another thanks for the fine hosting work LW. I guess I should get around to giving Metropolis another watch one of these days - still have not seen the restored longer version. Maybe that's what gave it the boost?
I saw the restored version two years ago and it did get a big jump in my appreciation. It's a much better and coherent movie with the extra material.

Thank you for hosting Lonewolf. This went so much faster than expected, and was a fun ride. Have a lot to catch up on. Mostly post-80s. My biggest hole is Seidl and Petzold. Not seen anything from either.
Something I've seen that you haven't! I've seen two of the three from Petzold on this list - Barbara which was very good but perhaps not anything that we haven't seen before, and Phoenix which I thought was pretty remarkable, especially for Nina Hoss who is in some of Petzold's other films - so those are very much priorities for me. I haven't seen any Seidl either and something about him just doesn't sit well with me, I don't have a feeling I'm really going to like his work. Something uneasy. But then again getting over that uneasiness often leads to new favorites for me so who knows.

Disappointed about Münchhausen in particular; for that matter I don't think Gilliam's or Zeman's versions are as well-loved around here as I might hope. YOU PEOPLE HAVE NO IMAGINATION!!!

Pretty weak showing by the Experimental Mafia judging by all those drop-offs.

Just nitpicking, especially since the movie fell off the list anyway, but I don't think Rainer Werner Fassbinder was already making movies in 1924.

Eh, I dunno, Tscherkassky and Fischinger did well. Straub-Huillet and Khittl got some points. But how many Martin Arnold fans were there besides me?

Thanks, LW. Some nice surprises in the end: Metropolis at #1 and the best German film of the 90s in the top 5.

That's some really surprising and extreme drop offs, Münchhausen being the saddest, with Klassenverhältnisse being the oddest, as I'm a new voter on it. I suppose many of last years voters didn't add their lists.

Deeply disturbed by the idea of Run Lola Run being a better film than The White Ribbon, I'm going to pretend that never happened. Thanks Lonewolf!

Did no one vote for Paris, Texas? I would have expected it to pop up at around the r100 mark with like 5 votes. :D

Run Lola Run - Dunno why you guys are so surprised, it's just the kind of run of the mill hype movie™ you would expect to see on the top 5 of a mainstream-as-hell iCM list.

Ekstase - very late to the discussion. I also saw it recently and was surprised how good it was, but I suppose I wouldn't have known since I had never actually heard anything about film itself, just the raunchy Hedy Lamaar scenes. I took an interest in it because of the documentary about her, glad I ended up watching it.

There was a mistake in the excel code lower in the list. Corrected it now.

I wouldn't consider that a German movie, myself.

Me neither, and I didn't vote for it, but surely it's more German than, say, Certified Copy is Iranian.

Seen: 72/200
Voted for: 55ish, from my list of 62
Position of my #1: #14 (White Ribbon)
Highest unseen: #22 (World on a Wire)
My highest ranked film not to make it: Germany Pale Mother (this really needs to be a World Cup film or something). Two others in my top 10 (Mademoiselle Paradis and Despair)
