Meine Liste
Germania anno zero is 100% Italian film.
Yet it is eligible as "German spoken movies from other countries are are also eligible". Additionally it's coproduced by Germany.

Came here to give 100 points to Stroszek. The list is a work in progress. Top three movies are ranked.

I recommend The Nomi Song, seems that only me and Ebbywebby have watched it. I was brought to tears to find out how the sweet little elfin was treated by "friends" and co-workers in the final days of his life. Astonishing doc.

What about films split into 2 parts like Olympia or Lang's Indian Epic or Niebelungen (or in theory the first Dr. Mabuse too but IMDB lists this as one)?

Will post list shortly. Unofrtunately I have only little time and will probably not have internet the next weeks.

We have always treated such titles separately. When there are two pages on IMDb, you can vote for either one or both and rank them as you please. They will be treated as individual votes.

Yes, it depends what IMDb says. If it’s one entry it counts as one movie, if they are separate entries they count as separate movies.

So I guess I'm done. The ranking is a little patchy but the list is ranked:

https://www.imdb.com/list/ls040178826/

@joachimt - thanks for the response. I ranked them right next to each other now because for me they are virtually equally good. I mean practically they were shot as one and only split for distribution, not like sequels today, can't really see a big difference between them.

I was unsure about a few of them being german. If you all find they aren't feel free to remove:
-Posession (1981)
-Ludwig II (1973)
-Dans la ville blanche (1983) (almost too international to count as anything)
-Too Early/Too Late (1982) - did not include this but would be top 30 or top 20 if I would. Would probably consider it french afterall.
-Lola Montez (1955) - did not include, would probably be top 30 or top 40. Would consider it french.

Also I'm fairly sure Urmel aus dem Eis (1969) is a mini-series. Feel free to remove if it isn't but IMDB only lists 4 episodes and I don't recall it being longer than 2 hours in total.

As I said I will probably not have internet to revise anything or comment but I'm excited to see the list when it's finished.

Edit: Also thanks Lonewolf, only saw your reply just now.

@Posession discussion

I only saw this just now and decided to include it (oddly it is now my new #1). I find that afterall german is still the most fitting description for this film. It is a german/french coproduction shot in Berlin by a polish director with one lead actor from France and one lead actor from the UK, most of the co-stars are germans, most of it is spoken in english and the crew seems mostly german but also french and polish. I mean if it's not german it's french I guess.

Finally finished changing and trimming down my list to a top 100. Not sure how I feel about all German speaking films being included, as opposed to only focusing on Germany. Not that I'm against it, I just feel Germany at some point deserves a list entirely of its own.

Yes, but could the forum come up with a decent Austria-only and Switzerland-only list as well?

No, I get what you're saying, and I feel the same way about Iran within the context of the middle eastern poll, and I'm sure some people want polls for each individual larger Latin American country. I guess it just comes down to how many voters there are and how meaningful the polling would be.

Haven't even started on my list yet, not sure I will do one. While I've seen a fair amount of German cinema it feels very limited to me - half of it is silent era and the rest is nearly all from the 70s-80s. And even in those areas I'm still hugely lacking - haven't seen much Fassbinder for example including Ali and Berlin Alexanderplatz. I know a lot of people aren't bothered so much by their own inadequacies but that's just one of my things, I really had to force myself to make a list for the southeast Asia poll and probably wouldn't have if other lists weren't just as skimpy as my own.

Like I said to Gloede I haven't done a list yet and don't know if I will (if I even have time) but Possession will probably be on it if I do one. I thought I had included it in my French list but it's not there. Damn Zulawski for making this so complicated, didn't he know that almost 40 years later people would be arguing over the nationality of one of his films for an obscure internet forum poll?

That's indeed why last time and I again this time didn't limit the poll to Germany only. Those few German spoken movies from Austria, Switzerland or from other countries might as well be represented in this list. It's not France or Spain were almost half of a total other continent speaks the same language. ;)

India and Central-Asia is another example of this dilemma.

Is it just me or has this poll slipped below the radar a little this month? Turnout seeems a little low.

Not really a fan of it being an Anschluss poll btw. Feels wrong that some German gems might fail to make the cut because of some shoehorned in Haneke films for an example.

Yeah, seems like it's been overshadowed by the <400 results reveal.

It appears that zzzorf broke the link by changing the name of his list.

Whoops my bad, that is exactly what happened. I took language out of my title when I added a few English speaking German movies into my list (like Neverending Story). The link from Sol is the correct one.
