World Cup, Season 3, Match 2C: Germany vs Hungary vs Lebanon (Oct 7th)

This is match 2C of the third season of iCM Forum's Film World Cup.

Voting Rules:
- You must watch all 3 films before you vote.
- To vote, rank the 3 films from most favorite to least favorite. (note: you're ranking the individual films, not the countries)

Voting deadline = Oct 7th
Countdown till deadline

The country that ends at 1st place proceeds to the next round. The ranking of the match will be decided using these rules:
- Ranked by lowest average ranking.
- In case of a tie between two movies, head-to-head determines the winner (how many people thought A>B and how many thought B>A).
- In case there's still a tie after the previous rule or there is a tie between all three movies, most #1-votes determines the winner.
- Still a tie? Fewest #3-votes determines the winner.
- Still a tie? The match will have a 3 day extension (except when the tie is only between #2 and #3).
Here's a quick summary of how the tournament worksShow
We start with 48 films from 48 countries. Each country has a manager who determines which movie will be watched. In the first round the countries are divided into 12 groups of 4. From each group the countries that end up at #1 and #2 proceed to the next round. In the 2nd round the 24 remaining countries will be divided into 8 groups of 3. The managers pick a new movie. The winner of each group proceeds to the next round. The final 8 countries compete one-on-one in the quarter finals (with a new movie of course) and so on till the final.

I wonder if it's possible to collect all last votes. That'd be a record for the ages.

And back to the usual votes now. At least be glad you won't reach the lowest average rank in the tournament. Splash Splash Love had an average rank of 3.57 and that's impossible in a group of 3.

Why? Don't you like the picks?
It shouldn't feel like a commitment to watch these movies, so if you don't feel like participating it's better you don't. It's supposed to be fun anyway, not work.

There are 3 picks that I would have watched on my own. The rest seem fine. Some picks look mediocre but that's to be expected in lists as well. Just feels like a chore doing this at this point. Wanna return to my more goal-oriented film goals like finishing lists, going through my backlog, or seeing stuff I wanna see.

Sounds familiar, to be honest. Once again: please let's settle for less participating countries, if we ever do another World Cup.

Oh, but this isn't specifically about Lebanon or even this round. It's simply about the amount of films I have to watch that I didn't pick myself. I think WC films are about 40% of what I watch during a WC, because I often only watch 2-3 films a week these days. It can't be a big surprise that I find this too much.

Some people want to keep their perfect attendance intact. I'm all for fewer participating countries in the world cup as well.

Also, if you do skip movies that don't seem interesting you might not be able to vote in any round.

Gershwin lost his perfect record already. Though I wouldn't mind lesser number, if I'd see as many different countries as possible (Thailand could sit out for a while for example).

1. Körhinta - 7,8
2. Sous les bombes - 7,8
3. Das Kaninchen bin ich - 7,5

all very close for me this round!

About shorter WorldCups. There have been arguments before for shorter competitions, maybe dedicated to one continent or a genre (I'd like those). But I dont get/like the argument "I am watching fewer movies these days, so the World Cup should have fewer movies". Because 1. we had a democratic poll about how many movies we would like 2. I am not watching fewer movies and 3. in fact I have always found the pace a bit too slow. Also, 4, a lot of people on ICM appear to watch more rather than fewer movies on average. The best solutions for the percieved problem is, like others suggested, don't feel the need to have a perfect record if the pace stops your enjoyment of the "competition" or even watching the movies. I'm sure this reply will be liked about as much as I don't like the argument, but as this discussion keeps popping up now and then, I felt a little bit entitled to push back against it.

I'd prefer Eurosong-ish contest for music, but rather involving all kinds of genres. Wanna find out about new bands and new sounds. :circle:

Just to be clear: I'm not complaining about the pace here. I'm complaining about the total amount of films. And my argument isn't "I now use to watch fewer films, so there should be less films in the WC". It is "a lot of people don't have the time to watch more than three films a week, so for those people the WC lasts way too long, because for over a year it dictates about half the films they watch".

Then it's still fine if you don't like the argument, but you might also have noted that the one who initially brought this up is Art, who happens to watch about as many films as you, maybe even more. So it's not only about those petty bourgeois iCM members who by their own choice started a family and now have to suffer through a lack of time. :P

On the plus side, I was happily surprised by your pick for Spain because it was so light-hearted, light-footed. One of the main reasons I get tired of the WC is how many heavy-handed films there are, all trying to be about Very Important Issues and treating every issue way too seriously. That won't be solved by less countries, I instantly have to admit.

Amount of films per time period is about pace and this is the specific argument that got me. Not now specifically, like i said the discussion pops up many times. If people don't like the choice of movies... then there really is no counter argument or solution besides finding other ways to select the movies that you want or need to watch. Glad you noticed that i try my best to mix things up ;)
