Year-by-Year Polls: 1991

#1

Post by OldAle1 » September 10th, 2018, 5:50 pm

Hi there..

This month's poll is for 1991. Previous results in this series:

1940 results
1981 results
2005 results
1927 results
1968 results
1939 results
1976 results
1997 results
1958 results
2017 results
1948 results
1983 results
1969 results
1925 results

Rules:

- Reply here with a list of titles you've seen from 1991. You can vote for a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 20 films.

- Feature films, documentaries, short films, TV movies and TV mini-series are all eligible, but not continuing TV series or individual TV episodes.

- We use IMDb dates for consistency, so a title should be listed on IMDb as 1991.

- Your ballot can be either ranked or unranked. If it's ranked - it's easiest if you number the list; if it's unranked - please state that clearly.

- You may update your ballot at any time before the poll closes.

The scoring:

You may list choices in order of preference, in which case your top film will receive a number of points equal to the number of films in your list up to 20, with each next-ranked film receiving one fewer point; or in no order, in which case each film will receive the same number of points. So, for example, if you only vote for 5 ranked films, your top film will receive 5 points and your 5th-place film will receive 1 point. If you vote for 20 unranked films, each film will receive 10.5 points; if you vote for 5 unranked films, each film will receive 3 points, etc.

Some resources:

1991 films you've rated on IMDb

1991 films sorted by most votes on IMDb

1991 films you've checked on ICM

1991 films you *haven't* checked on ICM

I plan to run this through the last day of the month, September 30th.

After 1991 we're going back to the Atomic Age for 1957.

Are these all the year-by-year-polls that have been done on this forum since the IMDb-boards closed down? In that case I'll start adding these lists to iCM.

Top 50 for all?

If forced to choose, I think I would have to call this my favourite year for film - simply because the top 6 here would all comfortably make my all-time top 100, maybe even top 50. Number 6 would be number 1 in most other years, and that's something.

1. The Lovers on the Bridge
2. Europa
3. Thelma and Louise
4. Raise the Red Lantern
5. Barton Fink
6. Life on a String
7. The Double Life of Veronique (really want to rewatch this)
8. Jacquot de Nantes
9. Naked Lunch
10. Beauty and the Beast

11. A Brighter Summer Day
12. Daughters of the Dust
13. Centre Stage
14. Hearts of Darkness
15. 35 Up
16. The Silence of the Lambs
17. Night on Earth
18. My Own Private Idaho
19. JFK
20. Boyz n the Hood

..But yeah I need to bolster the lower end.

Is there a rule about which titles are listed? Minimum amount of voters? Minimum amount of points? I'd like to put something like that in the description, especially if the number of movies in each list will be different.

The year I was born, but for some reason I've seen far fewer films from 1991 than any other year since I was born (except last couple years). Maybe a good year for births but not film :whistling:

1. Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)
2. Naked Lunch (1991)
3. Popcorn (1991)
4. Proof (1991)
5. The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
6. Dogfight (1991)
7. There's Nothing Out There (1991)
8. Drop Dead Fred (1991)
9. Cape Fear (1991)
10. Thelma & Louise (1991)

Well I'm down as having seen 38 movies from 1991, 19 of which have been in the last (just over) 2 years since I have started rating everything I watch. Here's my top 20 thanks to my Flickchart and my IMDb list for the year. Not fully happy with it, my Flickchart seems so out of order in terms of this year. My bottom 5 is probably interchangeable and if I had rewatched them recently they may have been higher but my memory is a little shady.

1. The Silence of the Lambs
2. Child's Play 3
3. Backdraft
4. Terminator 2: Judgment Day
5. The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear
6. Point Break
7. Double Impact
8. Ashakara
9. The Addams Family
10. Highlander II: The Quickening
11. My Girl
12. Return to the Blue Lagoon
13. Cape Fear
14. Beauty and the Beast
15. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
16. Drop Dead Fred
17. Doc Hollywood
18. The Man in the Moon
19. Hot Shots!
20. Hook

I think the general guiding principle is that every film that gets three votes and at least thirty points makes the list for any given year. I think that's it.
That's all, folks!

That would be great, thanks.

I think include all titles that were listed, even if it's a random number.
Is there a rule about which titles are listed? Minimum amount of voters? Minimum amount of points? I'd like to put something like that in the description, especially if the number of movies in each list will be different.
I think the general guiding principle is that every film that gets three votes and at least thirty points makes the list for any given year. I think that's it.
This doesn't seem right. I've down two so far and just started on the third one. 1940 was 2 votes and 20 points, 1981 was 3 votes and 20 points, 2005 was 3 votes and 35 points. Seems pretty random to me.

We don't have an official rule as to the minimum votes or points that get reported in the results; in fact, I don't think we've ever discussed it among ourselves. It's left to the discretion of the person conducting the poll.

World of Glory is worth a watch, though not a 1991 film? Would have been on my list otherwise.

I'd like to give a shout-out to City of Hope, not entirely successful but a really nice, sprawling, proto-The Wire examination of an American city.
