Shorts was dropped from being annual because a majority voted against it, when setting the 2017 schedule But we could do it again. Especially with all the new users that could be interesting again.
As one of those "new"-ish users from the IMDB exodus of early 2017...YES, I'd absolutely support doing a Favorite Shorts poll again! Please consider bringing this back.

In October we'll do Germany and Horror. Let's do Germany in the first half (deadline around the 15th), because the German challenge is running now. And let's put the deadline for horror at the 31st of October, because the Horror challenge runs in October.

Any volunteers?

Mighty did that one last time. But she probably not interested in doing it again. Plus she also doing horror probably also that month. So I can do German, if no one else wants to. I can set up the nomination thread next week.

I took over Horror from her before, so I might do it again, if she doesn't want to.
Thanks for doing Germany.

When? I think you should set the deadline around 15-20 October, because the horror deadline is at the end of October. So it's time to start a thread now.......... and let the discussions begin whether or not movies are German. tehe

I was going to say - I definitely think it should be Spain & Portugal. The latter will never get a poll of its own, and the two countries have enough cultural and historical ties to justify placing them together.

Seems like most of the time it's just you or me (except for 500<400, favmovies and non-movie-polls), so if I don't do it, I guess you will. So if you can start Spain+Portugal (that has my vote as well) after you rounded up Germany, then I will start the December poll after wrapping up the horror poll.

As I said somewhere else, I can host the documentary-poll in January (unless someone else really wants to...). Before starting the nomination-thread, maybe we should define a few rules about this genre.
What about mockumentaries? I'd say no.
What about partial documentaries with acted parts as well? I'd say yes, but it's a slippery slope.
What about stage-performances? Or what about stage-performances with behind-the-scenes material intertwined?

Some other boundary cases we need to discuss?

There are several fly-on-the-wall documentaries that just document events. So in that regard they're not so different.

But the main focus about the stand-up are comedy, not the documentation, so personally Iw ouldn't vote for any of them.

You mean re-enactments of real events? No, not allowed. If we accept those, we might as well accept all movies based on a true story.

You might not, I won't as well, but as we saw in the musical poll, some people try to broaden the definition. I want to make a set of rules to avoid this.

Let's try to make a set of rules.
"A documentary film is a nonfictional motion picture intended to document some aspect of reality, primarily for the purposes of instruction, education, or maintaining a historical record." (Oxford dictionary, taken from Wikipedia)
We add these rules:
- Normal rules about shorts, episodes and mini-series apply.
- No mockumentaries. Doesn't fit the definition above anyway, but let's be extra clear about this.
- No full re-enactments. If re-enactments are a part of a documentary, which fits the definition above, it's allowed.
- No full stage performances. This excludes stand-up comedy and concert films for example. Documentaries about musicians that partly include stage performances are allowed.

In cases these rules are not conclusive, I urge people to ask themselves: "If I want to recommend a documentary to someone, would I recommend this?" So don't try to bend the rules too much. Try to leave out boundary cases that don't primarily feel like a documentary, but more like something else.

Also, don't completely trust on IMDb-tags. There are mockumentaries and re-enactments that have the documentary-tag. So go through your list to see if everything fits the rules.
Would this be sufficient enough as guideline in the OP?

Why so strict? Why should our poll be more «pure» than the Sight & Sound poll and the BFI book? I loved the «if you think it fits and if enough voters do...» rule.

Looks good J.

Perhaps we can make exceptions for those films listed on Official documentary lists (Harvard, Sight and Sound, and BFI), and have those also eligible?
Also, it's not clear on where docufiction/docudramas fit. I just saw On the Bowery, which won best doc at the Oscars, but is a mix of doc and drama. It's clearly intended to be viewed as a piece of non-fiction, but it's just as clearly partially acted (with non-actors who act out a lot of what they would do anyway).

Because of all the complaints during the musical results, which I thought were justified. I really didn't like to see a stand-up show with songs ending up on a musical list, just because two people were bending the boundaries.

But don't read this as a decision. If I'm hosting it doesn't mean I am the boss of the poll or something like that. I just do the technical work, because I like doing it. I even hosted polls on this forum, that didn't interest me and even didn't submit a list. In the end it's a forum-poll, not my poll.

I just want to gather opinions here. If enough people feel we should stick to the "if enough people think..." rule, then I will stick to it.

So yeah - clarifications about docs?

- Docuseries are cool (e.g., The Staircase), right?
- Are individual episodes of non-continuing series allowed? Specifically, I'm thinking of "The Dirty Money" series, which is (currently) 6 episodes loosely related as financial crimes, but where each episode is covering a different story, with a different director, etc. An even more extreme is example is ESPN's 30 for 30 series, where some are classified as movies, and some as part of a series? Best analog I can think is Black Mirror episodes.
- We're in agreement that films on official lists are cool, right? I'm thinking about Peter Watkins' The War Game, which won the Oscar for Best Doc Feature, but is entirely fiction and caused the Academy to change the rules about documentary eligibility...

I guess you're making clear with this that rules won't work. According to my rules above we should exclude The War Game, but who are we to do that if it even won the Oscar for best doc feature. We can solve this by allowing stuff from official lists although they don't fit our rules. But then again, if we allow the stuff from those lists, why not allow others as well if we feel they are good enough? So maybe I'm being to strict about re-enactments.

I do want to exclude stage shows though.

I think with the very broad definition IMDb uses, it’s good to set rules to exclude stage shows, like concert and stand up comedies.

I agree with excluding stage shows, mockumentaries, and pseudo-documentaries (including Peter Watkins' films...The War Game won Best Doc at the Oscars, for some reason, so it has continued to be placed on documentary lists but...we all know it's not a real documentary)
