When will the new lists be adopted? I'd prefer to wait until after they show up on icm to open to poll so that people will know from the start which films will be excluded. Unless it's going to take awhile, and then we can have those films that are unofficial now but would become official after the update eligible (including those involved in the noir fiasco :p ).
I hope early January, but you never know. Last time some technical stuff took weeks before they were completed.
Since the lists have finally been confirmed, I'll start the nomination thread when I get home. I'll set the deadline as Jan 31, which gives people three weeks to compile the lists, and hopefully by then the new official lists will be on the site and the data updated so that calculating the results and excluding films should be simple.

I'll start it today then.

I guess I'll be including the whole of Oceania just like in the current challenge. I'll use this list:

I was just wondering the other day: did we ever have an iCM's favourite black & white films poll? That might be interesting.

Yours it is then. If you start it within the first few days of April, we can still have a deadline and start of countdown in April.

This is my opinion, but I think that the following would be the appropriate countries to include in a Southeast Asia poll:

Brunei
Cambodia
Indonesia
Laos
Malaysia
Myanmar (Burma)
Philippines
Singapore
Thailand
Timor-Leste (East Timor)
Vietnam

I hadn’t thought about it yet. There hasn’t been a challenge about it yet, has there?

Maybe add Bangladesh and Bhutan? Although those countries belong to South-Asia officially. Problem is if we do a South-Asia poll it would be totally dominated by India. But that is of later concern. For now I would say let’s go with the Wikipedia list.

Almost June and we've got two polls scheduled:
1. Favorite movies of the 2010's
2. Composers

Who volunteers to do one of these? Who hosted 2010 last year? Lonewolf? If you don't want to, I can do it. I'm not interested in doing the composers-poll. Hopefully PA wants to do that one. He has a nice way of displaying people-polls-results.

Deadline for 2010's around the 15th and composers around 25th?

I have no interest in doing composers. I don't care for music in films and probably couldn't name 5 memorable scores and the only composers I know are the ones that have huge name recognition (John Williams, Hans Zimmer, Morricone, ???)
I am somewhat curious to see what comes out of the poll, and I'd be glad to help someone out with compiling the results and give them some ideas for the presentation. But the actual legwork of finding examples of each person's work and headshots and posting results isn't something I want to do in this case.

I'd willing to do the 2010s too if neither of you can. Also this reminds me I never did send you the latest screenshots. I'll see if I can do that later.

If the lists submission deadline and results unveiling for composers is all scheduled for after 18/06 (as Joachim proposed), then I can do them. And yeah, I would appreciate some ideas for a creative and interesting presentation of the results; with a people-poll that seems less straight-forward than simply a choice of an impactful screenshot. Adding a musical dimension would be interesting (youtube links, mp3 cuts, ...).

I've started the Film Composers nominations thread. Can anyone (PeacefulAnarchy?) link me the people-list-counter program (which apparently does group rankings too), please? I can't find it.

There is no people list counter that does group rankings. I do things semi-manually in a spreadsheet. I can do the results for you when the time comes as long as you've got a list of the urls and the associated usernames.

I see; that makes a lot of sense. Since you conducted all the people-based polls and included group-based ranking, and I copied the set-up, I was wondering. In this case, given that you've done this before, I would indeed very much appreciate if you could calculate the results. As suggested above I've put the deadline at the 25th, so I'll send you the lists and usernames then. My presentation of the results will ultimately be very manual and different to others (I'm considering some original stuff), so I'd only need the order, amount of points, and associated names. Thanks for the help.

Sure, I'll probably throw in some basic formatting as well for you, but you can do as you like with the presentation.
If you have a format idea for the presentation you can automate a lot of it as I do by relating things to different fields in the spreadsheet. Obviously editing images or soundclips is its own set of work and I don't have an automated way of doing that.

Alright, thanks. It might be useful for me even if I change the presentation and add many non-automated components.

It is a bit hard to search the forum if the following suggestion/discussion has already been done, but

How about a female director poll. It is hard to find a good list on the subject and we already have a yearly challenge for it... Seems like good reasons to give this some priority?

I've been thinking that it would be cool to have a Genre Cup. So, a cup tournament similar to the current World Cup, but managers would pick a specific genre (from for instance the list used in this challenge viewtopic.php?t=1123&1/ ) instead of nations. It would be a nice way to highlight genre-film since there is no good way to currently do it on the forum. Picking a genre film in the World Cup seems like a death sentence for the manager, since quite a few participants aren't interested in genre cinema and the people that are might not all participate.

It would start as soon as the World Cup finishes and we could alternate the two forms in the long run.

So, would there be an interest in this and space in the schedule?

I like the idea, but don't you think some genres have a great disadvantage to others, if only because of the availability of films?
I'm not sure I would be a manager, but I think I would participate.

As an alternative, I know someone once suggested a World Cup where every round a different genre is presented. But I guess that's a completely different idea.

This is my reaction to that idea also. competing genre's agains each other seems some how a bit off, but I understand the need to promote certain genre's. You could still divide pools up per country or per region but you could also go for, let's say, decades. So you have (a) manager(s) for a decade and they'd select movies for certain chosen genre's (the cup would be as many rounds as there are genres chosen). Maybe some other divide could be thought of but I would have a hard time ranking a horror vs a romantic comedy vs documentary and so on because the rating-value I attach to them would be biased in different ways and amounts. for me for instance a horror movie doesn't have to be scary, but a comedy must be funny… weird I know, probably incorrect if you want to go purist, but that's how these things go :)

Call me ignorant, but I still don't understand what "genre-cinema" means. Comedy is a genre, sci-fi is a genre, action is a genre, musical is a genre, etc... Doesn't almost every movie have a genre?

most "genre festivals" seem to narrow the definition to horror, scifi, fantasy, martial-arts...(sometimes also western, war, gangster and spionnage)… and any of the previous genre's mentioned combined with elements of comedy, romance or documentary which then become more 'mode' than 'genre'.

Genre cinema usually means the films that are made with a specific target audience in mind and hit many of the tropes associated with the genre or play with them. General critical acclaim is not always the main concern. But in principle yes, every movie has a genre, although as beavis mentions, it often implies genres that have a harder time finding critical acclaim and therefor have their own festivals/awards.

What admissable genres are would be up to the interested managers, but I would prefer it to be more specific than comedy , action, horror, sci-fi.

This is another difficulty with this idea. It can become very vague at times what fits the genre definition. real fans of a genre might not appreciate art-house movies that also fit the description for instance. Narrowing down the genres might help, but that of course limits choices in more ways, making a pool/cup game system more difficult to execute.

That's why I'd say all matches should have the same genre or subgenre. Then it's up to the managers to decide how far they dare to diverge from genre conventions.
