have seen maybe only 2 or 3 movies in the meantime that come close to cracking this top 50, but nothing that I must definitely include...
Longer list than Top 50 then? ;)

I have seen 1000+ Japanese films, so I could make a longer list... but 50 feels right for a list of favorites from this country, otherwise it would just be filled with "and these are also pretty good actually" movies, not "must sees that I could include in my alltime top1000".

Just received the PM. I was going to let this one go, but making a list of my favorites wasn't too much trouble. In fact, I just needed to update my previous list.

I think Onderhond's top 100 having a lot of Japanese cinema does say a lot about Japanese fims. If you follow the links in his signature he has written a lot about why this is. He is one of the few film fans I know who has been at pains to detail how his taste works, and has a wonderful and helpful website which details these points and a lot more. His is not a nationalistic / race bias, but a taste built on a wonderful sympathy. How amazing would it be if all the posters here did something similar. I have done a bit of work on this using IMDB, but Onderhond has gone way further.

Lol yup, that'd be me :ermm: The laptop I was using before, which had all my passwords and whatnot automatically saved, died on me, and the recovery options that were available to me without being able to log in just didn't work out. So I just made another, hopefully temporary, account, mostly for the purpose of being able to keep participating in polls and lists.

Just want to double check. Does any films with Japan listed as one of the countries qualified? I mean, Malcolm X & The Theory of Everything have Japan listed, but I find it hard to consider either as Japanese cinema.

Anyway, here is my ranked list of 40 I consider Japanese movies:

Well ... if anyone ever vote for Malcom-X i doubt it will make the final List unless it's an obvious troll.

I'll take a better look on any film that make the final list and faster on the others...
