But when did they stop making these films then? I've been watching Asian cinema for a good 20 years now and they've always done them.
It is a sub genre which has always been there, especially in Asia where family holds a special place. But it has become even more relevant worldwide as family is seen as one of the last stronghold in modern societies, while political powers are corrupt or failed. Covid crisis only emphasised it so clearly.

There is no more luck in the success of A Sun than in any success. For the most it is an experienced director that has eventually reached more mature work, building up from his tedious debuts and various experimentations.
Since you personify contradiction to general consensus on what a good film is, everything makes perfect sense. :)

This needs to be remembered and re-used as the stock answer to every question Onderhond has as to why such-and-such a film is either liked or disliked more by everybody else....

monclivie wrote: May 8th, 2021, 1:37 pm Maybe it's just your specific taste? A Sun entered more festivals, winning two of them, then netflix release*, Asian Film Awards nominations, and in general it's clearly more liked than Blowfish that won nothing and has poor imdb score, which for example doesn't urge me to put it anywhere on top of my long watchlist, while A Sun's score and anything around this movie looks promising. Your promotion and review put Blowfish on my radar though.
I'm just wondering where that point of critical mass lies. And how many people are involved in getting a film there.
monclivie wrote: May 8th, 2021, 1:37 pm *Come on, what i should say? Even Martin Scorsese (not to mention how many on this forum) is promoting Polish films, but the most popular Polish movie in the world right now is a softcore porn fantasy, thanks to Netflix :folded:
https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?titl ... nguages=pl
As you can see there, the film has an average of 3.2
Sure, some films get exposure on Netflix (and that's hardly assured), but very few are appreciated.

I mean, Paris est à nous is on Netflix too, it has 1.4K votes and a 4.6 average, even though it is described as Malick-like.

Well, I lost a ton of checks. Goddamn. I couldn't possibly care less about the DTC official list, but losing any official check feels like having a tooth pulled. This is gonna hurt my rank.

I wonder if the reverse is true. When you gain official checks, does it reduce tooth pain? Are official checks the new anesthesia?

Like with any other addiction, the relief from getting to consume the drug is a complete delusion and you will never really be better off than you were before all of that shit.

That said - I have less personal favorites in joachim's list of ex-officials than in the new addictions. .. um, additions.

Looks like I lost 150 checks and my bronze award in the update.

Oh, well! I guess that means more new stuff to watch.

That's an error, yes. It should have been excluded from the list. It was voted in last year, so I guess Ángel just forgot to remove it from the list after it made the 21C one this year.

I guess that means the runner up https://www.icheckmovies.com/movies/le+grand+amour/ should be added to the list.

have you watched his stuff in the cinema?

Outside the cinema it's a pale imitation.

He's one of very few directors who can make image stand on their own without sound. He can distil real life and extract the spiritual.

I watched Winter at the London Film Festival back in the late noughties and never looked back. He turned the godamned cinema into a temple.

Back in the day not enough people had seen the movies to get in projects like these. There are bootlegs online of some of them in the last couple of years which have pumped up the numbers. It's amazing that people see them in such withered form and theyre still loving them. They're films where digital compression and inappropriate viewing conditions really tear apart the experience.

Good catch, guys! Yes, then "Le grand amour" and "The Invisible Man" make the list.

Could you do the same filtering to the runners-up?

I've been championing a film like Blowfish [Hetun] for the past 10 years now, even so it has a paltry 126 votes on IMDb.
This looks interesting, I'll definitely check it out if I can track down a copy, thanks

On a separate note, will there be an icm or imdb list for the holdovers and revotes in consideration for next year's DtC?

Whoa, I actually went up 74 places to #212. And I'll go up again once J makes the minor changes, since I've seen The Invisible Man. If one of the two people just ahead of me also go up, I'll be Rank #211 with 211 checks - can't think of any other time where my rank and my checks were equal on a list, though they've been close.

I went from 45 to 42 despite losing almost 150 checks - I guess it helped me to spend so much of the last 2 months watching DTC stuff. And I'm continuing as there happen to be a bunch of 1933 films on the list and I'm trying to see a few more before posting my list for that poll. I'll be happy to hit 50% as I have the last few years, but I think I may actually try to hit up all the top 25 or so this time - finally get around to The Human Condition for one thing.

My guess is that since the 1001-2000 films were removed from the list, a lot of casual DTC users dropped ranks, while those of us who work specifically on the DTC list rose in rank, since the films that remained tend to be seen by fewer people than the TSPDT films that left the list.

That's why it's not something that I'm too likely to ever actively work towards. If I go for a medal on DTC, I ran out of everything else.

I'd be more concerned by a canon that doesn't change.. it should be reflective of the time it's made/updated, not when it was first put together. But this year they changed the formula and stuff so it probably had a bigger shake-up than usual.

I'm pretty sure that by definition a canon doesn't change. It may grow, but I doubt it would diminish. Would the Shakespeare canon change so dramatically? Or the Star Trek canon?
I also think "reflective of the time it's made" is the same thing as "when it was first put together."

As I said, I respect the process, I just have a semantic argument with the list.

Canon can absolutely change; the definition of the word does not preclude it.

b: the authentic works of a writer
the Chaucer canon
c: a sanctioned or accepted group or body of related works

5[Late Greek kanōn, from Greek, model] : a contrapuntal musical composition in which each successively entering voice presents the initial theme usually transformed in a strictly consistent way
Even your mentioned Star Trek canon has been revised since the very beginning, by the creator himself. And I remember the uproar of Disney changing the accepted Star Wars canon of books when it made the sequel trilogy of films. The "Shakespeare canon" is really just a list of plays that he's authored, and it's subject to some debate as to whether or not he was the (sole) author of a number of plays in his canon.

Personally I'm not too bothered by the turnover in the list, especially since a significant part of it is fueled by organic turnover in voters/forum participants. I greatly enjoy the annual exercise of nominating/watching/voting for the updated list, and if nothing else everyone's nominees collectively provide a new list of suggestions to watch, or a nudge to watch films that were already on my radar. In each of the three years I've participated so far I've found new favourites, regardless of whether they were voted onto the list itself.

My bigger reservation with the final product has always been accessibility. A lot of these titles are clearly very obscure (roughly 1/3 of the list is under 100 checks). I'm currently sitting at 165/1000 on the revised list, and while this on its own isn't a good measurement of accessibility - which in any case varies from country to country based on the randomness of licensing on Netflix/MUBI/Prime etc. as well as other factors - I'm only actively aware of a few dozen more films that I could watch with relative ease, most of which are on Criterion Channel or Kanopy. Beyond this, there are almost certainly others that can be found without too much difficulty, primarily on Kanopy, Prime and YouTube, but I'd be pleasantly shocked if - even with this list as my top priority - I could get to anywhere near half during the next year.

Isn't a lot of the high turnover due to, this time, the DTC list actually being an "Add 1000 to the other 2000" list?

If your sole reply is to quote a single word of the definition pertaining to religious functions regarding the origin of the word, and not the the parts pertaining to the relevant use of the word in the context of the current discussion, then I must sadly admit I have yet again been duped by another classic Walter troll. I don't know why I still think that you're interested in occasionally having a serious discussion. I give up. You win.

Yes, and I think anyone who's been following along with the process this year understands that.

WalterNeff wrote: May 10th, 2021, 1:22 am While I have respect for the time and effort that goes into this list, my opinion is if it changes by 25% or so, how canonical is it really?
Is it really trying to be very canonical? I like this list and enjoy anything related to it (except the rejection of my noms :P), but it's more like a couple dozen people trying to promote their favorites with more or less success, similarly to 500<400. It's a fun game and a source of some great recommendations, but you can't really get 8-10 people to watch an obscure movie and honestly call it a canon, only because most of them rated it 4/6 or more, I guess.
