If you mean by "impact" films that actually changed cases or laws, sure - The Thin Blue comes to mind first, it essentially re-argued a case and got a man out of prison.

Thin Blue Line was indeed the first one and deservedly got its spot in our top 1000 just for the sheer impact on a man's life. This one did the same thing as Thin Blue Line but even better in my opinion.

Lakigigar wrote: April 8th, 2021, 11:41 am Sometimes i think the 1001-2000 countdown is more interesting.

Still lots of favourites
Still lots of undiscovered gems
More movies from 2010's.

The top 250 and especially top 100 is less interesting.

Also don't know why MCU gets so much hate, if we still have Raiders of the Lost Ark in the top 150 and movies like Toy Story 2 in top 250. There are even lots of Disney's in the list (Zootopia almost making top 1000, while Snow White is lower than Zootopia surprised me. But Zootopia is probably more accessible yes, and Snow White is obviously showing it's age. YET this forum is just known to not have an issue with age, so it surprises me).

Sure, i don't think it'd fit well in our top 1000 but it's not like Raiders of the Lost Ark is like better than Iron Man. I enjoy both, but they're not top list material, and i'm unsure why ICM thinks Raiders of the Lost Ark should be considered a classic that almost hits the top 100 while the other one (Iron Man) even didn't crack top 2500. Not really sure, esp. for the artificial age label, and it being more renowned among critics circles as well as that famous director name on the movie's label, but I agree with Onderhond... For all the hate MCU gets, there are lots of similar movies that end up pretty high in the list, so I don't think that hate directed towards MCU is kinda justified. Just my two cents...
Iron Man as the oldest MCU-film (i guess) is a good example: tell me one iconic scene of this film. I'm not the biggest Indiana Jones-fan and i think Iron Man is one of the better MCU-films, but it's over ten years old and is there anything that stand out?

Raiders of the Lost Ark you know scenes, even if you not know the whole film itself because it was referenced in so many other films and tv-series. The begin in the jungle f.e. i saw in an episode of the simpsons long before i even known the film cause Indiana Jones find it's way into pop culture.

To get pop cultural relevant is of cause not a sure proof to be a good film. But in case of "popcorn/ mainstream cinema" it's maybe a good reference point.

It's just fashionable to hate on the MCU because it's popular. In about twenty years, there'll be nostalgia for it. It's an endless cycle.

Amazing work, Tim!

I also had no part in the HHH massacre - I've seen all of his features from 1993 onwards, and included at least several of his films. But I still haven't seen A City of Sadness, or most of his '80s output. Overall it would be nice if more of his films were widely available in better quality. He still wouldn't be for everyone, but he'd probably have quite a few more fans here. If Tarr and Diaz can get on the list then surely Hou can as well.

For those considering dipping their toes in who haven't done so yet, here's a scene from The Assassin, arguably one of the 5 or so most aesthetically beautiful color films ever made:
Spoiler
And Tim, no the reason Moulin Rouge! isn't ranked higher isn't because you forgot it. It's because it's actual torture and my personal least favorite film of all time for over 10 years now. Clearly everyone agreed to leave it off their lists for my sanity's sake. :P The experience of watching it was like going through that freaky tunnel in Willy Wonka...but for hours.

(Anyway, I joke around, but it was a seriously distressing experience for me)

A lie ain't a 'side of the story.' It's just a lie.

Diaz isn't on the list though :(

As mentioned before I think part of it is that there is no one (or two) standout for Hou, like many other directors AND when you combine this with the relative unavailability of his films in quality editions and his general "difficult" and "slow" reputation... Tarr on the other hand has two films that really stand out in terms of critical rep and exposure, and Satantango just came out in a new BD which helps his overall exposure probably. Last time I looked only two of Diaz' films were available on DVD or BD at all, only erratic streaming availability, and with most of his films being very long, and Filipino cinema in general still underseen (there are no Filipino films on the list at all), it's not surprising that he fails to place. On the upside Raoul Ruiz is finally starting to get his due. These things take time - I remember when I was first on the IMDb forums hardly anybody was talking about Rivette or Robbe-Grillet, and very few films from either were widely available. Things have changed dramatically for them since 2005 so we can only hope similar forces are at work for some of our other still-below-the-radar faves.

Well it's tough to argue against "in about twent years..." because nobody can proof. In 30 years everybody will wear blue gumboot because it's fashion trend... proof me the opposite.
And to say it's fashionable to "hate" (btw for me it's a big difference not to favour a film or to hate it) them, while nearly every of the MCU-films has a very good ranking from half a million and more peoole on the most famous film database... i think it's more common to like them.

The sad truth is that HHH's death would do the appreciation of his work a lot of good.

As for not 1 particular film jumping out, in more Asian-minded communities I frequent I see references to Millennium Mambo (and certainly the intro) pop up at least once every couple of days. It's also one of the first Asian DVDs I bought and the one that seemed to have traveled the world pretty well when it was released. But yeah, different audience.

Yeah, that's probably right. Rivette, ARG and Ruiz all gained in popularity and saw more of their films made available after they died. Varda too though she was getting more renown slowly and cumulatively over the past several years before her death. I'm rather surprised actually that there has only been one Criterion Hou release, of one film - certainly one of his most beautiful films but also not I think one of his most popular or a film that's a good intro to him - when I saw Flowers of Shanghai at the Chicago Film Fest in 1998, it had the highest number of walkouts I've ever seen at a festival film. I would think a set of his loose trilogy of City of Sadness/Puppetmaster/Good Men, Good Women would be something that would sell well by Criterion standards, but of course I don't know anything about how they acquire films, what restoration work those films might need, etc. Seems like an obvious and typical Criterion pick though. Or Arrow/MOC/etc.

And Millenium Mambo seems like probably his most accessible film (Flight of the Red Balloon and Cafe Lumiere being runners-up), so not surprised that might be more popular in some communities.
