Just going by the blurb on Amazon we have:

Mad Max: Fury Road
The Big Short
Star Wars: The Force Awakens
The Revenant
Spotlight
Straight Outta Compton.

Hmm... It's not listed on the US site yet, but, it's available for preorder through the UK site. Well, I've seen at least 6 of the new entries. I'll assume there will be anywhere from 4-6 more (one I'm almost for sure will be Ex-Machina.)

The most surprising one on that list, to me, is Straight Outta Compton.

Any idea when the new list is coming out. I remember hearing the updates about this time last year and want to know when I should try and finish Leviathan.

Last year there were some solid hints because the cover had all (most?) of the new movies on it.

This one has The Revenant on the cover, so I suppose we know at least one new entry, although no idea what is being dropped.

I bet The Theory of Everything will be dropped.

I'd be very surprised if Guardians of the Galaxy isn't dropped. It was rather surprising that it even made the list in the first place. Other than that, who knows? Is Under the Skin safe?

I wonder how long we'll have to wait to see what the updates are. Is anyone here purchasing the book? The guy who ran the 1001 wiki passed away earlier this year, so, we can't go off his information, either.

If this is it, I just need to see Tangerine.

Is the book not planned for release in the US? I see the new one listed on European and Asian amazon sites but not the US version.

Probably waiting till after our election is over. Book publishing might not be worthwhile if one of those nutters is elected...

Isn't it still pre-order on Amazon?

Also, it's says completely revised on the front (according to Amazon) so this could be an overhaul year.

Which Tangerine is it? Really damn confusing; just like the 2 recent Leviathans. I'm guessing the 2015 one and not the 2013 one... which would make that and The Look of Silence the only ones I'll need to see to keep my platinum.

2015 Tangerine I'm pretty sure.

I'm short a couple more, but pretty close as well.

The US tends to only get an edition every other year. It's a UK-based book, so the UK gets a copy every year.

It seems the list is circulating the internet, but I'm not sure if it's official enough to change the list.

Apparently:
InShow
The Look of Silence (2014)
Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)
The Revenant (2015)
Son of Saul (2015)
Bridge of Spies (2015)
The Big Short (2015)
Spotlight (2015)
Tangerine (2015)
Straight Outta Compton (2015)
Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
OutShow
Senna (2010)
Cave of Forgotten Dreams (2010)
Drive (2011)
Amour (2012)
Django Unchained (2012)
The Act of Killing (2012)
The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)
Citizen Four (2014)
Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
The Theory of Everything (2014)
I don't have the book (and probably won't buy it), but, if anyone does, can they confirm this?

I did see a copy, tallies with what I remember seeing in terms of new ones (except I thought I saw The Martian, but maybe I imagined that with most of the other best picture nominees being there!)

No idea about the outs though

I saw it in the first few comments there. I don't know how reliable the source they linked in the comments there is, however. That's why I questioned it instead of saying for sure.

The person who basically ran that site, who I consider a reliable source, passed away earlier this year, so, again, I'm not 100%. It's good enough for me to update my personal spreadsheet, though, tentative as it may be. I was more or less trying to see if anyone here can confirm their research.

There's also a Facebook-page of the 1001Movies-App. Is that app from the official source? In that case, the changes are from a reliable source and the list can be updated.

I'll dive into it later today.

It looks like the official site (1001beforeyoudie.com) has lapsed. That's too bad.

I know the writer of the 1001 app used to post on the 1001 wiki site, but I don't know if the Facebook page is official.

Some research makes it seem like yes, while the app is independently made it has an official license from the publishers of the book.

I saw the new book in the bookshop today, and I can confirm those changes are correct.

Photos of the film index

A disappointing set of changes, just doing a general turnover of the last few years and including a lot of last year's more underwhelming Oscar Nominees.

That's how it is most years, if you look back. I can only remember one substantial revision, the one that added "A Throw of the Dice" to the list.

I don't mind them not adding old films, but shuffling new films for 1-3 year old films is a meaningless transparent dance because you know more than half will be gone in the next two years.

My sentiments exactly. It seems the editors are getting quite lazy. Overall, the removals are much better than the new films, too.

I understand that, but, they are just making changes, just to make changes. It's rather sloppily done as well. If there's no other worthwhile films from last year to add to the list other than Straight Outta Compton or Bridge of Spies, both of which are going to be gone next year, why must they make a new copy each year? Why not make it biannually?

There's no reason for me to go out and buy this book when I have last year's, and it's going to be exactly identical, with the exception of the last 20 or so pages. If they are marketing on that strategy, good luck.

I was seriously irritated that they added that crappy Star Wars movie, even moreso than Straight Outta Compton.

There are some genuinely good older movies that they could consider shuffling into that mix instead of just adding a few movies from the latest releases every time they do an update. They are also making room for some of those crappy new releases by removing better movies. Instead of 1001 Movies to See Before You Die it's more like "here's some movies we saw last year. Don't expect them to be around in the next edition because they weren't that good."

I try and look at this issue from both sides. Yes, it's absurd to arbitrarily add exactly ten new movies with each edition and then only delete recent films. However the whole point of this list is to attempt to pinpoint a rough 1,001 best movie list in the moment, and mistakes will always exist. The list covers a rough 100 years, so ten a year makes a fair guesstimate to a particular year's historical output. Going through the classics would take a major poll that most of the contributors who worked on the list simply won't do every single year.

If there are things to bitch about it's that the list editors need material to write about, that's how Compton and Star Wars got on the page. Even worse once The Big Short (how is no one complaining about this middlebrow snoozer?) got picked they realized that The Wolf of Wall Street would have an ultra similar write-up and it was dropped despite being superior in every way.

The main problem I have with it, is it seems every year they make changes, just to make changes. This year's is a perfect example. There's maybe 1 or 2 films that should absolutely be on the list. A lot of it is just chaff that they are going to remove next year (and they know it). Why not just wait a few years, instead of making a new version each year?

Honestly, I think it's a marketing ploy, to get people to buy a new copy each year. I bought last years, and it'll probably be the last one I buy for a few years, and only if they completely revise it, which they've only done once. I mean, why bother, if the only thing that's different are the last 10-15 pages?

Don't get me wrong, I understand their purposes, but, this fool isn't playing along. ;)

“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’
“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ (Matthew 25:37-40)
