Movies with less than 5 checks

Post by Fergenaprido » October 16th, 2014, 12:28 pm

Most of my obscure checks are shorts, and more of those are queer shorts. I'll list the features below, most of which are Canadian or gay.

29 with 1 check, including
Lelaki harapan dunia (Malaysia, 2014) which I saw at TIFF last month and opens here in Malaysia next month
Histoires d'hiver (Canada, 1999) which I don't remember much about and want to rewatch but I can't find it anywhere.

20 with 2 checks, including
Siblings (Canada, 2004) a black comedy with Sarah Polley in a supporting role
Sebastians verden (Norway, 2010) a queer film which you should avoid at all costs
The Best Damn Fiddler from Calabogie to Kaladar (Canada, 1969) which is about an hour and available on the NFB site.

18 with 3 checks, including
Rufus (Canada, 2012) which is a nice semi-horror that I wanted to share with everyone on KG in time for the horror challenge but I'm having trouble getting things to meet their quality standards
Regarding Billy (USA, 2005) largely forgettable made-for-tv queer movie
2by4 (USA, 1998) interesting and somewhat unconventional queer film (but then aren't they all?)

10 with 4 checks, including
The Ski Trip (USA, 2004) a rare black-focused queer film that's not bad, but I don't know about the sequel
Long-Term Relationship (USA, 2006) okay queer film about looking for and maintaining an LTR

10 with 5 checks, including
Tous les papas ne font pas pipi debout (Belgium, 1998) Good French-language made-for-tv film about a lesbian couple with a son trying to maintain their 'normalcy' in their neighbourhood
Talking to Americans (Canada, 2001) Hilarious tv special: mainly for Canadians, not sure if others would get it
The Raven (America, 2007) horrid queer slasher film; plot is two guys get it on, get killed, and repeat 3 or 4 more times
Gurikku no bouken (Japan, 1984) bad cutesy anime about a chipmunk on a journey
Eban and Charley (America, 2000) a poor attempt at portraying pedophilia (though maybe technically this one is ephebophilia) in the queer community; even mighty probably wouldn't like this one :p

87 in total.

1 check:
Canyon Ambush (1952)
Massacre River (1949)
North of the Rio Grande (1937)
Vendetta (1950)

The first three are westerns, the last one appeared on a poster in an episode of Friends.

2 checks:
Panhandle (1948) A western
Bakhita (2009) A biography of a catholic saint.

5 checks:
Jack Slade (1953) A western.

I removed tv-movies, so that makes seven. Mostly westerns.

Reaalllyy good, if you're into the Before series, Naked, Lost in Translation, that kind of thing, it's well worth a watch.

It's been quite a while since I saw it - on VHS, I guess. To tell the truth, I don't remember much about it. I watched it because Purcell is a one-of-a-kind sort of composer, and I'm interested in that period of English history (2d half of 17th century) I see Netflix claims to have it; maybe I'll try it again sometime.

I've seen two films with less than 5 checks. I was half expecting there to be none.
Newsboys: Down Under the Big Top (4 checks)
Rolie Polie Olie: The Great Defender of Fun (2 checks)

Currently watching an official check with 3 checks so far. Earlier today I watched another official check with 7 checks so far (haven't checked it yet myself...), which was very good. Still lots of underseen movies out there.

last time I counted this, I didn't have all the movies I'd seen checked. But now I do:

I have 480 checks with a maximum of 4 checks

Most of those will be features (because the only time I like to watch a short is when they are on an ICM-list that I like, and thus a popular check)
I see a lot of "weird asian"/ "mondo macabro" cult amongst them
but it is too many to give a more detailed account :)
I expected the count to be somewhat high, because I'm always on the lookout for obscure gems and cult movies

I've seen 80 films with less than five checks. Many of them are music-related.

A lot of them are shorts that I don't really remember, but a few that I liked:

King 1978 (MLK mini-series with Paul Winfield that I saw when I was a kid)

Family Band: The Cowsills Story 2011 (self-explanatory...heck, I saw this one on ordinary cable TV, so I'm surprised it doesn't have a few more checks than this)

To Norway, Home of Giants (mock travel doc with John Cleese narration)...and Cleese's "Meetings, Bloody Meetings" has three checks. And Palin/Jones' "The Box" has only two....

Love You Til Tuesday 1969 (early David Bowie promo film)

Satan Since 2003 2011 (Now this is great! A short about some modest little motorcycle gangs that takes a shocking, dark turn.)

Rotten to the Core 1965 (funny British caper comedy...and the young Charlottte Rampling has an underwear scene that will give you a heart attack)

Mellodrama 2008 (documentary about the Mellotron)

Ginger Baker in Africa (the Cream drummer on an odyssey)

I count 79 films with 1-4 checks, including one film which I rate as a favorite where I have the only check - Ebrahim Golestan's savage anti-Shah satire Asrar ganj dareheye jenni / The Ghost Valley's Treasure Mystery (1974). Several other Iranian films on this list, also some b-westerns, serials, and several shorts. Some of these are really surprising to me in their apparent obscurity, like

Cover-Up: Behind the Iran Contra Affair (1988) - a pretty well-received doc at the time, which I saw in the cinema - I believe in commercial release but I can't swear to that. Maybe it never made it to digital?

Moment to Moment (1966) - Hollywood crime-romance with Jean Seberg and Honor Blackman, filmed on the Riviera for gosh sakes, and only 4 checks? I know this one isn't on DVD, at least not R1, but still...

The Last Polka (1985) - John Candy, SCTV, what gives?

Drums of Fu Manchu (1940) - looks like serials in general don't get a lot of checks (or love?) but this is one of the better-known ones and I'm surprised it's so little-seen.
Here's to the fools who dream.

Currently I'm at 192 films with less than 5 checks. Most of those are chanbara flicks, including standouts like Moeyo-ken (1966), Chi to suna no kettô (1963) and Oedo go-nin otoko (1951).

Other notable films that are underseen around these parts include:

Nomad's Land - Sur les traces de Nicolas Bouvier (2008)
Joe Leahy's Neighbours (1989)
A Royal Scandal (1997)
Carlitos Medellin (2004)
England, My England (1995)
Fabrik der Offiziere (1989)
Kyoto, My Mother's Place (1991)

Hi Ale,thank for sharing your list of a lot of fascinating-sounding obscurities. Despite her still being famous thanks to iconic roles in The Avengers and 007,Honor Blackman's Moment To Moment (only 165 votes on IMDB) did not even come out on Vid in the UK...But,it has been put up online:

Part 1:
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x4nfelb

Part 2:

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1pvu3 ... _lifestyle

Although it has not come out on DVD (but is on YT) Cover-Up: Behind the Iran Contra Affair did get released on Video: https://www.amazon.com/Coverup-Behind-I ... 6301045661

Following Cover-Up,The Last Polka (also on YT) has only hit Video https://www.amazon.com/Shmenges-Last-Po ... 6302034655 With Drums of Fu Manchu being the only one to get a "real" release:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/DVD-Blu-ray/ ... B000087F3F

Whilst I know that not every film can get a Special Edition,I always find it sad that so many films rely on fan uploads to stop them from being lost in time.

I have about 45 movies with less than 5 checks. Of those shorts available online, I would recommend:

Night Club
Krabi
La libération de Paris
Ringo
This is the voice of world control.

You can also just click the sort by checks option twice and it reverses the sort order. This works for all the sorting filters throughout the site.

A few I really liked :
Odoshi, by Kinji Fukasaku (one of his best)
Mahiru no ankoku, by Tadashi Imai
Adieu Babylone, by Raphael Frydman
The Arti: The Adventure Begins, by Huang Wen Chang (For all fans of animation and puppet films)

Many french movies, many films I saw in festivals (so no widespread distribution), a few short film.

Going to second this one, technically not perfect, but still very imaginative and beautiful. If I'm not mistaken this was meant to be a series of films, so hopefully they'll find funding for the other ones.

I've rewatched the trailer, and it looks like Warner Brothers own the picture. I'm afraid they may decide to shelve it...

Oh, I forgot this single-check of mine: Nu guo - Nel Nome della Madre (2014) - it offers fascinating insight into the matriarchal society of the Mosuo, an ethnic group living in in the foothills of the Himalayas.

Surprise: Ta meg med! (recent norwegian musical), The Nor-way to Broadcasting (also Montreux)

4 checks: 51 titles.
Recommended: Byttinger, Kosmetikkrevolusjonen.
Surprise: Anarchy TV

Have removed episodes, BTS documentaries and compilations.

at least a few of those I mentioned last time have gotten 1 or 2 more checks
Alomst a year have passed:

1 check: 59 (60)
2 checks: 76 (59)
3 checks: 56 (47)
4 checks: 66 (51)

After the <400 challenge these had to raise. But the old ones are still there a year later. The shorts I kind of understand, but probably half of these are features.

As before I have removed TV-episodes, BTS documentaries and compilations.

edit: this was a thread about official checks, I see. So better disregard everything then. I think my lowest official is Flugten (1973) with 11 checks.

Interesting to see how this has changed in four years.

All the titles above are now over 5 checks and currently I've got only one official check that is under 5 checks:
http://www.icheckmovies.com/movies/pedjuang/ (2 checks)
And to be honest, I think I haven't seen a complete copy of it, because it didn't feel finished at all. Not sure how much I've missed. I hope to find the full movie one day and then I'll rewatch it from the start.

So if I include unofficial checks, the total is 936, but that includes episodes as well. If I filter these, I'm left with 212 titles, but that still includes a few dozens of music videos of which I'm sure several others here have seen it.

These are pre-1900 shorts which I checked with less than 5 checks. Armoreska, jvv, I know you love those old shorts. Have you seen them? If not, maybe I can share some or maybe I made a mistake somewhere.

I've seen about 60 with less than 5 checks.

A few examples:

Oddball curiosity that only just got added to IMDB. 166 watches and 75 likes on Letterboxd.

Only recently added to IMDB too I imagine, almost 100 watches on Letterboxd.

I added a link to this one a while ago, hopefully it'll get more checks.

8-bit Benning.

Short based on J.G Ballard's Crash starring Ballard himself.

Surprised that this hasn't got more checks. Akerman comedy short.

I added these to ICM, no one but me has checked them so far:

I see I misread the title of the topic, so my official check with the least amount of checks is 11. Danish movie I actuallly own on DVD.

Not eager to watch it, because I'm not really an Akerman-fan, but it is indeed surprising to see big names with so few checks, especially when the short in question is easily available:

I guess there are only a small number of hard-core fans for even major directors - people who will watch EVERYTHING. I mean, Hitchcock has a feature with only 143 checks. I really like Akerman but there's a lot I haven't seen including the short in question (maybe I'll watch it today). While I am somewhat completist by nature it's impossible to be completist about everything I like and there are always greater priorities than a short which probably won't be totally awesome.

Sure, but it's still interesting to find notable things with so few checks. I'll see which most notable things are among my <5 checks.

Technicaly an episode, but it's standalone. I haven't seen anything else from the series. This is a sort of documentary. Rowan Atkinson gives a lecture about visual comedy. He uses stuff he played himself, but also scenes from other comedians.
