Movies with less than 5 checks

#41

Post by funkybusiness » October 9th, 2014, 4:28 pm

5 films with less than 5 checks. 1 with exactly 5. I helped with the subtitles for a couple. Another is a Hollis Frampton film I added to imdb.
for those interestedShow
Matrix: First Dream (1979) 1 check
Notte, orgogliosa sorella (1971) 1 check
Páter Vojtech (1929) 3 checks
The Life of the Party (1937) 4 checks
To hroniko mias Kyriakis (1975) 4 checks
Berliner Stilleben (1926) 5 checks

19 with less than 5, 5 with exactly 5.

the one I'm most surprised about is: https://www.icheckmovies.com/movies/der+letzte+akt/

only got English subs on KG last year so it's mainly an availability thing, but it's a film I'd still expect more to have watched because: it's directed by GW Pabst, it's about Hitler & is I believe the first post-war German film to depict him & it's essentially the basis for the very well known Der Untergang/Downfall. it's also a pretty good film.

I have 62 checks with 4 checks or less. Most of them are anime, and also some Chinese films and few others.

61, many are not feature films but tv episodes or documentaries. Feature films seen include Fun at St Fanny's and The Gay Dog, neither are what you may think they are. Play for Today: Edna, the Inebriate Woman (1971) on the other hand may be, and is recommended.

1 check:
Transfiction (2007) - A documentary focusing on Brazilian transgendered people, acting out their own life experiences. Saw it on the only film course I've ever attended, think it's the only film I've imported from IMDb. At the time I was under the impression that this was a relatively well-known film, turns out I was quite wrong.

3 checks:
Chelovek s ruzhyom (1939) aka The Man with the Gun - A simple rifle man lives through the Russian revolution and becomes an apostle for the cause after meeting Lenin (who is basically Jesus). I remember this being a bit boring, although not badly done.
Shepperton Babylon - A solid TV documentary about the dirty side of British film industry of the '20s and '30s.

4 checks:
Chao qiang tai feng (2008) aka Super Typhoon - A Chinese catastrophe film with a strong propagandistic tone. I remember this being really hilarious when I saw it, although it probably had a lot to do that I went in with zero expectations and other appreciating people.
Lenin v Polshe (1966) aka Lenin in Poland - apparently I've seen a surprising amount of obscure Soviet propaganda films, considering that I'm not really an expert on Soviet/Russian cinema. I remember this being not-that-exiting.

5 checks:
The Three Fantastic Supermen (1967) - Farcical Italian superhero film. Pretty bad.
My iz Kronshtadta (1936) aka We Are from Kronstadt - Yet another Soviet propaganda film. I remember this had a really cool feel to it for the first five minutes it so, then it just became duller and duller.
They Were Not Divided (1950) - Very yawn-inducing British war film. Directed by Terence Young, more well known for the Bond films Dr. No, From Russia with Love and Thunderball.

Altogether five films under five checks, three films with exactly five.

After filtering out the TV episode, I've got 123 checks with less than 5 checks. Don't know how many features and how many shorts.

@Joachim: Just two, namely,

Gade uden ende (1963) - 1 check

and Hail (1973) - 4 checks

Anyway, looking through my <5 check films, it's obvious that lots of gems go unnoticed around these parts...

Fantastic cinematography (obviously it's fucking Kalatozov). I couldn't get into the plot at all though. Pretty much felt like a circle jerk. I love the only review for it on imdb cause all that user talks about is how the film has Shoshtakovich's music.

@Joachim: Then there's
Bundfald (1957) - 6 checks on the Danish list,
El regalo de la Pachamama (2008) - 7 checks on the Cinema Tropical list,
Vlcie diery (1948) - 7 checks + Chuquiago (1977) - 8 checks - both on the UNESCO list,
Balladen om Carl-Henning - 9 checks on the Danish list.

Also, let's not forget Sex and the Law (1968) - 9 checks - thanks for nothing, UncleAmos.

More 9 checks on official lists:

Qivitoq (1956)
Støt står den danske sømand (1948)
Prikosnoveniye (1989)
Tillbaka till Ararat (1988)
Troublemakers (1966)

Yeah, there are a few nice shots - no surprise, considering the one in charge of the camera work is Sergei Urusevsky ("The Forty-First", "Cranes are Flying", "Letter Never Sent", "I Am Cuba", "The Village Teacher" ). And yes, storywise you'd have to be an ardent believer in Communist ideology to get any joy from it - come to think of it, this should be the perfect film for cippy.

It should be 2, but there's a film missing from the Golden Horse iCM list (the 2nd part of the film I just linked). I would have a few more if the dGenerate list got adopted.

Ha!, at least one official obscure one:
Metade Fumaca on the HK list, which I've seen on German television one day and apparently liked somehow - the gap of iCM checks (5) and IMDb votes (379) is certainly astounding.

Oh, due to my checking policy (official only!), I've seen a few (unofficial) ones with zero checks - can you keep up with that? :D

More Places Forever (2008) (0 checks), documentary bore
U'bejani (1997) (0 checks), utter trash from South Africa with talking animals (rhinoceroses, ostriches and whatnot!), the kind of film you see in the night of New Year's Eve, 5 o'clock, on television and never wonder how it ended up there
The Green Hornet (1994) (0 checks), HK video material tagged with action, adventure and fantasy - oh gosh ..

1-5 checks, unofficial
Landscapes at the World's Ends (2010) (3 checks), documentary triptychon, prefer Herzog
Onna harakiri: seisan (1990) (3 checks), some obscure Harakiri torture porn probably (- does harakiri qualify as "torture"?)
Hungry Mouth (1999) (2 checks), more Japanese torture exploitation, subs not available (and not necessary)
Majestic Thunderbolt (1985) (3 checks), absurd cut-and-paste trash by the king of HK C-movies: Godfrey Ho!
Suicide Dolls (1999) (2 checks), more Japanese torture drivel, rated it 2/10, so ..
Horse-Woman-Dog (1990) (4 checks), Japanese exploitation shit I wouldn't even want to remember considering the title
Hitna pomoc (2009) (1 check), boring Serbian drama
Inguélézi (2004) (1 check), French drama, maybe even recommendable
La vera storia della monaca di Monza (1980) (5 checks) - how can a nunsploitation title by Bruno Mattei be below even 50 checks? ;)
24 h Berlin - Ein Tag im Leben (2009) (1 check) - okay, I'll be honest that I haven't watched the entire 24 hours of it, but zapped in every once in a while and actually liked the concept to some extent
Timemaster (1995) (3 checks), one of the definitely lousiest pieces of Family/Sci-Fi garbage I've ever encountered
Robosaurus (1992) (2 checks), one these rare Z movies so ridiculous you wouldn't believe to actually exist

Ah, damn, that Armenian silent film already has freaking 7 checks .. :D

And that grotesquely awful 2014 German TV movie I was about to control hadn't even an iCM entry yet, which I do not desire to change since I rated this P.O.S. with an honest 1/10. We're all off better with this.

I didn't even control German TV films now - would amount to some - because, well .. if you know what German TV productions are like, you will understand.

I have 47 with less than five checks...the features are The American Dreamer (1971), Death at Love House (1976...which scared the sh*t out of me when I was young), Degree of Murder (1967), When Women Lost Their Tails (1972), Family Band: The Cowsills Story (2011), Home Before Midnight (1979...ohmigod, this is TERRIBLE), Looking for Leonard (2002...only watched because I'm a Superchunk/Portastatic fan), Negatives (1968...now THIS is worth seeing!), Teen a Go Go: A Little Film About Rock and Roll History (2012...misleading title, because it's actually about a very narrow niche of Texas garage rock), A Good Band Is Easy to Kill (2005...documentary about the defunct band Beulah), Lovedolls Superstar (1986...doesn't quite manage to be fun-awful rather than just awful) and Brian Eno 1971-1977: The Man Who Fell to Earth (2012). A lot of music-oriented films, obviously, and I didn't even count the feature-length performance compilation Fly Jefferson Airplane.

A decent number of my little-checked shorts are from the '60s Fluxus movement.

If I remember correctly, it's set around Christmas time (or maybe it aired around Christmas?). It's about an African-American boy who adopts a stray cat. It's a sweet movie, just like you would think from the description, and under an hour long.

My only official check under 5 checks is "Open Secret", on the More Noirs list. I'm one of just 2 checks - even Walter hasn't seen it! It's a pretty good (and short) noir about anti-Semitism and xenophobia, and it has a great opening scene.

Got 2, and not good ones.
Preparation for the Festival (Japanese list), and Tous les garçons et les filles de leur âge...: Travolta et moi (Cahiers du cinéma). (Btw, why people who love actually the one episode made by Clair Denise don't look at all the execrable series? This one is shit, meaning that people who liked the Denise's one would love this one.)

Note, not checked everything I've seen, but:

12 films with 1 check
20 films with 2 checks
32 films with 3 checks
20 films with 4 checks
30 films with 5 checks

So, 114 with 5 or less checks - 84 with with 4 or less checks. Edit: 214 with 10 or less checks.

Shocked at how many truly great films there was among them., including the masterpiece The Miscreants of Taliwood (2009).

As for yours I guess the simple reason is that all the mainstream trash you watch is only mainstream in France.

Since other people are posting lists of their hyper-ultra-obscure films, here's a selective list of mine:

5 checks:
Afterburn (1992)
