Shouldn't it be specified in the description of 100 American Indepentent Films that the list of titles is from the 2nd edition of the book and not the first?

I have both versions and 25 films from the 1st edition have been replaced by 25 (mostly) newer films released between 2004-2009.

I don't think why we should specifically mention that. We don't mention at 1001MYMSBYD which version that is, right? We always have the latest version. If a third edition will come out on day, we'll update it.

It wouldn't hurt to mention it in some way in both of those cases.

For any book list, there should be a source link that people can click to see which version it is.

If there are multiple versions, it should mention either the edition number or the publication year in the description.

I think just the NYT list. All the other ones that change are from websites.

Gack. These official-list addicts won't rest until the rankings are a straight "How many films have you seen?" measurement.

Maybe we should just make it "Who watched the longest runtime?" But then we should add runtimes to every check on iCM. I know someone who might be determined enough to go through that. :whistling:

I still think all my checks should be added to one official list. That would make it much easier. And than all current official lists could be made unofficial. :guns:

I have 5231 official checks. I have seen 5138 of your films. Maybe my rank would be about the same, either way. ;)

Now go watch Deep End, Profound Desires of the Gods, The Hypothesis of the Stolen Painting and Broadway Danny Rose, for heaven's sake. These need to be official checks in the new system.

I can't speak for others, but I want more Official Lists so that I have more recommendations of things to check out. Preferably more Official Lists from which I have seen very little. It has nothing to do with wanting everything to be Official.

Why can't you use an unofficial list to get recommendations? It's worthless until it gets the "official" stamp?

I have 205 ICM lists bookmarked...15 of them are official.

Nope, never said that. It's just a matter of narrowing down the lists to work on. Again, I can't speak for others, but I enjoy getting the five or six new lists every 6-12 months to gradually add to my bank of lists to work on.

This might be unpopular, but..

Is there a point to having the IMDb's Horror Top 50 list considering we have the 1000 movie TSZDT list?

Those 50 item IMDb lists are seen as great starter lists for newbs who might be a bit overwhelmed (to understate it) by a 1000 item list.

But it's huge genre, so it's fine for me. But I also think it's too big and the Imdb one too small, so I wouldn't mind something in between (Maybe the European Horror list)

I also think the Silent lists are too big.

Yeah if it was up to me, we would just take the top 250 from TZPDT then include a link to the full list for those who are interested.

Maybe I could live with 500. But 1000? Can the 1000th most acclaimed film of a genre even be considered acclaimed?

I respect the project as I know there are many horror buffs who enjoy it, but the full list is too niche for ICM...IMO.

Oh yeah, I don't like that either. Same story: we should keep the top 100 (the ranked section) then have a link to the full list.

Both lists were created by huge enthusiasts of the genre, presumably because it was a personal interest, and they remain good resources for others with the same level of passion. But it's clearly an absurd number for the average user, and it's so far removed from any other genre list. Imagine if we had 1000 westerns, 1000 action films, 1000 musicals, 1000 sci-fis..? That would be silly, and so are these two lists (at full length).

I'm not on a crusade, I'm just being opinionated, so anyone starting to panic about losing official checks can stay calm. ;)

And I swing in the exact opposite direction - I actually want more niche lists. Both long genre lists as well as "interesting" niche lists. A list of 500-1000 Westerns would be interesting to me, even though I don't like Westerns. 1000 Sci-Fi films seems like it could be fun, too. And then there are the mainstream niches (e.g., Directed by Women, Black experience, immigrant experience, indigenous people's experience) and sub-genre niches (e.g., best zombie films, best time travel films).

I'd be interested in seeing them and having them as a reference point, but not in being official. I think large quantities diminish the value of officialdom.

I'd support most of your "mainstream niche" suggestions as they potentially span many different genres and movements but still have one unifying quality that can't be easily found otherwise, but I'm not a fan of subgenres being official as the best are right there in the parent genres. In other words, they are a bit redundant.
