A 50-best cult movies list from "The Ringer", a site I'd never heard of before -

https://www.theringer.com/movies/2021/1 ... ing-top-50

Not particularly valuable though at least they have some description or arguments for why they picked the films they did. Too 80s-90s and America-centered, and without much that hasn't been seen on other cult lists, but what the hell, throwing it out there. I know I always like seeing cult/weird lists and this did have one film that I don't recall ever having heard of - Paid in Full. Also has MacGruber, mathiasa would be happy.

They're not that unpopular. :) Kinda like Vox or Vice outside their "journalism" section, so just anything about TV, media, films, series, music, video games .. entertainment, I guess?

Yeah I looked around the site a little more after posting that, and it looked a little more familiar. But the name of the site isn't exactly memorable to me, and there are so goddamn many mainstream wannabe-hip entertainment sites these days, can't keep 'em all straight. Just another indication that I need to dig deeper if I'm going to find lists that are more interesting.

The Ringer is primarily a sports site that, like everything else on the internet, dabbles in pop culture stuff because those involved want to (and it helps get clicks).

I've moved a bunch, but I'm not good at remembering to update them regularly (like his Top 1000 list  ). I don't mind adding more if you don't mind that they'll be more or less static. Which ones?

No, has to be done manually by title. Occasionally Mubi has completely different names from the ones on imdb, but I think I've managed to always find the right films from Kenji's lists in the past.

IMDb URLs, as generated by my "titles to URLs" program: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ouJXzt ... sp=sharing

Probably about 85% of these URLs are correct, so be sure to double check them and fix the mistakes, but hopefully enough of them will be correct to be useful.

The file includes years and edit distances, so that should make it easier to spot the mistakes.

The original list is chronological, so any year that looks out of place is likely to be wrong, and a larger edit distance is more likely to be wrong.

I put his Top 1000 on icm a while back at someone else's request, but I could never keep up with the updates, and they happen very frequently. If someone else wants to add and maintain a new 1000 list, that's fine with me.

I added the three missing ones to ICM if you want to add those as well. The site may not have indexed them yet but you should be able to add them using their IMDB URLs directly in that second tab.

Also it looks like I need to watch more new Asian horror. I've only seen 12 of them so far (although I own like half of them... just sitting in one of my dozens of unwatched movie stacks :( )

Thank! (though grmbl for it not adding the films but replacing the entire list!)

It's a bit too sleighted to Indonesia and South-Korea for my taste, also very tilted towards the end of the decade, but overall an interesting list. I'm at 17/40 right now.

I'm shocked that I've actually seen 5 of them. That SE Asia challenge certainly helped. Also have 4 or 5 others in stock to see at some point. Yeah, rather interesting, if my interest in horror maintains it's probably a list I should bookmark.

I still prefer the Paste list. It's a little longer at 100, which seems reasonable for such a popular genre -- plus it's consistently updated every year or so. For a genre that is currently very popular, with many major new releases every year, consistent updates seem necessary.

Annual top 10's from magazines are not very consistent, and I think that's particularly true for Kinema Junpo.

I'd say they're a bit too consistent, no? They seem to stick to a rather well-defined type of film.

Yes but what I meant is that an annual top 10 from a magazine is rarely consistent with the all-time (or even decade) top list.

For example, Tokyo Story was voted all-time best Japanese film by Kinema Junpo in 2009 but when you have a look at the annual top 10's, Tokyo Story is not even their best from 1953...go figure...

Maybe they need an extra year or so to delve into something else than drama and refine their "real" top list

Stacker extensively researched the history of Black filmmaking and Black lives captured on screen in both fiction features and documentaries, and compiled a list of 50 diverse films that address the history of racism in America in one way or the other using IMDb data as of June 3, 2020. To amplify Black voices and firsthand experience, the overwhelming majority of the films on this list are made by Black filmmakers. The films are organized chronologically.

Thanks for sharing. I added it to icm: https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/stac ... genaprido/
Just note that it's a list about anti-black racism in America, not racism in general.

I've not heard of Stacker before, but they've got another list that someone put on icm: https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/stac ... samlowery/

Perhaps they'll be a good source for interesting lists in the future.

I added some lists of Dan Sallitt to ICM. He is mostly known as a director, but it shows he has a background as a critic too. Some great lists where I've gained some tips from too.

I don't know if it's more representative of my age, or how out-of-the-loop I am, but I had no idea he'd become a filmmaker - I knew of him just as a critic.

An interesting approach on how to represent subgenres. This from someone on LB who clearly has dedicated his life to exploitation/cult cinema. It's basically a list of top 5's per subgenre of exploitation. Befitting to the subject he goes a bit overboard on the topics, but the end-result is a very nice and varied list I think. Would something like this fill a gap on icm, or otherwise could it be a good replacement for an existing cult list?

Yeah, they had a double feature in one spot. I thought of changing the name, but decided to leave it. I could just remove the number from the title, I suppose.
