Ah, at a quick glance I thought the longer list was just an expansion of the poll. I'll add both separately then. His own 100 is pretty good too. The poll seems to be skewed to more recent films, but I guess that's to be expected since the number of Colombian films produced has skyrocketed in the last decade - on his personal site he lists every single Colombian film since 1915, with 17 already released in 2020!

Also, good to note that this poll explicitly excludes short films (and so does his personal list from what I can tell).

The poll results do look promising indeed, so hopefully we'll receive the full list. The professor's list isn't bad (though I question the inclusion of #8, which is an Argentinian film set mostly in NYC), but probably too long for serious consideration for adoption. Looks like a good list to help explore the country, though, and the vast majority of the films are recent so should be readily available.

Slant's The 100 Best Horror Movies of All Time published two days ago. It's an update of their list from 2013 (which was a Top 200 apparently).

Rare to see The Exorcist outside of a top 5 on such a list, let alone outside the top 20. Otherwise pretty standard - a few odd or somewhat rare choices in the bottom third or so of the list I guess.

No, honestly, thanks for adding it. It's such a weird mixture: Apart from Winnetou films, there's a bulk of comedies at the top and then throughout the list an insane amount of sex films, maybe 20? These were hugely popular from 1968 on, particularly in the early 1970s, like with America's porn chic. There's a short article in the English Wikipedia on the genre of "sex report film", aiming for a more "scientific" approach than Deep Throat and the like.
Especially our comedies belong to the biggest crimes against humanity to be executed from this land in the latter half of the century. 5.4, 6.0, 5.4, 4.8 would be typical IMDb scores for movies that have enormous commercial success here and are usually condemned by cinephiles and critics, yet celebrated by the crowd.

It's peculiar how many of these 100 films are obscure in this day and age, particularly the Report-Filme: 6 have 0 checks on ICM, a few more a single check or two (and who knows if those were really watched or just mixed up?); about 1/4 of these Krautbusters have 10 checks or less, while almost half of the list is below 50 checks. Fascinating.

I have 29/100 checks, by the way (19/50 for Fritz' edition), although I know I saw some of the school film comedies as a child, but which?, so rather 35/100. Haven't seen The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2, yet.

Oh, on this occasion - Das perfekte Geheimnis (2019), a completely unnecessary and worsened remake of Italy's Perfect Strangers from 2016, has only 27 checks on ICM compared to 3000 votes on IMDb. Such a disparity is unusually high.

some fun choices! I love the genre. So I'm at 39/40 seen now with only A Little Princess missing.

What the list misses though, is anything East-European. Maybe one or two wuxia. And not including Conan the Barbarian, still the best of the heroic fantasy genre in movies, is a major oversight. They could have gone for a more "hip" approach and include Krull or Beastmaster... but no, the 80's only get never ending story and princess bride... so childish

There are more from the 80s in that list... 3 from 1988 alone!
But yeah, it certainly is an odd mix of films. Also strange that they only picked 40 instead of the common 50 or 100.

Too late for last month's challenge, but the first chunk of films are all Filipino, for anyone interested in continuing to explore Pinoy cinema. The notes are pretty clear as well on the quality of the picture and if there are English subtitles or not. And they're all from "official" sources, even if they're on YT, so they should be online for a while.

- winners of the Prix Lumières for Best film, Best script, Best director, Best actor, best actress
- winners of the Prix Louis-Delluc
- nominees and winners of the Cesar Awards for Best film, Best script, Best director, Best actor, Best actress
- more than 3 millions tickets sold on the box-office.
Of course, a lot of movies were in several categories (297 theoretical movies, but in the end 125 movies).

I would definitely like to see this expanded out more. Very cool project! I personally think Monster should be higher on the list but its relative obscurity compared to the likes of Cowboy Bebop and Evangelion will probably doom it to a lower spot regardless.

I don't think it really should be official since we already have the Certified Weird list and there's a decent amount of overlap. But it does seem like a fun list folks might be interested in. There are some pretty obscure movies in there I hadn't even heard of which is pretty impressive. A Couple I had to add to ICM. My only complaint with it is that the Horror section in particular has a non-trivial amount of random slasher movies I would certainly not call that strange (Bay of Blood, Frightmare, Day of the Reaper, etc.). Despite that, I'll probably file it away as another list to work on just because it does seem to have quite a few interesting-looking movies I haven't seen on there.

As for the ranking of my anime list (honestly, you don't know what a luxury that is, worrying about ranking rather than inclusion of films ), I definitely stand by it! There's two reasons why I ranked Batman Ninja higher: art style and expectations.

Laputa is one of Ghibli's older film and while definitely a nice, it does show its age. Paprika is nicely animated, but in line with Kon's other work (and certainly not better). Batman Ninja comes with a more original art style, which I definitely appreciated.

As for expectations, I think Ghibli has done way better films than Laputa, it's probably not even in my top 10 Ghibli films. Paprika is also a lesser Kon film imo. I thought the dream motive was a big lazy for the type of films he makes, also Kon doesn't do weird fantasy all that well (mostly talking about the parade here, when he ventures into Yuaasa/Imaishi/Koike territory, it just doesn't really work). Batman Ninja on the other hand ... it was crazy that I actually liked something Batman-related!

So yeah, Batman Ninja has a slight edge.

Yes, I think Monster would be higher if more people had seen it. Monster is #6 on Animetacritic (sorted by average rating of bloggers), but #21 among that same group of bloggers when you sort by number of favorites.
