Another superhero list:
https://www.digitalspy.com/movies/g2471 ... ders-poll/
https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/digi ... ed/mjf314/
Digital Spy's The 50 best superhero movies ranked

And another update for They Save the World, Don't They?.

Now it's based on 17 lists, and every film in the top 50 is on at least 5 lists.

I'd like to find more recent lists (from 2018 or later), but it's getting hard to find more lists.
Here's a list that came up from Rotten Tomatoes which includes several 2019 films and a 2020 film (Birds of Prey). It's their adjusted tomatometer and only movies with at least 20 reviews are eligible: https://editorial.rottentomatoes.com/gu ... -all-time/

A list from The Ringer which also includes multiple 2019 films. It's also a top 105 if you use the ranked honorable mentions list at the bottom: http://superheroes.theringer.com/

A country list for you. The Irish Times selected the top 50 Irish films: https://www.irishtimes.com/culture/film ... -1.4238979.

I've created a list on icm: https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/the+ ... s/obgeoff/

Any idea how I can add this movie that I have not seen to icm as it is on the list but I can't add it to the icm list? https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1297844/reference

I don't want to include the RT list, because the critics never voted on which movies should be considered "superhero movies". For example, Joker is #38, but we don't if the critics actually consider it a superhero movie. And Chronicle seems to be missing, despite having a good RT rating.

I'm not sure if I should include The Ringer, because it's partially based on RT score, but it looks like they decided on their own which films should be eligible.

Edit: Also box office seems to have a big influence on The Ringer list. I don't think I'll include it.

I think that's how RT general does their "all-time" lists. They choose which films meet their criteria, and then simply rank them by their weighted tomatometer score.

Was looking for Japanese superhero movies in particular, but most articles were based on franchises/actual characters, including a lot of anime. I guess it depends where you want to draw the line with the superhero genre.

I feel weird having seen so many of the current list, as it's really a genre I do not like very much.
I think I'd rather stick to lists where all superhero films are eligible.

If I did include these lists, I think Dredd is the only film that would be affected. The others wouldn't make the top 50.

Yeah that's an issue I have - of course it's an issue with many if not most genres. But superheroes maybe more than usual - what IS a superhero? Batman doesn't have super powers, neither do Daredevil or Elektra or the Punisher or many others. On the other hand Tetsuo in Akira certainly does have them but that film isn't typically listed as "superhero". Pulp characters like Doc Savage and The Shadow were created in the 30s before Superman and sometimes get called superheroes - again, no obvious super powers. Dick Tracy was labeled as a superhero film by some when it came out but if that character is "super" then so are Sherlock Holmes and James Bond and every character Arnold Schwarzenegger has ever played. If you get your powers through magic are you a "super" character? If Dr. Strange is a superhero then isn't Gandalf also?

It seems, unfortunately, that most lists and most people writing about the genre just default to something like "characters with costumes appearing in Marvel or DC comics" which is pretty absurd and limiting.

I think Wikipedia has a good definition: "A superhero film, superhero movie or superhero motion picture is a film that is focused on the actions of one or more superheroes: individuals who usually possess extraordinary - generally superhuman - abilities relative to a normal person and are dedicated to protecting the public."

I think Batman fits that definition. Although he doesn't have magic powers, his abilities (fighting skills and gadgets) are greater than a normal person's.

I don't remember Akira very well, but as far as I can remember, Tetsuo wasn't dedicated to protecting the public.

Good point - though many super "heroes" apart from Tetsuo are hardly heroic in the conventional sense. Lots of vigilantes like the Punisher, and even assassins as Elektra originally was. And the Hulk was just as often a menace as a help to humanity in the early days. I guess "hero" is as hard to define easily as "super".

Yeah I understand. Just hope you appreciate the irony that a broader theoretical pool of films results in a smaller pool realistically speaking. :)

These combination lists are fantastic - especially for movie categories that do not seem to have one list that is clearly more definitive, comprehensive etc. than others. I can't wait for someone with statistical skills to tackle e.g.
1) They sing songs, don't they? (music videos)
2) They live happily ever after, don't they? (romantic comedies)

Fantastic, thank you, mjf314! Really nice compilations and a few instant additions to my watchlist.

But still no compilation lists on music videos or romcoms. :( I think that they would certainly deserve similar lists.

If someone adds some more of the music video lists to iCM, then I can put together a compilation. I'm not sure how many of the music videos still need to be added to IMDb.

There are some good romcom lists (IndieWire, Time Out, Paste), but none of them are polls.

Thanks! I might add more music video lists sometime myself when I come accross them. However, it's true that surprisingly many videos still need to be added to IMDb.

Thanks also for the romcom list tip! Other similar lists that I found on ICM were:

I also decided not to add Good Housekeeping's list, because it is limited to films currently streaming, and therefore not interesting to me. :hmph:

I tried searching on French websites and found a couple more romcom lists.

https://www.filmsdelover.com/2015/01/15 ... -lecteurs/
This is a reader poll.

https://www.buzzfeed.com/fr/jennaguilla ... t-vraiment
This is a list of underrated romcoms, so I probably wouldn't use it for a compilation list.

Edit: Also here are a few romance lists from French websites:

Thanks again! I also think that the scope in these kind of compilations has to be "the best of all time" - not the best underrated, not the best streaming right now etc., so the Good Housekeeping and French Buzzfeed lists should be ruled out. Also, "the best romances" lists won't do, unfortunately, because these lists include many other films than romantic comedies (e.g. Titanic, Brokeback mountain etc.). However, the Linternaute list does include a separate section for romantic comedies (top 15, not ranked), so we can include that section only.

So I'll make ICM lists of the filmsdelover and Linternaute lists.

I made a compilation for romcoms, based on 11 lists (CinemaBlend, Empire, Films de Lover, IndieWire, Marie Claire, Moviefone, Paste, Rolling Stone, Thrillist, Time Out London, Vanity Fair). For now I'm only using ranked lists, but I might add more lists later.

I'm using the same half-life (25) as I did for the superhero compilation, but I'm using a smaller list age penalty.

When Harry Met Sally... is #1 by a big margin, and it's #1 on 8 of the 11 lists.

Yes, I'll add it to iCM later.

Does anyone have a suggestion for the list name? I don't want to use "They live happily ever after, don't they?" because I think that sounds like a fairy tale list.

I thought of a title, but I guess it'll only make sense to people who have seen the movie, so I'm not sure if I'll use it.

They'll Have What She's Having, Won't They?

tehe

It's fun. Although, as you said, only the ones who have seen the movie will get it.

I added the romcom compilation to iCM: They'll Have What She's Having, Won't They?

Edit: I made a minor change to the weighting.

I found some Nollywood lists:
https://www.okayafrica.com/20-best-noll ... nollywood/
https://buzznigeria.com/best-nigerian-movies/
https://austinemedia.com/top-20-unforge ... od-movies/
https://www.legit.ng/1178300-best-nolly ... -time.html
https://www.newsweek.com/nollywood-10-films-see-413182
https://briefly.co.za/21785-10-nollywoo ... -time.html
https://afrikanza.com/must-watch-nollywood-movies/

I compiled the lists in a spreadsheet. Here are the films that show up on more than 1 list:
Osuofia In London: 6
Aki na Ukwa: 5
Domitilla: 4
Glamour Girls: 4
Igodo: 4
Living in Bondage: 3
Nneka the Pretty Serpent: 3
Scores To Settle: 3
Most Wanted: 2
The Wedding Party: 2

Has anyone seen any of these films?
I added this list to iCM: They Shoot Nollywood Pictures, Don't They?

Most of these films are on Youtube, and most of them are in English, so you won't need subs.
