1990s and 2000s Critics/Directors Polls Incoming. World of Reel is currently polling 200-plus critics, directors, and industry folk for their choices for Best of the 1990s and Best of the Aughts. The results of the ‘90s poll are set to be published at the end of April, whereas the Aughts poll should be live sometime in early May.

WoR 2010s poll

Don't expect any surprises...
I really hope that critics can make polls on silent films. Somehow I think they over-focus on recent decades.

Yes, sorry, didn't think to link them. I saw them when I was double-checking if the 1980s list had already been added, by searching for "Slant". The 1990s list contains 200 films, for some reason.

I added this list to iCM: https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/habe ... ms/mjf314/

I used my Titles to URLs program to add this list. Before running the program, I added the Hurriyet list to the dictionary file. I didn't input the years, so if I did, it probably would've gotten more films correct.

It got 92 correct. After I finished adding the list to iCM, I changed one of the weights in the code, and now it gets 96 correct.

I recently toiled to compile this list. The list's title is self-explanatory.

My Titles to URLs program got a perfect 50/50. It picked all of the correct URLs. I guess it was easy because the films are popular and they used the same spellings as IMDb.

I just remembered I was still planning to add the two animation lists I promised to add before, but should I consider this one ranked or not?
It doesn't say that it's ranked, and it's not numbered, so I would guess unranked.

My program got 49/51 correct.

I was skeptical at first, but this program is turning out to be a time-saver. I don't have to spend a lot of time double checking everything. I just double check the ones where the edit distance is larger than 0.

How does it work with pagination? I don't find adding lists too tedious unless they use English titles only (which can be troublesome to find some films) or if I have to go through 10 separate pages just to see the whole list.

The program doesn't read webpages. I copy/paste each webpage into Excel, use Excel formulas to get the movie titles, paste them into a txt file, and then run the program. The program searches for the best match for each movie (based on edit distance, number of favorites on iCM, and release year) and outputs a list of IMDb URLs (along with other stats that make it easier to check for errors). The program comes with a file with data for about 40,000 movies, so it searches that file.

If it takes too long to get the list into the proper format, I guess the program wouldn't save much time.

I made a compilation of 9 superhero lists (CinemaBlend, Collider, Empire, Film School Rejects, GamesRadar+, GQ, IGN, Looper, Paste).
- I only used lists that are based on polls, or have at least 2 authors.
- I used exponential decay scoring with a half-life of 25.
- All lists have the same weight. I might change it to give polls and/or recent lists more weight, but I haven't decided yet.

Does anyone have a good idea for a name? I'm thinking maybe "They Shoot Webs, Don't They?" but if you can think of something better, let me know.

I updated the Paste Superhero list on the site today (the 2019 update, from the late 2017 update). I still feel like that list itself provides the best overview of the genre -- plus they seem to update it almost yearly with new films.

I just did a quick search and I found these 2 lists, which include Zebraman.

Maybe too wordy, but how about, "They Save the World, Don't They?"

Honestly, I think superhero films is a subgenre that needs a dedicated list on iCM. It would fill a niche and contribute positively to the list lineup on iCM. I know it's a tired analogy at this point, but superhero films really are the westerns of today. I think the time is right, nearly 20 years after X-Men, to recognize their impact on film and adopt a dedicated list.

Thanks for putting the list together mjf!

Never understood why people say this. Superhero films are not a genre. To me they are ALL action movies! With fantasy or sci-fi elements.

second blueboybob. They're already in the Box Office lists when not inflated in some :imdb: lists.

To note, i'm not trashing them, a few of them are favorites and I do recognize their impact.

But when I feel like watching an action, fantasy or sci-fi flick, I would be disappointed to find a superhero film.

Whatever you want to call it, genre or sub-genre, a lot of people like superhero films.

What if someone wants to watch the best superhero films? Neither the box office list nor the IMDb lists serve that purpose, since there's no easy way to filter them, and the box office list isn't based on quality.

Well, for one, all they can do is search the plenty of Marvel and DC personal lists already existing since those 2 are the juggernauts of the industry.

I added the new version of Time Out's sci-fi list to iCM. Instead of updating the old list, I'm keeping them as separate lists, because the 2014 version is more closely based on the poll.

Original 2014 version: https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/time ... es/mjf314/
2020 version: https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/time ... 20/mjf314/

I think the most interesting thing about that list is the inclusion of films like They Call Me Jeeg, Chronicle, Super and yes, some Zebraman. If a superhero list is just going to rank Marvel/DC + appropriate Pixar films, it's hardly worth the bother.

But yea, those titles are way at the bottom and 1-vote entries, so that's equal to being on some random bum's list I guess.

Now, for a real challenge, find me one that lists Hentai Kamen (either one is fine!)

Hentai Kamen is the only movie on the list. I think only movies with some minimum number of votes are included.

Haha ... I guess you have lists curated by a single person and then you have lists with just one film on them. Instant platinum though!

Click the green button to see the full list. It's an image, which makes it difficult to translate. Would anyone be able to add it to iCM?
I can make a RYM list. I will do it this weekend.
But mind that this is a list completely compiled by cinephiles. None of the voters are critics. Still it is an interesting list.
Done.

I'm trying to add this list to iCM. Can you please tell me where the missing films belong (i.e. which film each one should come after), so I can put them in the correct spot?

I just created this list:
RYM's highest rated film of each film movement
Interesting idea! But why only one film per movement... i have already seen 59/66... don't know if like a top 3 or 5 would give me something to work on, but it would maybe give slightly more context?

I just added links so you can see the description and top rated films of each movement. I also numbered them so you can check which film is from which movement.

Digital Spy's The 50 best superhero movies ranked

And another update for They Save the World, Don't They?.

Now it's based on 17 lists, and every film in the top 50 is on at least 5 lists.

I'd like to find more recent lists (from 2018 or later), but it's getting hard to find more lists.

Was looking for Japanese superhero movies in particular, but most articles were based on franchises/actual characters, including a lot of anime. I guess it depends where you want to draw the line with the superhero genre.

I feel weird having seen so many of the current list, as it's really a genre I do not like very much.
