Thanks
That makes it:
16-11. Davandeh
21-12. Zire darakhatan zeyton
14-13. Khesht va Ayeneh
19-14. Leila
10-15. Aramesh dar Hozur Deegaran
26-16. Tabiate bijan
62-17. Mosaferan
9-18. Gheisar
27-19. Gozaresh
20-20. Ta'm e guilass

Big jump for Mosaferan. Other than that and A Separation, which wasn't made in 2009, things seem pretty steady.

Thanks Angel! Pretty standard list; I haven't yet seen Kandu, not sure I have a copy or if it's available subbed, and there are a few, notably the two Kimiai films Gavaznha and Gheisar, that I don't quite get the love for, but it's a solid enough list I suppose overall. No Rasoulof or Panahi or anything from the Makhmalbaf family...hmm... politics? And only one Beizai though I do think it might be his best film.

Do you mean the top 10 in that link or can you find more results than that? Would be nice to update the ICM list.
So far only the top 10s are available.
I will post the translated results when I have free time.
I am looking for individual ballots so that we have the full results of the whole poll. They did publish individual ballots in the 2009 poll, but I can't one for this one.
I've shared this with my Iranian colleague (as well as the ballots from 2009) and he said he'd take a look and try to find the individual ballots for us, and if he can't do that he'll write to the magazine to try and get them.

Has anyone ever made a list of all the movies that were once on "The Black List" (best unproduced screenplays)?

Google seems to think it's The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, but when I look at the rest of the top 10, I have a feeling he meant a different film.

II was thinking sunrise, but that's not what wikipedia says the Israeli title is.

Surely not Twilight.
The poll was conducted in 1986.

I thought the same.
I suspect that it is Marcel Carne's or Jacques Feyder's Daybreak, but I can't find it's Israeli title.

We could make it Cinema Tropical's decade top X, like the yearly top X lists, but I'm not sure we should.

I think they should be 2 separate official lists. Combining them into 1 list will be inconvenient for the people who want to work on the 2010-2019 list.

Maybe in 30 or 40 years we'll have too many decade lists, but we can reorganize the lists when that happens.

The article says they're releasing the individual ballots today. We should get ahold of those and doublecheck the results if this is destined to become official. Wouldn't be the first time an organization miscalculated the results of their own poll.

Also, Did Cinema Tropical do decade polls for previous decades, or was the one for the 2000s the first one?

Just the first one, they didn't exist before and made the 2000's poll as a kick-off.

So I finally got the Mark Schilling book I was talking about last month. There's also a portion of yearly top 10s, which I haven't gotten around to, but there's also a juicy section with reviews.

For those of you who don't know who Mark Schilling is, he's a longtime writer and reviewer of Japanese cinema, writing (mostly) for the Japan Times. As profiles go, he's the top man in Japanese cinema reviews.

6 films aren't on ICM yet (I'll look into that later, because they are on IMDb), so it's 236 films in total. I've seen 151, upvoted 68 of those, disliked just 2. Which makes this a pretty crazy and worthwhile list in my book. If you're looking to break into contemporary Japanese cinema, it's by far the best list I've come across so far (way better than the Kinema Jumpo lists for example).

I've checked 110 on that list. lot's of interesting stuff, but a list of everything somebody has reviewed is not the same as a top-list, unless he only writes 5-star reviews...

It's pretty close though, not unlike what I've been doing myself. I'd say 95% of the reviews are in the 4-5/5* range, there are only a handful 3.5* reviews and maybe one or two negative ones (surprisingly, Kitano's Dolls is among them). I was planing to add his yearly Top 10s too, but there was simply too much overlap so I didn't bother.

But in the end it's really a book-list, not a top-list, since the reviews are listed by year, not by preference.

Thanks for sharing Onderhond. Looking like a great starting point for exploration indeed. :)

If it turns out to be more official-worthy than the IndieWire list, we could replace it.

I think the source will be, since it's a critics poll. The content of the list seems similar but skewed differently. They say more critics than ever before, I'm curious to see how many and if there are individual ballots. These lists make clear that you could make something bigger than a top 100 films directed by women and still have good and notable films all the way down.

Sounds like a great ressource, I've only seen 22/230, I'll make sure to come back to this list for future recommendations. Thanks for posting!

I think you made a mistake though, film #196 Creep (2014) doesn't have anything to do with Japan. So once this mistake is corrected I'll drop even more to 21/230

Here's the link to the complete article with the full list: http://www.bbc.com/culture/story/201911 ... women-poll

Interesting list with a great poll behind it! I wonder if the reporter would give ICM the individual ballots or the spreadsheet to create a longer list. Like PA said, such a poll would certainly warrant a longer list.

EDIT: I was too hasty - all the individual ballots are linked in the article! So there is material for a longer list...

Yups, thanks for noticing! Already corrected it, also added the 6 missing films (which apparently were already on ICM, but the search to add films is just :circle:

We've never expanded a decent size list, I don't think. Only top 10s.

Anyway I'll see what I can do later. I'm interested in an expanded list regardless of officialdom.

I've updated the ICM list.

Agreed. If this does get adopted, it should stay at 100 to be consistent with the other BBC Top 100 polls.

But let's keep the IndieWire list official for at least the rest of the year and let those films enjoy their time in the spotlight before making any decision, please.

Plus could whoever does those amazing list comparisons (I think it's you PA) do that for this list compared to the other three lists we were considering (Little White Lies, IndieWire, and the other one)?

Oh, and interestingly, all of the top 100 films are already official, and of the 12 films only on 1 official list, only 1 (The Souvenir) is also on the IndieWire list (though it also seems like a film that will be added to the TSPDT 21C list after the next update).

BBC is better, though both are missing essential stuff.

I don't know how the hell BBC has two Deren films and not Meshes of the Afternoon. Edit: No one out of 368 people voted for Meshes? Was there some kind of official decision it wasn't eligible, WTF?

Only two people voted for Mädchen in Uniform, fuck off critics.

Actually, looking through, I wonder if there was an edict not to include films co-directed with a man. It would explain not a single vote for Meshes or Frozen or Shrek or Persepolis.

It would explain not a single vote for Meshes or Frozen or Shrek or Persepolis or De cierta manera.

I'll post an extended list later, some quick info.
They listed films using point values, (#1 is 10pts, #10 is 1pt I think this is stupid, a #1 vote shouldn't be worth 10 #10 votes, but I digress)
There are:
3 films over 100 votes,
8 films over 50 votes
38 films with 20+ votes
85 films with 10+ votes
154 films with 5+ votes
231 films with 3+ votes
342 films with 2+ votes

#100 is 39 pts (5 way tie, 101. La pointe Courte and 102. Shara weren't on the list)
2 films with 10 votes didn't make it (A New Leaf and Blackboards)
2 films made the list with only 6 votes (Ritual in Transfigured Time and Les Plages D'Agnes)
Highest ranked film with under 10 votes is The Long Farewell (Kira Muratova, 1971) with 74 pts from 9 votes, the highest point per vote in the top 100 (in the top 145, even).

For a Top 150 the cutoff would be 25 pts, Two 3 vote films would make it, Eight 4 vote films would make it.
For a Top 200 the cutoff would be 15 pts. Bunch of 2 vote films would make it.

Top 150 is a pretty solid list, from there it gets a bit more random, and also the point system really does its damage. Which isn't to say there aren't some great films in there (and further below).
