Why did I write "Bleech" instead of "Blecch"? What an idiot. :)

First dislike from me.
10 to go!
Find it funny that Shawshank is not on the list, yet:
Haven't even heard of ... Baahubali: The Beginning
It's still eligible for <400!

Perhaps you meant the author should drink some bleach? (no, I do not recommend it)

Odd mix of comedy and war films, and I don't know how they decided upon the order (or the list itself). It spans from 1924 to 2018, and Eldar Ryazanov appears to be the most popular director with 8 titles included (thought it felt like more as I added the list). The search function is really not optimized for adding foreign titles by English names. I think I got it all correct, but someone may want to check.

Contains 34 films on 0 official lists, and there are fair number of mini-series included. A lot of the years listed on the site don't match icm/imdb.

Looks like a populist list, as opposed to a critic-polled list to me. Which makes it interesting and different, but a pretty large portion of those films I'm guessing are fairly hard to find and watch if you're not a Russian speaker, and also perhaps more culturally-specific. Like a list of the bets British cinema that's stuffed full of Carry On films.

I think the list was made by 1 person, Alexandra Guzeva. I don't know if he's a critic, or just a writer for Russia Beyond. I'm also not sure what Russia Beyond is. Is it a newspaper, or just a website?

It's basically propaganda:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russia_Beyond
That puts a lot of the list into perspective. I was baffled in the inclusion of some films and the exclusion of others (especially The Ascent and Come and See), but if it's a state-influenced site then beloved Russian comedies and patriotic war films make a lot more sense. Surprised they still included Leviathan, though maybe that's a red herring to make people think they're truly independent.

Either way, I do think it's an interesting list, and one I would probably work on... but not necessarily one I would promote for official adoption.

It's even missing Man with a Movie Camera.
Which is degenerate experimental crap that doesn't belong in a self-respecting country like Russia, of course.

But still an interesting list indeed.

Man with a Movie Camera is also missing from the Russian Guild list. Maybe they excluded it because they consider it Ukranian (it was made by a Ukranian studio).

But this list has Parajanov as well ...
Which makes it even more strange of course, because Soviet cinema didn't get much more experimental than Parajanov.

Haha, glad you caught it before I had to correct you. It's #68 on the icm list. But yes, as mjf mentioned, it was produced by a studio in Kiev, so if it had been excluded it wouldn't have surprised me too much. Aside from what I've mentioned previously, I think Letter Never Sent is the most surprising omission because I thought it was well-regarded and I don't see it as particularly critical of the state for it to be frowned upon.

Top 10 anime, voted by 900 Japanese people in 2008: https://web.archive.org/web/20080506094 ... 80502.html

In the description they give the top 5, but can anyone translate the rest of the top 10? It's an image so Google isn't able to translate it.

Can't you guess by translating a few of the most probable titles in reverse, or by looking up how they're written in Japanese? I'd do it for you, but I'm not enough into anime to find out which titles to look for.

It'll take awhile to find all of them. #6 seems to be something from the Doraemon franchise, and #10 seems to be something from the Evangelion franchise, but I don't know exactly which anime they are.

6. Doraemon series
7. Kiki's Delivery Service (1989)
8. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2006)
9. The Castle of Cagliostro (1979)
10. Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone (2007)

ドラえもんシリーズ doesn't seem to be a certain film, so I think it just means the movies/series as a whole.

Thanks. I'm surprised that Evangelion: 1.0 would get more votes than the original series, unless it's supposed to be a list of films, but then why are Detective Conan and Doraemon on the list? Maybe it's the movie series, as opposed to the TV series?

Letterboxd’s “Official” Top 100 Highest Rated Short Films Of All-Time

A new companion list to the all-time and docs lists they have on LB (user-curated, not 'official'). Very surprised at some of the entries.
i.e. Possibly in Michigan, which was just mentioned here last year, has 35 checks on icm, 89 votes on imdb, and 3,150 views on lb.
Seen 51, I think (I don't put shorts on lb, yet), but I expect some of our shorts-fiends would have seen most if not all of these entries.

https://letterboxd.com/film/leading-lady-parts/ Is the one I'm most intrigued by.

Don't be surprised...that list is junk with near zero credibility. Music videos by Lana Del Rey (THREE OF THEM!), Lady Gaga, Brockhampton, Haim, Beyonce, Arctic Monkeys, Troye Sivan, the Lumineers, two Korean boy bands....some parody short connected with the "It's Sunny in Philadelphia" series...an Apple commercial...heavily slanted toward very recent stuff.... Several don't even have IMDb pages. A few others had IMDb pages but weren't on ICM -- I did add them. These adds did result in one substantial gain -- "David Lynch Cooks Quinoa" was somehow not on ICM and now it is. How about that?

But when I'm one of ICM's top shorts-watchers yet only have seen a measly 56 of those 100 shorts...come on.

Looks like a solid list, actually. I really wish they wouldn't have stopped at 2000, though as there have been some amazingly shot films since then.

Only one to see, and it's one that's been on my radar for a long, long time. Just haven't gotten around to it yet. (Samsara)

The American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) released a list of 100 films that showcase the best of cinematography as voted on by ASC members. They presented a list of 100 films, with the top 10 ranked.

Looks like a solid list, actually. I really wish they wouldn't have stopped at 2000, though as there have been some amazingly shot films since then.

Only one to see, and it's one that's been on my radar for a long, long time. Just haven't gotten around to it yet. (Samsara)
41 for me. Samsara is a great way to finish this list. Very important movie for me.
