You have Paul Morrissey's "Heat" (1972) on the list, but this is a film with two IMDb pages and two ICM pages (unfortunately, I don't think this dupe can be fixed unless someone gets IMDb to do it).

The commonly checked page for "Heat" is the other one (130 checks). Yours has zero checks. I would change it to the more popular page.
Yea, I thought that URL seemed weird. Should be fixed now.

Thanks. I really combed through that list last night. I jotted down 52 films I'd like to track down, though I imagine about half of them will be impossible.

The ones that most attract me include:
Little Malcolm and His Struggle Against the Eunuchs (which already was high on my watchlist)
Leo the Last (I have this unchecked, but I may have seen it on TCM many years ago)
Up the Junction
Separation
The Long Distance Piano Player
Toomorrow
Rote Sonne
The Final Programme
The Body
30 Is a Dangerous Age, Cynthia
Dope
Every Home Should Have One
A Stone in the Bush (short)
Improvisation sur un dimanche après-midi (impossible to find, I'm sure)
Son of Dracula

I already watched "Cucumber Castle," which was interesting but terrible as expected.

Does anyone have access to the pre-code book "Sin in Soft Focus: Pre-Code Hollywood"? There was a list on iCM from this book in the past which I think was one of the better ones for the genre, but it's gone now. I think Arthur had posted it before, but since he deleted his account a while ago it's nowhere to be found. Would be nice to have it back.

Son of Dracula is a weird one. Very dry comedy with an odd tone to it.

I finished compiling all sci-fi lists into 1 list, kindasorta taking over from Mathiasa's TSADT project
https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/all+ ... armoreska/
one category I wish was more represented was sci-fi anime with just 1 short list I found but also didn't want to add long, low effort lists.
could do with more ideas for lists. I think I need an Apocalyptic list at least.

this is my 4th or 5th me(t/g)alist, will probably add many more later

Looking at the list (sorted achronological) of film I haven't seen yet, it's mostly series, which is a bummer. Doctor Who, The Expanse, The Mandalorian, Good Omens, ...

Game of Thrones

Oh, and when I do see films, it's stuff like Hidden Figures. Genre: history :D

I did pick a TV list, ofc. Just one though, a few were on other lists already.
https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/the+ ... armoreska/
And yes, there's noise as explained in the descrip, besides the awards lists are split between fantasy and sci-fi.
Those episodes are from Hugos.
A possible solution is to move them out into the fantasy list but I'm unlikely to spend attention points on that.

I'd remove noise from the more random lists tho:
iCheckMovies favorites from 2012 (not sure how scifi some of them are, I've noticed movies that are not tagged SF anymore)
They Shoot Aliens Don't They (deleted Hobbit)

You have "Buffy" and "Aeon Flux" movies on there, not the TV shows.

Is the mega-list ranked?

 oops forgot to check the extended view for movies added, found 4 errors

no, just layered, that is I added ranked lists first before adding non-ranked, then award nominees, then odd lists. but Mathiasa's was probably ranked, I'm not sure, not an interest for me.

On the rec.arts.anime list, everything from #29-54 got 1 vote, so it's random near the bottom.

You have "Utena" movie on there - I think it should be the series.

I don't see "Voices of a Distant Star" on the source list. Maybe it just got lost in (Google) translation.

Should
https://www.icheckmovies.com/movies/astroboy/
be replaced with
https://www.icheckmovies.com/movies/tetsuwan+atomu/
?

Thanks for making these

Thanks. I replaced Astro Boy with the Japanese version, and the Utena movie with the series.

Voices of a Distant seems to be correct.

ほしのこえ(2002)-新海誠

That's the Japanese title according to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voices_of_a_Distant_Star

I'm continuing to look for a list that recognizes excellence in film acting. This list definitely isn't it, but I added it to iCM anyway for laughs: Richard Brody's The Best Movie Performances of the Century So Far: https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/rich ... beasterne/

Some really off the wall choices in this one--Adam Driver in the 1st season of Girls and Eddie Murphy in Norbit for example

There was an iCM Forum poll for best performances: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=1945

I just did a quick google and found these other lists.

Thank you for the links! I actually already added the 2nd one to iCM a couple years ago, but I like the look of the 1st one! I'll probably try to add that as well at some point :)

I really love this list and it's worth posting the article it comes from as well -

https://www.newyorker.com/culture/the-f ... ury-so-far

not only is it a good read but you also need to look at it to see WHICH performance is taken from each film - usually it is the lead but not always, most significantly Joe Pesci is the actor listed for The Irishman. It's a bit weird to think of documentarians as "actors" but he explains his several choices in this area well - I especially like picking Panahi for Taxi. And any list that spotlights Anna Paquin in Margaret and Helena Howard in Madeline's Madeline is more than OK by me even if inevitably I don't agree with all of his choices.

Best performance lists I find typically depressing and dull - they seem even more oriented towards the usual suspects than other kinds of best lists to me, and it seems that there is an over-arching ranking of what are each "great" actor's bests that rarely is deviated from - Brando ALWAYS has to be there for Streetcar and/or Waterfront for example. Case in point with the other two lists posted by mjf - both list Stewart for Veritigo but not Kim Novak, and not Stewart for It's a Wonderful Life. I guess we're all supposed to accept Meryl Streep's Sophie's Choice as he top work now, and Gena Rowlands in A Woman Under the Influence? Very much the same old same old and, as usual, too Hollywood-centric and too male-centric.

I should get back to working on my own list dammit, but it's harder than most other lists to do.

Here's another list I made from a book I have:
Spectacular! The Story of Epic Films

While it appears to be outdated since it was released in 1974, I think that actually makes for a good cut-off point to represent the golden era of epics. By the mid-70s, they started to give way to disaster pictures and almost disappeared in the '80s before coming back in the '90s and '00s as Oscar bait (not that plenty of them weren't Oscar bait before the '70s). Looking at the list, I was actually kind of surprised by just how many of these are on few to no official lists. It seems like a lot of people just slot the biggest ones on the lists like Lawrence of Arabia and ignore the rest.

I feel torn on these. TDADT has Night is Short Walk on Girl, Promare and Wolf Children but Paste has Cat Soup and Genius Party....

How many lists have factored into They Draw Anime and what kind of weighting does it have?

paste 70/104
yours 76/106

I like that yours has something from Revolutionary Girl Utena on it (as mentioned in this thread before). I basically don't watch series, so a lot of anime passes me by, and I don't dare to seek out the movies based on them (because they either require you to know the series or are a weak rehash/compilation of the series)... but Utena has a specific niche cult appeal that has put it on my radar. The UK DVD of "the movie" seems very hard to obtain at a reasonable price though, and there is this doubt that it might not live up to the books and the series... should I seek it out, or is there another place to start?

My thoughts exactly - forget the rest actually, it's all about whether a list has Cat Soup or not. :D

Both are very good, I assume.

I used 19 lists.

I counted single-person lists as unranked, so each film gets the same number of points. For polls, I gave points based on the number of votes.

The polls had a lower points-per-vote than the single-person lists, but a higher total points for the films that got a large enough number of votes.
19 lists
Lists made by 1 person:
Anime Princess
Empire
Game Usagi
Improb
Kinema Junpo
Lobster Quadrille
Mike Toole
ONE37pm
Paste
Sabukaru
Sight & Sound
The Daily Quirk
TheCinemaholic

Polls:
Compilation of bloggers' favorites (the same bloggers that were used for Animetacritic)
SF Signal
Shinchosha
iCM Forum animation poll (I removed the non-anime movies)
rec.arts.anime
Time Out animation poll (I removed the non-anime movies)

It's basically a re-telling of the series, but they changed some parts of the story. The movie is worth a watch, but I (and most people) think the series is better, so I recommend watching the series first. The series is #3 on They Draw Anime, Don't They?, in case that gives you more motivation to watch it.

Cat Soup is #122 at the moment. I tried to find another list that includes Cat Soup, but without success.

I generally have no use for anime, but "Cat Soup" is one of the few I've seen that did something for me.

Here's the rest of the top 139. After the top 139, everything is only on 1 list, so it's not very interesting.

flavo5000 wrote: March 9th, 2021, 9:09 pm Here's another list I made from a book I have:

Thanks for that! I kind of love this sort of stuff - in small doses anyway (if that isn't an oxymoron for these typically huge films). I always watch a few Biblical films around Easter - my religious fix for the whole year - and I have my own list that I've been compiling for years but it's one I've been lazy with and haven't really worked on enough. This list will help for sure - few things I hadn't heard of there and several more I should have remembered and should have seen by now.

Oh, in case anyone feels we don't have enough giallos lists out there, here's another one I created from a book I have:
Giallo Meltdown: A Moviethon Diary

This one is a little novel compared to the others as it isn't so much attempting to be an authoritative source on gialli but is a beat-by-beat account of a series of giallo marathons a guy watches over a period of several years. So it's got an interesting mix of really well-known and super-obscure ones as well as some giallo-influenced stuff that isn't strictly giallo.

My They Draw Anime, Don't They? list is going (semi) viral on Reddit.

https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments ... _all_time/

I posted it on r/AnimeSuggest, and it got about 590 upvotes, but the mods deleted it. Apparently posting a list of anime is against the rules.

Then I posted it on r/anime, and it has about 475 upvotes so far.
