For 99.99% of its users, film is entertainment, not work? I'm betting those who actually need it for work or on the Pro tier of IMDb?

There are about 4? more reasons to watch various movies that are neither work nor entertainment. And those two would be the least prominent. When I want entertainment, I'll play a game. They are on average at least twice as entertaining as watching an action movie. Or watch (e-)sports.

I guess the new design would somewhat improve entertainment for those who crave that but is it going to streamline workflow? Doubt it.

Well that's like calling work entertainment and vice versa. Sure it's possible that some part of it can be but usually we don't switch those terms, right?
there's a saying that enjoying work is like stealing from one's employer

wonder if not enjoying entertainment 'news' is like stealing from Amazon's IMDb

occasionally some trivia can entertaining, but honestly, I avoid all the entertaining aspects of the site - just the facts, ma'am

Just see the amount of deterring crap and imagery in the latest design. Then realize that you don't even get to see the cast list up to that point. Just what would you want to see on a movie page at first?

Removing the release year from the film title would be a new pinnacle of IMDb's anti-practical layout idiocy.
I do agree there is a lot of superfluous stuff and it could be much improved. But I think there are pros and cons between the two. Some of the stuff you've blocked as useless, I use a lot - e.g. the watchlist button, which also has a dropdown for quickly adding/removing a film from other lists you have - that is v useful if you use IMDB lists and much improved from the ref view. The cast list should be above 'People who liked this...' and the videos/photos for sure - just having the first few names is not enough. But then on reference view, how far do you have to scroll to see the runtime?
You make valid points and arguably in any change there will be some positive things like new features or functionality, - I have no problem with that, but I do have a problem with new changes being made just for the sake of changing something that works just fine, i.e. new layout adds nothing in terms of new functionality/features yet removes some absolutely basic stuff like year of release.. rating films requiring 2 clicks instead of 1? Is that an improvement? If we compare the 3 layouts I would generally pick the reference view with just a few minor changes (e.g adding runtime etc.).

Remember when we were annoyed at IMDb because rating a movie required two clicks instead of one? Well, I just found out they increased it to three.

Fuck this shit, these movie pages look horrible now. I'm switching to reference view.

I did a few years ago but was annoyed by something, so I switched to the general version.
Maybe it's just that including the "reference" in the URL, if you copy+paste them as much as I do, fucks up a few search engines / previews in messengers.
It's intolerable that as a permanent user I have to deal with this crap and organize workarounds ..

I get what you are saying and am uninterested in defending IMDb. However, with reference view, all I have to do is paste the tt number into the search box and viola, I'm in reference view. Even on my phone. It bypasses the mobile site and just gives me reference view if I click on, say, the link to IMDb on an iCM movie page. Now I can't remember if I had to change a setting on my phone somewhere along the route or not. So, IMBb's computer forwards http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0023382/ to -> https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0023382/reference

Caveat on my phone (and maybe browser, but I rarely open IMDb straight on my computer - I usually am pasting a tt number into my browser's IMDb search function), when I just go to IMDb.com, I get their main mobile page which is slower than a slug swimming through molasses in Greenland in January. It's the one time I prefer to be able to access the pages via almost anything else.

The one annoyance on my computer with reference mode is when I need to grab a URL to paste into something like iCM's "add movie" form or a list, then I have to remember to either not copy "reference" or delete it before submitting the form.

I did open a link to IMDb from a browser I don't have logged into IMDb earlier today and thought the page a huge pain in my ass. :worship: reference view :worship:

Oh, man, i'm really angry... why do they need to fuck things upt?! Also the while links thing is not working on the new layout so the only option left is reference view... now we can only hope they don't disable that..
