Should we adopt a list of kids/family movies?

#1

Post by mjf314 » August 5th, 2020, 6:13 pm

Do you think any of the available lists are good enough to be adopted? I'm especially interested in hearing opinions from kids and parents.
Are you interested in working on a kids list?
Do you think kids would be interested in working on it?
Do you think parents who watch movies with their kids would find it useful?
Is it important for a kids list to tell you exactly what age each movie is appropriate for?

We have several options to consider:

BFI's 50 films to see by age 15 (original source)
69 films. Published in 2020. It's an updated version of the 2005 list. They included all movies from the old list, and added 15 additional movies.
For most of the movies, they tell you the rating (U, PG, 12, or 15).
The 2005 version was #25 in the "lists that should be official" poll, with 33% votes in round 1.

Empire's The 50 Best Kids' Movies (original source)
50 films. Updated in 2018 (the iCM list is the 2016 version).
The list doesn't tell you what ages each film is appropriate for.
This list was #34 in the "lists that should be official" poll, with 30% votes in round 1.

The Telegraph's The 77 Best Kids' Films of All Time (original source)
87 films. Published in 2016.
The list doesn't tell you what ages each film is appropriate for.
This list didn't make the final round in the "lists that should be official" poll, but got 21% votes in round 1.

Common Sense Media's Best Movies for Families (original source)
194 films. I don't know when it was updated, The most recent movie is from 2017.
The list is separated into 3 age groups (2-6, 7-12, 13-17), but they also tell you exactly what age each movie is appropriate for They also tell you what type of content is in the movie, to help parents make a decision.
This list wasn't in the "lists that should be official" poll.

Pixar's Picks: Family Films (original source)
142 films. Published in 2020. A group of Pixar filmmakers each picked their favorites. The list includes all films with at least 1 mention. Surprisingly, this list only includes 1 Pixar film (Toy Story).
The list is separated into 3 age groups (all ages, 7-12, 12 and over).
This list wasn't in the "lists that should be official" poll.

Scholastic's 100 Greatest Movies for Kids (original source)
100 films. Published in 2013.
Each movie is in one of 4 age groups (3-5, 6-7, 8-10, 11-13).
This list wasn't in the "lists that should be official" poll.

101 Movies to See Before You Grow Up (original source)
101 films. Published in 2015.
For most of the movies, they tell you the rating (G, PG, PG-13).

Been sporadically watching kids movies for ages. (it says so in my signature)
BFI - 51/69
Empire - 48/50
Telegraph - 83/87
Common Sense - 162/194

Looking over the lists I much prefer the BFI list over any of the others. It's not perfect, but it's far superior to any of the other lists. Less Disney/Pixar and a much greater cultural variety. I don't like the Pixar list's inclusion of straight-up horror movies (Alien, really?) and, to my mind at least, both the 77 Best Kids Films and Empire lists have far too much Disney/Pixar in them and most of the rest of the entries on those lists are English language.

Let's face, neither Disney nor Pixar really need a list of movies, kids are going to watch those either way, such is their cultural dominance (and I say that as someone who has a fair chunk of both on my shelves). So for my money, the more non-Pixar, non-Disney movies on such a list the better. Second, I would like children to be exposed to other languages and cultures and I think the BFI list does a much better job of that than the other lists do. In fact, all the other lists are more or less interchangeable to me. It's the BFI list and "the rest" and "the rest" is a distant second.

@Armoreska: I just added Scholastic and 101 to the first post. I think Boys' Life and CFB are too old. CFB is also a forum poll, and we usually don't adopt those.

@Knaldskalle: What about kids who know nothing about movies, and haven't watched any Pixar movies? I think including 3 or 4 of the best Pixar movies is reasonable.

This is a topic that is better left to those who have and understand younger minds much better than I do.

However, and I don't mean to denigrate the topic, and yes, I would work a list of movies for younger audiences as I do all the rest, I do enjoy it when my dog finds whatever I'm watching interesting as well. My current dog is the most interested in watching images of any dog I've yet had. So yes, I think parents would enjoy some guidance on good movies to watch with their children: people do enjoy doing things with those they care about.

two things come to mind: parents are likely to share movies they remember fondly from their youth and kids will watch what is marketed to them or they are exposed to via friends.

No, I don't think people would need much help 'remembering' Disney/Pixar/or even Ghibli hits - maybe guidance towards the lesser known titles? And my belief is that their culture dominance is pretty universal. Really, there's a place where no one's heard of Lion King or Toy Story? Like ever?

Taking a look at the lists, my favorite or the one I found most well rounded is the BFI one. But this is coming from a 34 year old with no children but a 15 year old nephew who loved Totoro when I showed him 7 years ago.

As a kid, however, I think I would stay away from that one and I would probably go to the Empire or the Telegraph list which has a lot of movies I grew up with, but they're skewed to american movies.

The Pixar list is interesting but if it's only the section Pixar Directors Recommend: Films for Families (7 to 12 Years) instead of all lists combined. I don't like The Common Sense for the reasons that Knaldskalle pointed out. This is just my input.

@xianjiro: There are some parents who haven't seen The Lion King or Toy Story.

I counted the number of Disney and Pixar feature films on each list, in case anyone wants to know.

BFI: 2 Disney, 2 Pixar (out of 69) (5.8%)
Empire: 7 Disney, 8 Pixar (out of 50) (30%)
Telegraph: 14 Disney, 11 Pixar (out of 87) (28.7%)
Common Sense: 16 Disney, 8 Pixar (out of 194) (12.4%)
Pixar: 7 Disney, 1 Pixar (out of 142) (5.6%)
Scholastic: 10 Disney, 5 Pixar (out of 100) (15%)
101: 7 Disney, 9 Pixar (out of 101) (15.8%)

I think Empire and Telegraph are the only lists that have too many Disney and Pixar films (judging by the percentage).

Just looked at BFI ...... again......

There are so many movies on it that are totally uninteresting to children, even 14 year olds. They want to be entertained. From a list of movie recommended to kids, I expect quality movies that entertain average kids. The number of kids who are entertained by watching an Abbas Kiarostami picture is very very very low. Yes, I know some people here watched world cinema and classic Hollywood when they were under 15, but remember you are extreme exceptions. Let a 14 year old, who likes watching movies (but not especially cinema as an artform), watch Playtime and he might like a little bit for a minute or two, but he will be booooored for the rest of the movie. And what's the point of a kid watching Etre et Avoir? It's just daily school routine, which they encounter themselves everyday. They don't want to watch that. If you say to them "this is a quality movie", they won't explore cinema any further and they certainly won't take the list seriously.

I expect a list with movies for kids to recommend quality movies that are entertaining for kids and to show them that "old movies" (meaning older than 5-10 years) can be fun as well. That either means that there should be enough happening or that it's something they can relate to.

So Raiders of the Last Ark is a good pick but Where Is the Friend's House? is a ridiculous choice. Just to name two extremes from the same era.
Singin in the Rain? Okay, could be fun, I could see my kids enjoy it. Ladri di Biciclette? Booooooooring.......
Star Wars? Yeah, if they can see through the dated special effect, they might have fun. Walkabout? Come on! Nothing happens! They just walk and walk and walk......

It's a pointless list to me. As a parent it's of no use to me.

I have no kids myself, but this was my first reaction to this list. Maybe because it's one of the reasons it took so long before I got serious about film. There are my films here "adults" (i.e. teachers and the like) were trying to push on us when we were younger. I'm sure there's the odd kid out there who is full on ready for El Espíritu de la Colmena when he's 14, but 99.9% of the kids are going to be put off by it.

As for a children's list, I've been keeping track of the Box Office list for a while and a subset of that seems like a good place to start. It has all the usual stuff kids like (hence the big box office returns). Finding a list with more "alternative" films for kids would be nice, but challenging. I've taken a look at the other lists, but I think it's probably just best if parents give feedback.

Also not sure what the age limit is we're going for, but if it's 15 then I see no problem with including a film like Alien.

As a kid, I think the Scholastic list would've been the most appealing to me, but the Telegraph and Empire list are also ok. Lots of those films I saw as a kid, not that I loved all of them but they mostly seem suitable. I don't know what kids these days want, but I definitely agree about the above criticisms re things like Playtime, Children of Heaven etc. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Chariots of Fire, Field of Dreams wtf? It's strange to think of Star Wars not being appealing to kids but maybe it is outdated.. I didn't see the films until I was about 15. The BFI list is the absolute worst, what a random mix of films.

One thing I can say with certainty: the movies I liked when I was 5 were different than when I was 10 or 15. Probably the only other contribution I can make now is: woe unto he who has to get a 5 year old to watch the same film with a 15 year old. And yes, I know from experience because my brothers are 10 and 11 younger than me and at 14 I left home to live with my grandmother - the next year we had cable and HBO - so by 15 I was watching R rated stuff pretty regularly.

Clearly different target audiences: no one list is going to be everything to every child.

yes, the difference in "age" between small kids and teenagers is extremely huge. For smaller kids I agree a list with mostly Disney style entertainment would be the only agreeable thing. But for teens I think they would/could actually enjoy most of what is on BFI. If they are interested in culture and the world and are broadening their horizons (either in a natural way or guided by school assignments) the BFI list is very well curated towards that. As a childless cinephile myself, I would choose that list ;) Parents looking for advise on what to see with their smaller children I would not send towards ICM, but more towards the Common Sense list/website. We should maybe split this subject in two to stop the discussion getting too muddled...? is there room for adopting two lists to cover both extremes in this subject?

I am parent of 9 year old daughter and I agree with J. I guess there is a difference between good films that children watch and good films with child protagonist. I have been regularly watching films with her and what I feel is, she hates to watch realistic drama films with child protagonist. Where is the children's home, bicycle thieves had been failures with her. Red Balloon, Matilda, pixar, stuart little, when marnie was there were huge favs of her. So I dont suppose My life as a dog or the likes would be great watch for kids. At least for 9 years.

Her other favorites include, disney princesses, Chaplin, Keaton, Harold Llyod and Dwayne Johnson! Jumanji, San Andreas, Tooth fairy are probably in her top 10 non animated films :)

Tommy's daughter is already miles ahead of my daughter. She mostly watches Pixar, fairytales, etc... and the occasional light-hearted life-action movie like Princess Diaries. No way I can get her to watch Chaplin or Keaton (what?! no sound?!). She liked Jumanji (the Williams version, she thought it was really scary though), Willy Wonka, Matilda, Mrs. Doubtfire. That was the most "quality"-stuff I've been able to get her into.

I just took a look at the Empire source and saw they've kicked off Honey I shrunk the kids to include The Kid who would be King. Not sure if they made any other changes. I actually watched TKWWBK a few days ago for the <400 checks challenge and thought it was uninteresting and irritating. This plus the inclusion of Shrek 2 over the original Shrek in a list of only 50 films and being 30% Disney films is enough for me to not want this list official.

BFI list has a great selection, but isn't really a list of children's films, it's a list of films to get a teenager interested in film. A lot of the more thoughtful films wouldn't work for children below 13.

The Telegraph list isn't that interesting, but is a decent selection that I think kids would enjoy.

I don't think the Common Sense Media list or 101 Movies to See Before You Grow Up list fulfils the brief, they're more like a generic list of best films.

The Pixar list I think has a great selection, but the inclusion of films for ages 12 and above again seems more like a list of best films. I'm not sure I'd recommed sitting down with a 12-year-old to watch The Shining together. Could we adopt the films for all ages and films for 7-12 years old separately?

I like the Scholastic one a lot. It has a very good selection, mixing together traditional classic family films and more obscure ones. Would be my choice for adoption if we couldn't take out the teenager films from the Pixar list.

Yeah this was why I didn't like it. It was a more varied and interesting selection of films overall but I can't picture a 'kid' caring at all about most of those films.

I watched both versions of The Shining as a kid. The mini-series was pretty traumatic so I loved it, and I watched the original alone when I was 11 and I was totally bored. Definitely a weird pick.

try running it backwards - that was the ticket when I was young and we kids (friends from the neighborhood) just couldn't get enough. Keystone Cops were a favorite.

Other things I remember being very popular with kids were 3 Stooges (ugh) and Our Gang/Little Rascals (Spanky, Alfalfa, Darla, Buckwheat, Porky, etc though obs this isn't going to fly these days for fairly obvious reasons). No idea how today's kids would react to them, but they were very popular in reruns on afternoon TV in the late 60s and early 70s - you know, back in the dark ages and believe it or not, we actually had electricity and TVs back then B)

Scholastic is aimed at elementary school kids - or at least it was when I was that age. Back then, we'd get lists of kids books that we could purchase very cheaply. Weekly Reader was probably used in most American classrooms back then. And didn't Scholastic have a hand in publishing/distributing the Harry Potter books? I'd swear I remember their logo on those.

Of the options presented, I think the BFI list is my preference since it features some silent comedies, which I know kids today still love.

The Pixar List also features some silent comedies, but it has many questionable picks too, and while I would usually preference longer lists because they tend to be more diverse, some of the Pixar choices are downright loony. I wouldn't be happy showing my kids Us or The Shining on the original It. I also can't imagine any of them sitting through a dramatic talk-fest like Little Women.

Are you interested in working on a kids list?
Do you think kids would be interested in working on it?
Do you think parents who watch movies with their kids would find it useful?
Is it important for a kids list to tell you exactly what age each movie is appropriate for?
1. Sure
2. Maybe
3. Probably not - most parents I know just scroll through Disney+
4. Nope; I would just prefer a general "all ages" (or all preteen ages) list

For the record, I don't have kids of my own, but I have worked with kids aged 5 to 11 for the past ten years.

That is an excellent find actually! Cinekid is one of the bigger kid-film-festivals and the genre is rather big in Dutch cinema. In European cinema in general (netherlands, scandinavia, germany), and this list reflects this. Also still enough American and even world cinema in there.... could be a serious candidate...

What's the target age of Scholastic?
Each movie on the Scholastic list is in one of 4 age groups (3-5, 6-7, 8-10, 11-13).

Here's a pdf that lists all of the films and age groups: https://web.archive.org/web/20150601073 ... _hires.pdf

Scholastic seems to me like a list that would appeal to kids, and I don't think it includes too much Disney/Pixar. However, it's a little bit old (it's from 2013). I'm also ok with the Pixar list (first 2 sections).

I also like the Common Sense list because they tell you what ages each film is appropriate for, and the ages (usually) seem fairly accurate.

That may be true for the 3rd section of Common Sense (13-17), but I think the first 2 sections are good recommendations for kids. I think any list of recommendations for teens is likely to feel like a generic list.

Maybe we need to research some better lists? (no, I don't have the spare time to offer my services, sorry)

Ideally, we need a list with a decent selection of silent comedies. The Pixar list appears to have the most (5) but it also has quite a few entries that would make the list look like an absolute joke were it adopted (see my post upthread).

Knowing what kids like, it would be good to get something with some Jerry Lewis in there. Amazing how much appeal his best work still has these days; very effective for kids aged 5-11, shown some of his stuff off to all ages. Rock-a-bye Baby is always a hit - especially that hose gag.

Silent movies:
BFI: 2 (Le voyage dans la lune, The Kid)
Empire: 1 (The Kid)
Telegraph: 0
Common Sense: 1 (Modern Times)
Pixar: 5 (The Kid, The General, Steamboat Bill, Jr., City Lights, Modern Times)
Scholastic: 1 (Modern Times)
101: 0

Yeah, exactly my point as raised upthread. BFI is the best list for capturing the breadth of films that appeal to kids these days. Kids still love silent comedies. It would be short-sighted for us to adopt a list without any in it.

The Pixar list would almost be acceptable, were it not riddled with R-rated titles.

The pixar list is made up of various parts, so the part with the r-rated titles could be left out...?

That would be acceptable to me. In fact, I might even support adopting the list under that condition.
