"Dead" Lists.

#1

Post by Tim2460 » August 13th, 2019, 9:05 am

Hello Everyone :

Going throught the sources of the Lists, i'm trying lately to tell if an lists will or not be updated in the future.

On the sheet below, these is an A for active, or D for Dead and the year it was updated for the last time or created....

Anyone saw an obvious error ?

Idea behind that is not t oupdate theses Dead list every month to create the Official Lists... if there's supposed not to move anymore.

The Cahiers one gets updated every year, so that's obvious
But there are also a few in there with periodic updates like sight and sound, the new Brazil list, Junpo
... That is at first glance, so there might be more...

Hmm Cahier/yearly is a clear Mistake : thx ,)

For S&S and brazillian stuff i'll move them to the Active category as they "could" be updated.

Could be expained that it could/will be updated in the portugese source ... But my Portugese isn't that good... i was almost lost in translation @ Rio hehe

It's also cool to try to Platinium Dead List... They won't trool you next week like the IMDB ones hene

Thx Beavix : any help/another pair of eyes is apreciated.

The Sight and Sound combined list is active. It gets updated every decade.

Corrections:
  • Criterion's Eclipse Collection - Dead - last time I checked, the Eclipse link didn't work and they haven't released anything new in ages
  • 366 Weird Movies (Certified Weird) - Dead - list is now completed (completed 2018)
  • Cahiers du cinéma - Yearly top 10s - Alive - as mentioned above
Not sure:
  • Academy Award Best Foreign Pictures - this award is being renamed for the 2020 Ceremony, but I think it's technically the same award
  • Roger Ebert: the great movies - depending on the outcome of the Up series (but yes, technically 'dead')
  • Sight and Sound -The Greatest Documentaries - thought this got updated at the same time as the main list??
  • iCheckMovies - Most Checked - I think this is the most static list of all the active ones on iCM, though it is technically not dead - just hard to penetrate

Wasn't he considering adding more movies to the 366 weird movie list ? I remember reading it somewhere but can't vouch for the source.

366 Weird have started a new list of 366 Apocryphally Weird Movies. So far it has one entry, The Happiness of the Katakuris. It has not been added to the iCheckMovies list, but we had a discussion about this in another thread when they first announced they would be adding a second set of 366, and people agreed that they should be added to the main list.

I'm definitely happy with the expansion of the list, but calling The Happiness of the Katakuris "apocryphally weird" is pretty much cuckoo. Watched that film again this weekend and it's downright bonkers. Much more so than most entries on the main list.

Bottom line though ... yay, expansion!

I had another look at the sources of both Caimán / Spain and Abraccine / Brazil because I wasn't actually sure anymore which one of those (or maybe both?) was supposed to be getting an update every 5 years. But this information is not to be found in those sources. Mjf keeps beter tabs on these things, so he should know what's up with that. Maybe better to put the status for these two to 'uncertain' at the moment :) They might be static, but I'm sure that at least for one of these two the fact that it wasn't supposed to be static was óne of the arguments for replacing a previous list.

Oh, I would absolutely love for the 366 Weird list to be continuously expanded on iCM, but I thought that notion was shot down by the list-mods when we debated it at the time. I don't know. There were definitely some firm naysayers out there.

I suppose that we should highlight The Happiness of the Katakuris in the Official List Updates thread and see if a list-mod accepts it as film #367?

It actually wasn't as big a discussion as I recalled (or as negative as I recalled) but it obviously left me with the impression that the 366W list would not be further updated. Happy though if that isn't the case. I would love a 732 Weird Film Canon. B)

I'm not aware of any plans to update either of those lists.

The Canadian list is updated approximately every 10 years (1984, 1993, 2004, 2015).

It was a separate poll from the main S&S poll. Whether it gets repolled in 2024 is anyone's guess. There's no indication that I know of either way.

TimeOut's 100 Best French Films gets updated sometimes. I think the Sequels list got updated once and may again. S&S will get updated and a name change in 2022 but obviously not until then.
