Better Portuguese lists?

#1

Post by St. Gloede » May 12th, 2019, 10:58 am

I recently decided to explore Portuguese cinema, which of course includes working on Público's Best Portuguese Films (the official list on iCM). However, this list is based on the opinions of only 10 people, and the question was not even about what the best Portuguese films were; to quote the description:
10 important Portuguese personalities chose their top 10 Portuguese films to be shown in schools. Among them were directors, poets, writers, a philosopher, an art curator, an architect and a film critic. The lists were published by the newspaper Público in April 2012.
Exploring iCM there is not a lot of competition, the only other notable list being this chronological overview compiled by a historian: https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/best ... adatriste/

Are there perhaps some intruiging lists iCM is missing? Strange for such a prominent film country to not have had any proper critics polls, or similar.

I've been searching for quite some time, and found absolutely none. Not even from Bénard da Costa, Portugal's greatest critic, who was quite fond of list-making. I'll keep searching through his writings, but from other sources there is almost nothing.

I found this one, though, from TimeOut Lisbon, and decided to add it: https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/time ... pgonzalez/
It was published last year, and it seems to focus a lot in the past few decades. The quality isn't great, but it probably beats Público (then again, what doesn't?)

Maybe you can write in to all local film magazines and pester them until they get their act together? ;)

In all seriousness, thank you for the hard work, and good find, had not expected anyone to dive this deep,

I've been searching for a good one at least since iCM decided to allow non-premium users to publish more than one list. I had actually thought about contacting the Portuguese Cinemathèque about this, and since it seems I'm not the only one interested I might just go ahead and do that :)
