Here is an idea to promote world cinema

Start to explore the following filmographies and you're guaranteed to have watched the very best of film art.

The punchline at the end made me giggle, I have to admit. What about Arne Skouen for Norway?
That's all, folks!

Joachim Trier's an auteur. Doesn't seem much championed by the Norwegian film mafia though, not enough time-lapse photography probably.

Neither are auteurs in the slightest. Just because someone made a somewhat acclaimed film doesn't mean they're auteurs. The complete guide to auteurs is listed above.

Yeah, that's the point where I started smirking. Turned into fullblown bursts of laughter once I hit the China/Japan sections.

Ah, it's not just complete guide, definitive and complete guide. Don't see how any of the non-listed Asian directors could have as much of a handwriting on their movies as those 170+ Michael Curtiz movies.

I just try to imagine the reaction if some renowned critic came to post a list called the definitive and complete guide of autors without obviously being ironic.

Isn't this list the top 250 directors according to TSPDT listed by country?

Also could you define auteur? I feel like it's one of those terms that have a different definition depending on the person you ask.

The legend is back! This has to be some sort of joke though right? What is the definition of auteur?
A. “Director who is highly acclaimed according to critic aggregator websites”
B. “Director who exerts an authorial influence on the films they work on”
The answer is... B!
A director’s designation as an “auteur” has no correlation with the quality of their oeuvre.

Btw, for reference:
Hou Hsiao-hsien <- in Chinese, surname comes before first name, so Hou is his family name.
King Hu <- this is an English name, so the order goes given name then surname.

I don't really think this is a website where world film needs promoting. I mean it's kind of like selling ice to the eskimoes. Everyone here already watches world cinema. Also I don't think this is the right perspective to start with. Find films that you're interested in because of the subject matter works better for me.

In this anti-intellectual landscape and anti-auteuristic age, with social media destroying and looking down on intellectualism and academic science (and the silly and overly anti-elitistic notion that every opinion is as important), it's very much needed. Film as an art form is in danger (just look what happened to cahiers du cinema recently) and this topic is an attempt to champion film as an art form by listing all the auteurs in the world.

Thanks for the correction, fori.

I agree that not all opinions are equal, and that we live in anti-intellectual times. But writing a list of directors everyone here knows about doesn't seem to address that.
