I don't think mathiasa was talking about the shorts on TSPDT or S&S. You can't use the same argument every time.

Of the 1817 official shorts on iCM, only 24 are on TSPDT. 11 of those 24 are also on our forum's favourite movies. Those 24 shorts are not there because of historical significance. The 1817 official shorts come from a lot of different lists, but there are a few lists that have a lot more shorts than other lists. The lists with a lot of shorts are not canon lists, but they indeed include shorts for historical significance in some cases. I really fail to see the connection with canon/TSPDT/S&S in this.
Probably because I'm looking at the 3+ list right now and because these lists are so connected that if a short appears on one, it is likely to appear on others too. Also don't forget we have 2000 TSPDT films now.

I've mostly seen technical experiments that are hopelessly outdated by modern standards, some documentaries with a POINT to make and lots of animation that is doing its very best to be as unanimated as possible. The few narrative shorts I've seen are mostly silents. I'm sure there's a vast reservoir on ICM containing modern genre and/or experimental shorts I haven't tapped into yet, as I've been complaining that I find it a difficult area to navigate, please do point me in the right direction.

I checked the handy ICM list. A massive 60 shorts from the 21th century (that's 3.2% if I'm generous). 10 of which are from the past decade.

I wasn't looking for specific titles, just something contemporary. I've seen almost half of those 60 btw, clicked on a few of the remaining ones and hit a lot of Rosenbaum checks. The epitome of contemporary cinema!

I've seen 1,557 official shorts from the "All Shorts" list, plus about 4,000 unofficial shorts. I find unofficial shorts to watch in many ways. Originally, I looked up a lot of pet directors' credits to see if they made shorts too. Then I gradually accumulated 20 or so shorts-heavy ICM lists that I draw ideas from. Also, I try to see every unofficlal short on 13+ lists (I currently have 55 left). Lately, I've been watching a load of experimental shorts streamable at lightcone.org -- that's a new pursuit for me.

I have about 70 extra-coveted shorts left on my watchlist, but most of them are near-impossible to find so they just sit there. I rarely add to this list anymore, but I did insert two early Vera Chytilova shorts the other day.

Let's see...what were the inspirations for recent shorts I've watched? This goes back about three weeks.

lightcone.org: about 60 films
shorts that were on 13+ ICM lists: 11
the Chaotic Cinema list on Letterboxd: 10
official checks: 8 (a lot of fresh discoveries lately...I still have two more to watch)
DTC nominations: 3 (Qortsili was terrible)
shorts I came across while skimming someone else's checks: 2
the Parker Tyler's Underground Film list: 1
something I came across on a director's Vimeo channel while looking for something else: 1
something I came across on https://uloz.to: 1
something I came across on YouTube: 1

I don't see many contemporary shorts that mean anything to me. They tend to be little character studies, cutesy novelties or self-important "issue" films -- not so much about filmmaking concepts.

I'm now down five slots since the box-office lists were radically expanded.

Shorts are your friend

#500 on this list is only 6 minutes long, so, you could get to under 4000 in less than a couple days, if you really wanted to.

As a point of reference, watching 500 off that list, will put you around 2500, a vast majority of the real short ones are available on Youtube.
Thanks! that 'll be a big help :)
I ended 2016 ranked #8366, and ended 2017 ranked #1701, thanks in very large part to that list.
Well, i've come a long way since january. I've watched a lot of shorts since then. Now on rank #1985
Excellent rank/year btw :D

Didn't know i was born in the same year as Ronaldo and Bruno Mars. Don't know the others though :)

87 ranks since the beginning of the year. Expanding the box-office lists did its best to wreck my ranking, but it was no match to my TSPDT project, and watching shorts during coffee breaks while working remotely because of the pandemic. :cowbow:

It did a swell job on me...I'm five slots below where I was and am about 25 checks behind the person directly above me.

I'm waiting for things to open up again, because despite having 730/1000 checks, 15 of the bottom 17 are unchecked. Will make progress just as they fall off to new films.
