Akira (I've given up on sitting through this)
Raise the Red Lantern
The Philadelphia Story
Rio Bravo (I have this DVR'ed, so I'll see this soon-ish unless I can't bear to finish it)
Great Expectations
The Adventures of Robin Hood (unchecked, though it's possible I saw it as a kiddie)
Heat
The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp
Shoah
(tie) The Big Heat, In the Heat of the Night

I saw Stagecoach about a month ago, so that no longer ranks.

PS I just realized that three of these films are "Heat" movies. Weird!!

So now my top 10 is....

Akira
The Philadelphia Story

The Adventures of Robin Hood (?)
Heat
The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp
Shoah
The Big Heat
(big tie) Farewell My Concubine, In a Lonely Place, Make Way for Tomorrow, A Man for All Seasons, A Quiet Man

I’d say top 17 is high - once you’ve got there, you’re really in the big leagues. Now that I’ve made it to this prestigious circle I won’t let anyone talk to me without shining my shoes first - unless of course they are a fellow elite.

In all seriousness I don’t think it matters. In the context I was using high ranking to refer to users with approximately equal or higher official check count to me, as given my only 5 or more officials unchecked movie is newly minted Bohemian Rhapsody (which looks rather unappealing to me), I expect other users on the top page to have also seen all movies in such large numbers of official lists.

Anything top 1000 is probably a little unhealthy.

1. Idi i smotri (1985) - 22 lists [I'm curious to see how long I can go without viewing this one, considering the number of top lists it's on]
2. L'année dernière à Marienbad (1961) - 21 lists
3. Napoléon vu par Abel Gance (1927) - 18 lists [hoping to see it in a proper screening someday]
4. Le samouraï (1967) - 18 lists[Nearly saw this one a week ago to fulfill my personal film goal for 2018, but the IMDb list changed and it no longer became necessary]
5. Yi yi (2000) - 18 lists [Will very likely see this by the end of the year due to my personal film goals for 2019]
6. L'armée des ombres (1969) - 17 lists [Two Melville titles on this list? Not sure why he's so neglected, I certainly have nothing against him]
7. Shoah (1985) - 17 lists
8. Ai no korîda (1976) - 16 lists
9. Pierrot le fou (1965) - 16 lists
10. The Servant (1963) - 15 lists [I may actually have seen this one about twenty-five years ago, but I'll have to watch it again to be sure]

I'm pleased I still have a decent number of highly acclaimed films to look forward to even after all these years. I actively avoid them while working on my personal film goals to preserve them as long as possible.

Hear, hear! Well, I was down to 195 last I looked - from a high of 110. Will get below 200 soon.

Just revisited my unchecked movies and found a lot on 8+ lists that I've tried and didn't get through -

Oldeuboi (twice)
Saving Private Ryan
Rosemary's baby (tried, but hated the book and the movie is no improvement)
Reservoir dogs
Amores perros
Dead ringers
What ever happened to baby Jane?
I am a fugitive from a chain gang - too tense for my mood at the time, might give it another shot
Blue is the warmest color
Black swan (2010)
Hedwig and the angry inch
Jagten - at least 3 attempts, too painful
Limite (several attempts, just couldn't get into it)

As noted elsewhere, I've reached the point where I rarely venture out of my comfort zone where movies are concerned. I no longer watch movies because I "should." Prefer to revisit old friends. I'm game to try things if they're streaming but feel free to turn them off, or watch them in increments.

I think I was at rank 52 or 54 years ago, depression and being busy really destroyed that. It sucks being out of the top 100 but it’s not really that important so meh.

Looking at the different lists posted i saw Howard's End twice... Remembered really liking it... even saw it 2 or 3 times.

And for Leopardi : L'armée des Ombres is an Very imprissive Film : if you find the right Moment i hope you'll really apreciate it !

Ladri di Biciclette (34)
Rashômon (33)
Shichinin no Samurai (32)
Schindler's List (31)
Raging Bull (30)
Chinatown (28)
La Grande Illusion (28)
Bonnie and Clyde (27)
Faa yeung nin wa (27)
La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc (27)

I'll see Rashômon on the big screen next week. Ideally, I'd wait to see most of these in similar conditions, but this year I'll make an effort to see some of them on DVD. I believe only two of these titles have changed over the last four years.

So now my top 10 is....

Akira
The Philadelphia Story
Raise the Red Lantern
Great Expectations
The Adventures of Robin Hood (?)
Heat
The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp
Shoah
The Big Heat
(big tie) Farewell My Concubine, In a Lonely Place, Make Way for Tomorrow, A Man for All Seasons, A Quiet Man
And down goes The Philadelphia Story (bleh...old-time Hollywood romances really exasperate me). And A Man for All Seasons and Farewell My Concubine are on less lists now.

This leaves a top 11:

Akira
Raise the Red Lantern
Great Expectations
The Adventures of Robin Hood
Heat
The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp
Shoah
The Big Heat
(tie) In a Lonely Place, Make Way for Tomorrow, A Quiet Man

I just can't imagine why Heat is on so many lists. Doesn't sound like anything I'd ever want to watch.

Why are you having trouble sitting through Akira? It's astounding craftsmanship and spectacle just gets better for me with each viewing.

Maybe you answered your own question...it seemed to me like mere "spectacle" more than anything else. Just sensation and noise.

Couldn’t the same argument be raised against something like enter the void? I disagree in both cases, and I think there are plenty of acclaimed films that have less narrative substance than Akira, not to mention that spectacle alone can carry my attention and interest pretty far.

11
Pretty Woman (1990) - Not interested

10
Babettes gæstebud (1987) - Been meaning to see it for a long time.
Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India (2001) - Not interested
Pelle erobreren (1987) - Seems like I haven't given '87 it's fair shake, this is also on my watchlist

9
La meglio gioventù (2003) - Low priority, but may watch it eventually (not heard much good to be honest)
Ruan Lingyu (1991) - Really interested, been on my extended watchlist for a while, but has moved up

8
As Good as It Gets (1997) - Not really interested, but may see it (caught parts)
Cyrano de Bergerac (1990) - Never hear anything about this one, not interested
Lan feng zheng / The Blue Kite (1993) - Like Center Stage above this has risen as a priority watch
The Message (1976) - Low priority
The Music Box (1932) - Low priority
Sherman's March (1985) - Moderately interested, will get to it eventually
Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion (1997) - Would be strange seeing this without seeing the series first, and the series is far from being a peiority (if anything my interest has decreased)
Show Boat (1936) - Not too interested
Once Upon a Time in China (1991) - Not too interested

Out of the 15 films above I am only particularly interested in 4, will likely see 2-3 of them this year.

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!
