After that there's just Waiting for Happiness (2002) and Minamata (1971) I have to watch that are on 7 top lists.
Not uncommon that long checks were the ones that people were missing. Tih Minh was one of the films I used in my initial search for people... so I didn't dive deeper into your history. Lot of Empire missing from people's check lists. But I feel you, having just recently finished Tih Minh and having previously watched Heimet, Berlin Alexanderplatz, Satantango, etc.

This got me wondering, so I checked the ICM front page to see how many checks remained on each of 10+, 7+ and 5+ lists for each user (maybe someone has done this on another thread? I feel like I've seen something like this before somewhere...):

It really stands out how far out of step with the others I am - with the exception of Laydback, my numbers are more than double everyone else's (triple for 10+), and I think I've watched 20-25 films on 5+ lists in the last two months (to meet my film goal for 2020, otherwise I'd be very reluctant to attack these so aggressively) so my number in the rightmost column has fallen noticeably of late. I guess I'm in the minority in trying to preserve these acclaimed films for as long as possible? It makes me curious how far down the list I'd have to go before finding someone with comparable numbers (no time for that today, unfortunately).

I'm at 21 with 10+, 115 with 7+ - not gonna bother going to the 5+. And my rank is currently 77. I don't exactly save the acclaimed films, but I do sometimes wait and slot them into challenges or yearly polls - I will likely watch one of my 10+ films before the 1974 yearly poll for example. And I don't, like many people here, focus on films according to lists because, well, I don't want to watch too many shitty films*. And while the great majority of films on 10 or more lists are films that interest me or have historical importance, etc, by the time you get down to 7 lists or lower you end up with lots of films whose "reputations" depend mostly on IMDb lists, box office, or AFI, none of which I consider of much value at all. So there are quite a few films that look pretty crappy to me that are on 4 or 6 or even 8 lists, and I'm not going to rush to see these.

Pretty sure Armoreska has lots of many-list films yet to see and he's ranked a bit above me. I'm sure there are others as well, probably quite a few within the top 100 with attitudes similar to mine or to yours, or other reasons for not trying all that hard to conquer some of these Everests.

*Well, I do watch lots of shitty action or SF/fantasy films, but very few of them are on more than 1-2 lists, if any. And they're mostly more fun to me than fucking MCU or Ron Howard films that might be on 6 or 10 lists.

My numbers aren't quite comparable to yours, but I have deliberately reserved some major films for special occasions, which is why I haven't watched (among the prime examples) Napoleon, Jalsaghar, Berlin Alexanderplatz, Parasite or Roma (though I will probably break down and watch one of the last two at some point this year). I find plenty of treasures among films on few (or zero) lists, but I like the idea that I'll have big "milestone" films left to enjoy as first-time viewings, even when I'm decades older than I am now. (I think we discussed something similar like this with books once -- it's the reason I have deliberately put off Our Mututal Friend and Martin Chuzzlewit for about 25 years, despite devouring the rest of Dickens' novels, many repeatedly...it's always such a lovely thought to have a near-certain delight ahead of me.)

Interesting. Where do you think you make up that deficit to achieve such a high ranking? If I compare our profiles, I note you really slaughter me on top box-office, noir, Hong Kong and horror films....

OldAle: Yeah, I wonder if I participated in more challenges I might knock some of those 10+ films off. But realistically I just like going for the titles on one or two (or no) lists best, that fear of 'running out of (potentially) great films' always sits there in the back of my head, so probably not. There's something about going out of my way to watch these lauded films that repels me, but if TCM aired ten of them in a row, or if a local theatre did the same, I wouldn't think twice about watching them, since it feels more 'natural' to me. Just a hang-up of mine, I guess.

Burney: Yep, I think we have had that discussion before about books. I'm too lazy to go hunt it down, but what would a top ten list look like for you? Mine probably looks very similar to the most anticipated books list on the Goodreads forum from years back, to which I might add Journey to the End of the Night and possibly The Book of Disquiet (both thanks to forum members!). Six years later and I haven't touched any on my list!

Ebbywebby: I think it's the horror films most of all, it led to more than 200 new official checks when it was adopted, but it's true that the noir list has helped out a lot, too. I haven't actively worked on this list (beyond participating in the noir challenge a few years back), but I do enjoy the genre and did notice that I had a high rank on the list right from the get-go. Together these two lists probably were most helpful to push me onto page 1. If we ever adopted a substantial pre-code or worst film list I think they'd benefit me a fair bit, too.
Armo:  Holy smokes, those are some incredible numbers! I applaud you in your cinematic restraint. i don't know how you do it!

Yeah for the last 2+ years I've only focused on movies 3+ lists. It "pains" me to watch one not on 3+ lists. But lately (last ~3 months) I've focused on it less while doing challenges.

I still plan on finishing 3+ this month.

Been a bit since I updated this.

8 lists:
Daughters of the Dust
The 3 Penny Opera
The Insect Woman
Everybody's Woman
Theorum
Tih Minh

30 films on 7 lists.

Been doing random cleanup to get Plats back that I lost over the past 18 months. Just about finished there. Then need to finish up the Nipple List (5 left). I want to Plat the AV Club 2010s list, which will take a bit (30 films to go). Also want to get Box Office list into top500. But after all that, or interspersed, I'll probably work on 8s and 7s. I'm pretty surprised it's only this many... and none on 9+.
Finished all the 8s and 7s. Also finished the Nipple list, AV 2010s, and got box office to 500. Not sure what to work on now.

Been a while, but I finally have some time to make on effort on this list again.

I've only seen Colonel Blimp and In a Lonely Place since writing the above. So now it's....

Heat 1995 (20 lists...I just can't imagine what could be so superb about this)
Raise the Red Lantern (19 lists)
Akira 1988 (18 lists)

I've freshly seen a decent number of films on 10+ lists, though. I pay attention to unseen films on 10+ lists much more than the "top 10." During 2020, I've already seen Perfect Blue (10 lists), How Green Was My Valley (10 lists), In a Lonely Place (17 lists), Night and the City (11 lists), Meet Me in St. Louis (14 lists), Red Sorghum (10 lists), Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring (10 lists), A Room with a View (11 lists), The Long Good Friday (10 lists), To Have and Have Not (14 lists), both parts of the Olympia documentary (14 lists apiece), The Ox-Bow Incident (13 lists), Paris Is Burning (10 lists), Odd Man Out (12 lists), Happy Together (11 lists), Dah (11 lists), A Nos Amours (10 lists), Where Is the Friend's House? I've made some significant progress since my last update. Here is my new top 10:

1. Napoleon vu par Abel Gance - 22
2. Greed - 20
3. Ivan the Terrrible, Part I - 19
4. Le Samourai - 19

8. Nights of Cabiria - 18

Napoleon might sit at the top of this list for a while. The dream is to see this in theaters, but I have no idea when that might be feasible. I'm in no rush to see it on the small screen though. As for the rest of the top 10 I have plans to watch Ivan the Terrible, Le Samourai, Great Expectations, and Au Hasard Bathazar in the very near future, so I should be able to continue to make progress here.

May Challenge: Image
But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

Heh, that's by far my LEAST favorite of your list, I think (without looking) I have it rated 5/10 - though to be fair I barely remember it, 20+ years since seeing, etc. Everything else I have at an 8 or better.

Don't judge me too harshly, I only became a serious cinephile in 2019. Next year, I'm going to give the TSPDT list my best shot. I'm seeing Singin' in the Rain and Double Indemnity this month, as well as knocking out Raging Bull in time for the 1980s poll.

01. Lawrence of Arabia (39)
02. Casablanca (36)
03. Singin' in the Rain (35)
04. Seven Samurai (34)
05. Some Like It Hot (34)
06. Double Indemnity (33)
07. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (33)
08. The General (32)
09. Schindler's List (32)
10. Raging Bull (31)

I knocked out La Strada (good), Great Expectations (decent), and Au Hasard Balthazar (didn't care for it) since the last update. Here is my new top 10, with everything else on 16 or fewer lists:

1. Napoleon vu par Abel Gance - 22
2. Greed - 20
3. Ivan the Terrible, Part I - 19
4. Le Samourai - 19

6. Nights of Cabiria - 18
7. Rocco and His Brothers - 18
8. Orpheus - 17
9. Triumph of the Will - 17
10. Vampyr - 17
