They're all films I'll watch soon, especially Magnolia, been meaning to watch that for ages. Not sure about Napoleon though, it's showing at a few cinemas so I might try to get to one to see it if it's not to far. Don't really want to watch a 5 hour epic at home. I wanted to go see it in London this month, with the orchestra, but I couldn't make it.

It's a watchable film and easy to split into several sittings so it shouldn't be too onerous to watch at home, though cinema+orchestra obv the ideal way! (if only you'd been around a few years ago when we did the forum trip to see it ^_^ )

Been meaning to replace my broken projector, so I might give it a try when i get the new one. Should be better on the wall sized screen.

If you can borrow a couple of extra projectors and blu-ray players, you can play the ending triptych in its full glorious 4:1 aspect ratio (and not letterboxed). The BFI apparently included a triptych bit on all three discs on the new set so with the right equipment you can set it up properly! :woot:

I like old movies. I also have no problem with slower-paced movies.

No, the real problem for me is that most classic European and Asian movie DVDs cost twice as much as the American blockbusters here in Brazil, and also you usually can't find them on Netflix Brazil.

I have to resort to searching used DVD stores or looking for art movie festivals. Also, boxed sets are a good option, but the Yasujiro Ozu collection that has Tokyo Story is a few years old, and I can't find it anywhere.

Interesting suggestion, I'll look into it.

I had the impression that most Brazilian libraries didn't have movies. I looked into some websites and it seems that, at least the biggest libraries here in São Paulo do have DVD movies.

Hehe it would seem like it! But I have seen Dr Mabuse: The Gambler, Metropolis, The Big Parade and Orphans of the Storm (all over 140 mins).

I definitely want to get the new bluray release of Napoleon.

If it helps any, the movie doesn't really "feel" long, because it's more like a series of vignettes or quasi-short stories than just one long story (though the vignettes also form a kind of unique story).

Birth of a Nation is a work of sheer genius a masterpiece despite also having appalling racism, it has to be seen to be believed, amazed by its audacity and genius and shocked later by its racism. An incredible experience though. Andthe battle scenes are as if you are there At the Civil War itself.

Official lists:

- The Red Shoes
- Tokyo Monogatari
- Fanny och Alexander
- Los Olvidados
- Roma Cittá Aperta

Basically, no progress since I last posted in this thread in November. I kind of look forward to all of these, particularly Roma Cittá Aperta, because I watched Paisá from the same director and really loved it.

Personal lists:

- Tokyo Monogatari
- Stalker
- Eraserhead
- Låt den rätte komma in
- Fanny och Alexander

Since last time, I finally got around to watching Shaun of the Dead (very fun movie), and I REALLY look forward to Stalker, Eraserhead and Lat den ratte komma in.

Accounting for the categories SiH13 used:

Favorited
- (500) Days of Summer
- Gran Torino
- American Psycho
- Hauru no ugoku shiro
- Beauty and the Beast

I have both (500) Days of Summer and American Psycho on my watchlist in Netflix. If only the day had more hours in it...

Dislikes
- Batman & Robin
- Star Wars: The Phantom Menace
- The Last Airbender
- Click
- Pearl Harbor

I will probably watch The Phantom Menace someday. I'm not really looking forward to any of the others, though Click at least has an interesting concept.

Checks:

- Beauty and the Beast
- Aladdin
- Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
- Bruce Almighty
- A Bug's Life

I have the last two on Netflix and will eventually watch them. Yeah, it seems like I'm the only one on ICheckMovies that haven't watched Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin. But I will, I promise.

Some terrible but lots of great films there, the ones on most official lists are the most worthwhile and Indiana Jones for fun. Stagecoach and His Girl Friday also essential viewing.

Now and then I check to see how many "10+ official lists" films I haven't seen, but the tally seems to depend more on list fluctuations than me actually checking something off. I did recently see My Darling Clementine (solid, but not my sort of thing at all), which was among my top five unseen. I also saw 10-listers The Sorrow & the Pity, I Am Cuba, Zootopia, Distant Voices Still Lives, Ossessione, I Was Born But…, A Separation (definitely my favorite of these), Paisan, A Taste of Cherry, Doctor Zhivago and Grave of the Fireflies within the past 12 months.

My top unseen six right now (sorted by official lists) are Akira (I bailed out of this once, but perhaps I'll try it again sometime), Stagecoach, Brief Encounter, Great Expectations (1946), Johnny Guitar and The Thing (I possibly saw this decades ago but am not sure). Am I a David Lean naysayer? Dunno.

A fair number of changes from last year, with In the Mood For Love, Aladdin, Mulan, Pocahontas and The Wolf of Wall Street watched. Despite three animated films taken care of, there still seem to be a lot of them around!

Decided to finally work a bit on this. Watched A touch of Zen two days ago - which was the number one. Pretty big disappointment. Enjoyed it even less than Dragon Inn (which was decent) - this was largely very poor, with terrible acting and a laughably incoherent and silly plot. I had a very hard time separating it from other shitty Kung Fu movies in my head. Was expecting stronger visuals at the very least. The saving graces were the special effects (which can't really elevate it too much) and a pretty reasonably good climax.

Current top 5:

Mary Poppins, in 13 top lists
Sholay, in 13 top lists
Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India, in 12 top lists
Babettes gæstebud, in 11 top lists
La belle noiseuse, in 11 top lists

Considering watching Mary Poppins today.
