Me realizing that Rocker is was on the 1001-2000 list .. barely above 50 checks. German old-school cult film, and not even in all parts of Germany. Weird inclusion for an acclaimed ICM list. Well, auf Wiedersehen, then!

As Holy Motors was my favorite film of the 2010's, I love seeing the 334 place jump it made. Same with the jumps for some of the films of Malick, Haneke, and Von Trier, who often aren't treated so well on this board. Just saw My Friend Ivan Lapshin, and am thrilled by the jump of 177 places it got, too. My second favorite from the 2010's, Once Upon A Time in Anatolia， also jumped 168 spots, so that also tickles my fancy. Last but not least, I am thrilled to see The Return crack back into the top 1000, along with Bergman’s Summer with Monika.

On the flip side, Mad Max: Fury Road jumped all the way up to #351, and I thought that was a pretty bad film, though it makes for a very good "game demo."

That is somewhat surprising. It actually got a local release here, one of the first films to benefit from the early Asian boom around the turn of the century.
Opening scene has definitely somewhat of a cult status, especially among people who share the affinity of Hou's muse

Yes, I believe it is the biggest I'm yet to see from him. Caught 8 Hous so far, and I have rated everything between 5-7 (i.e. mediocre - to very good - but no great films) - so generally little interest in exploring more. He is likely the most respected filmmaker I have never loved a film by. Of course, that could always change with Mambo.

I'd say chances are slim, but not impossible. It is his most contemporary film, sporting young/urban characters (a bit like the final segment in Three Times, but better). It even has a (somewhat) electronic soundtrack! Apart from that, Hou's style is very similar to his other films. Long shots, quiet characters, slight genre influences. We'll see

Cold/unimpressed was exactly how I’d describe my reaction to Mambo, visually a little interesting but remember disliking something about the relationships. I really liked The Time to Live and the Time to Die and was meh on Goodbye, South, Goodbye.

On paper Hou is quite perfect for me, but I find something lacking in his style. I don't feel engaged with his camera work, it often feel too far away and too distant (I often feel the same about (Theo Angelopoulos). I think the general issue is that he is not cold/clinical enough for my sensibilities to draw me into his soft minimalism - and that I don't share his preference for nostalgia. Mambo being set in the present might give it an edge here - though other non-nostalgic Hou films, like The Assassin, just felt solid, but flat - not giving me much to grab onto viscerally. I suppose that to appeal to me you either need to go more Brechtian and/or cold/clinical or go in the opposite direction, with more life, colour, etc. and Hou's sensibilities just tend to fall in an area that does not overlap all too well with my own.

Ugh man, if even you say that. I was really getting my hopes up after having watched City of Sadness last fall - which I thought was quite good (previously Time to Live was a minor disappointment). I think Millenium Mambo looks great though.

Yeah, that's my issue too. It should be gone next year though, and as long as those voters don't vote for it again in 2022 it'll stay gone.

I guess The Clock is more in Line describing a cone territory.

Exactly. There's a big difference. Clock may be practically inaccesssible, but Eniaios has never even existed yet as a complete film, and won't be for many years.
