Heh, why that specific number? Is that how many new entries there were in last year's update?
Angel generally has inside info on what's coming up.
Innnnnteresting! I was not aware of Angel's insider status. Cool beans. B)

Seen 21 out of the 59 new entries.
Don't know which one fell off the list, but I'm pretty sure I'll lose 15-20 checks.

Wow, I really like the high initial placement for Leave No Trace. Cool to see Eighth Grade in a respectable spot as well.

Surprised that Step Brothers and Stuck on You aren't a part of the "drop-offs". Still don't know how the hell they got on there anyway, lol.

Bill does not explain on the website.
However, here is what he write aboute TV series :

For those that disagree with the inclusion of made-for-television content in the 21st Century's Most Acclaimed Films listing, listed below are the eight titles that would be included to replace Li'l Quinquin, The Century of the Self, The Power of Nightmares: The Rise of the Politics of Fear, The Wire, When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts, O.J.: Made in America, The Handmaid's Tale (Season 1), and Twin Peaks: The Return-:

Everlasting Moments (Jan Troell, 2008)
Enemy (Denis Villeneuve, 2013)
Wild Tales (Damian Szifrón, 2014)
Damsels in Distress (Whit Stillman, 2011)
Red Cliff (John Woo, 2008)

Missing one or two movies I thought should make it.

Gaining around 15 movies, so this will actually reward me with the bronze award.

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

Surprised (and disappointed) that 24 Frames didn't make the cut.
Surprised (and pleased) that Bohemian Crapsody also didn't make it.

30 of the new films seen, 15 dropoffs seen, net +15.

Worrisome trend of more megabudget American action flicks making the grade, even if they are near the bottom and may not last.

Very surprising results.
I thought that First Reformed and The Favorite would be in the top 250. Now only 2 films in the top 250 (Roma and Burning) are released in 2018.
It seems that it becomes really hard for new films to get a high ranking nowadays.
Or is it because Bill expects that films after 2010 will get a boost in the next edition due to end-of-decade lists?

It's the same problem that the main TSPDT list has. More recent films get overwhelmed by older films continuing to appear on lists. There's some weighting going on based on year-of-release to try and get a fair distribution of films, but it means that newer films get a lower position on the list.

In theory the films from after 2010 will get a boost from decade-end lists, and then a further boost when Sight & Sound does their next All-time-greatest survey in 2022, but the basic problem will still remain: if the films are ranked by a counting system, it is not possible to rank them consistently and have a fair distribution over time.

Edit: Oh, you mean those additional ones that were posted? I would be OK with that for The Wire, Handmaid's tale, and Twin Peaks return, the others are films. Would like to hear other's thoughts before going that route though.

In principle I don't like movie list with Tv series, but at the same time I feel resistance is futile, we're in an era of TV Series and it's likely we are going to see tv series in movie list in increasing numbers in the following years.

+1 for switching out those 3. Watching a TV-series are completely different from watching a movie, so it's like mixing apples and oranges.
Would only add 2 then? So the list becomes an even 1000?

I'd add 3 to replace three, I don't think I said two anywhere? I did think it before I remembered about Twin Peaks, but I don't think I posted that unless you're reading my mind on a time delay?

Marwencol and The Killing of a Sacred Deer turning unofficial. :(

Overall, it looks like I'm gaining six checks but losing 11. On the other hand, some films that reeeeeally disappointed me are turning unofficial, like The Future, Knight of Cups, Hail Caesar and Damsels in Distress. So I suppose I should cheer this.

945. The Handmaid's Tale (Season 1) [TV] (2017)
Only Season 1? How are you gonna handle that, guys?
Seasons should exist as discrete units on IMDB, I can't understand why they don't. Then they'd be individually rate-able on IMDB and check-able on ICM. Especially with the recent rise of anthology series like Fargo, American Crime Story, True Detective, etc.

Series shouldn't be on IMDb. Hence the M.

Seasons are individually rate-able on TMDB and TVDB and sites powered by those. And I agree with you, which is why I like those sites.

And yeah - Handmaid's Tale S1 is based on the book and is fantastic. It should have been a miniseries, but Hulu got greedy.

Movie, short for 'moving picture', doesn't specify format :P

I agree, and I think they will at some point. I remember when did that for TV episodes and they said it wasn't easy to do because they had to change their whole data system or something like that. So maybe its a technical problem to overcome that takes time.

I agree with adding films to replace TV series in the 21st Century list with a note in the description that this is a modified version of the list.

I'm really surprised that Embrace of the Serpent has already dropped off. I've always envisioned it growing in status to being regarded as one of the best films of the decade....hmm, maybe it will be a slow-burner.

It's #2 on my decade list, and it probably should be #1.

So what are the options we're discussing here? Bill offered eight titles to replace all the made-for-TV titles. Why are we discussing replacing three? Either replace them all to have movies exclusively or don't replace them at all. I think it's a bit weird to make our own alternate adjustment to the adjustment Bill is offering.

The others are mini series and I'm pretty sure they all had theatrical releases. The three I mentioned are entire series, or seasons thereof. Some people disagree with all TV content, many/most only disagree with it if its length and scope makes it clearly not a movie. Others don't disagree with any of it. Bill included all so people could choose, I don't think he was making a judgement that if you exlude it must be all 8. The other 5 are much more similar to the other movies on the list than the three full out TV series.

For now I'm inclined to keep it as is, but my personal preference would be to remove those 3. I would not be ok with removing all 8.

For now I'll put the whole show, same thing we did with 24 on the Cahiers list.
Can't we just put the films instead of the TV series? They were stated for a reason.
What films?
Edit: Oh, you mean those additional ones that were posted? I would be OK with that for The Wire, Handmaid's tale, and Twin Peaks return, the others are films. Would like to hear other's thoughts before going that route though.
I vote for not replacing. I think we should follow the source.

You can mention the 8 extra films in the list description, so whoever wants to watch them can watch them.
