I too was making an IMDb list: http://www.imdb.com/list/ls071636068

I added the following extra films:
- Miyamoto Musashi (1961-1965) (5 films)
- The Human Condition (1959-61, Masaki Kobayashi) (3 films)
- Battles Without Honor and Humanity (1973-74, Kinji Fukasaku) (4 films)

I wasn't sure about these:
- Chuji tabi nikki (1927, Daisuke Ito) <- 3 films released in that year with that name by that director
- Shinpan Ôoka seidan (1928, Daisuke Ito) <- same as above

edit:
There's also a sequel to Aoi sanmyaku (1949, Tadashi Imai) called Zoku aoi sanmyaku released in the same year. Not sure if those should be counted as one or two films?

If Angel Glez doesn't add the list to iCM then I'm happy to.

Please do!

"Battles Without Honor and Humanity" is a 5-part film series, the second one is missing.

Thanks a lot guys. I will add it on my French site (where it's easer to create new films).

"You and This List
Rated 122 of 299 titles"
> Some of the top 100 of the official list. Some of the Art Theatre Guild list. Not much samurai films. Still plenty films to explore.

Thanks again.

I added both the Chuji tabi nikki and Shinpan Ôoka seidan trilogies since 1) the list doesn't say which films and 2) both of those trilogies are also in Bunshun Bunko's Top 150 Japanese Films and these two lists are very similar.

Ah, ok. Thanks. I'm pretty sure the official Kinema list is missing some films (sequels).

checked 103, exactly 200 to go!

my kinda list :) would have liked some more Shinoda and Yoshida... also would have expected something like https://www.icheckmovies.com/movies/gun ... ku+motoni/ to be on there... but a good candidate for an official Japanese list for sure

Shouldn't both parts of Kinoshita's Yotsuya Kaidan be on the list?

Edit: I have seen 84 as well.

I've seen 70. This list is fucking dope. Now it's time to make this, Dictionary of Films from Jacques Lourcelles and Dizionario dei capolavori del cinema (Dictionary of Cinema Masterpieces) official lists.
My father didn’t have the skill of a professional cameraman. The result? Avant-garde cinema.

I'm just not a huge fan of this list (seen 177). It's quite similar to Bunshun Bunko (seen 108) with 119 same films also with lots of unavailable films. Kinema Junpo Annual top 10s contains 213 films from Tadao Sato's 300. I still prefer KineJun Annual top 10s (seen 305) which IMO has a much better selection of films for each decade not to mention it also contains recent films.

I don't know. I'll leave it up to Angel and themagician to decide.

could attention to the list make these films become available again? it might in some cases I hope

but the list is not perfect indeed, and recent years need also be covered for an official list I feel

If by recent Japanese cinema you mean stuff like the J-Horror movement, Adrift in Tokyo, Confessions and Love Exposure (well, almost everything by Sion Sono) then no thanks.

The Tadao Sato list seems like just the list for me. I like finding out about films that are pretty well regarded in that country yet unknown everywhere else. Plus I'm making older films a higher priority now since 95% of lists out there (especially canon lists) have a focus on the 1960s and later which really sucks.
My father didn’t have the skill of a professional cameraman. The result? Avant-garde cinema.

amongst recent Japanese masterpieces I would count

Aoi Haru (2001) Blue Spring
Avalon (2001)
Eureka (2000)
Jitsuroku Rengô Sekigun: Asama Sansô e no Michi (2007) United Red Army
Petaru Dansu (2013) Pedal Dance
Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi (2001) Spirited Away
Vibrator (2003)
Vital (2004)

If you're thinking about J-horror and Sono you've been hanging around with teenagers too much :)

I actually think that was the problem lol. Sono's Cold Fish was good though, but the teens did say stuff like this about it: I honestly don't understand how one man could make a movie as compassionate, moving, and humanistic as Love Exposure, and then make some as cynical, cruel and hateful as this within two years.

I've added Yotsuya kaidan, Part II.

I've also added Zoku aoi sanmyaku because the understanding I got from KG is that the film (Aoi sanmyaku) was released in two parts and at least recently screened as one film. I haven't seen those films so I'm not sure if that's correct.

edit: Both films were released in 1949 and I'm trying to recall if there were length limits in Japan for films so they had to be released in two parts.

I'll add them. It's really frustrating that adding lists by IMDb list URL doesn't work now.
