These are purely TV-series. The other lists also have a lot of regular TV-series stuff, but at least there are some films in there.

TSZDT has TV miniseries and series elsewhere (particularly in the 1001-2000) like The Stand and Twin Peaks. Besides, I highly doubt any of these will make a dent in getting any of them on the list given that I'm pretty sure the weight on them will be pretty low given they're genre-specific and websites. If anything, they might give Perfect Blue a little bit of a bump.

Mkay, but adding lists simply because they could bump a specific film sounds a bit iffy to me (as much as I like Perfect Blue) :D
Mini-series I get, TV series I'm not too happy about. Finally caved and watching Twin Peaks now, but man I hope this is just a once in a decade exception.

Well, I didn't create them just to bump Perfect Blue. I'm just saying practically that's all they will probably result in. I just think for this kind of list, it's good to have a wide breath of representation.

Plus many of the series in the lists are shorter than many mini-series if you look at a 12-ep. anime series that tells a complete story beginning to end, that's clocking in at about 4.5 hours or so. I mean, I just finished Ken Burn's The Vietnam War which was well over 15 hours long. Plus there are a few anime series that are currently or have been official in the past like Serial Experiments Lain and several that are currently nominated including Haibane Renmei, Boogiepop Phantom, Mononoke and Kaiba. Now if something like an on-going series like Attack on Titan ever ended up on a list, I'd probably take more umbrage with it.

Yea I'm no anime fan, but I love having all these anime/animation lists coming in just coz we didn't have any at all before. I love it when we find all the nichey genre and region lists. A Yugoslavian list got added recently and I was like yaaas. I'm not a big fan of TV in the list either, but it's unlikely many would ever make it into the main list.

Edit: Also, a film must appear in at least one 'all time' list to even be considered, so ya. Most of these lists just help with the lower rankings and adding new stuff to the overall list.

Just noticed there's a TSZDT: The Top 100 Japanese Horror Films on ICM.
The main TSZDT list features 26 Japanese films. Out of the 7,195 nominated films, 316 Japanese films have received at least one vote. This list contains an anthology that shares production countries.
Is it just a lack of Japanese lists of Japanese films listed in Western lists? 316/7195 is not an awful lot, especially for a country that is quite renowned for its horror cinema.

There are about 15 Japanese lists and a few 'Asian' lists, so likely. I don't really know Japanese film numbers to get a good sense of how many films there 'should' be. There are over 4500 from USA alone in the full list of films (full list nearly 7900 now), which is pretty insane. And thanks probably to the anime lists, Japan is up to 425 'films' and it's the country with the third most nominated films (UK is second).

So what kind of lists are we looking for?

https://www.theguardian.com/film/2019/f ... lms-ranked -> do lists like these qualify?

Also interesting to note that the country which comes in third on nominations only has 26/1000 in the final list. I get we are kinda US-centric, a bias which is probably even stronger in the horror scene, but those are weird stats alright :)

That list is already included, so yup. Pretty much anything that isn't a streaming list can qualify.

Is there a country breakdown for TSZDT? I'd imagine it's always a struggle with these types of lists to get more non-English language films into them as an awful lot of lists will be dominated by English-language films. I can imagine a few lists having a token one or two foreign films in them.

I made this the other day but just finished making it pretty for anyone interested: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... sp=sharing

It's every edition of TSZDT so far, with a master list on the first sheet.

Seems like the 2018 update killed a lot of good films! I'd probably rather work on the 1000+ ones, so thanks for the list :D

There's a full list on IMDb, of everything in one list as of last year's edition: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls044339710/

(the one in the google sheet is just everything that has been in the top 1000).

I think the 2018 one is when we redid the program so it wasn't unfairly biased towards the 21st century.

Yeah, a lot of older entries from 2018 on. Killed a lot of interesting foreign films though it seems.
For the full list, I'm "only" at 1983/7194, quite a way to go there! :D

I’ve seen 2851. I’d like to watch all the available ones some day but I don’t think that will ever happen.

I watch quite a lot of horror already, though not exclusively, so I definitely don't see this happening for myself. Especially not with so many classics in the list, which I watch even more sparingly. But it's good to have much that master list. I'm always on the lookout for more nice horror filler and right now the actual TSZDT list is almost at its limit for that.

Any reason why the master list is not on ICM mighty?

What are the films from Iran and Israel? Actually interested generally in the films from countries not exactly known for their horror outputs, but those two in particular (and I don't want to hassle you too much).

Contagion?
Might be Djinn (2013)?

Israel might be The Golem (2018)?

Jeez Israel shows even less total horror films than Iran (24 vs 40), and they don't as far as I know have the kind of extreme restrictions on violence that Iran has (or used to have - 2018's The Pig is actually rather gory). Do Israeli people - or filmmakers - have an aversion to the genre I wonder? But it's not terribly common in the rest of the middle east either it seems - 54 total for Egypt. Turkey is the only country with any number approaching significance - 217. Of course IMDb is probably off somewhat but still - not a region where the genre has prospered is it?

It's not really a region for genre films in general, is it?

Overall perhaps not - apart from comedy which is popular everywhere, and which often doesn't translate. But if you look at the whole history of the region, it's a little oversimplification. Musicals were very popular in Egypt from the 40s to at least the early 60s, and to some extant in Iran; crime or noir had a place in both countries in the 50s and 60s, and all of the four really active national cinemas tried with varying degrees to do what the Italians were doing in the 60s and early 70s - mimic American genre films, especially action/spy stuff. Lots of James Bond/eurospy knockoffs from 1965-75. There's not a HUGE amount of this material, at least not that's widely available, apart from the really schlock Turkish stuff, but some of it's out there, and there are probably more things that aren't listed on IMDb. Problem is none of these countries has had the wherewithal to make large-scale productions that can compete, even at home, with western films. If you live in Jerusalem and can see some low-rent local action movie, or the latest from Hollywood or Japan or wherever, what do you pick? Same problem with smaller and/or poorer countries everywhere I suppose. Iran's a little outside the box because of the restrictions over the last 40 years, which simultaneously disallow most foreign films and require that most Iranian films be made under rigid censorship, which leads to their particular distinctive cinema of award-winning ethics-oriented dramas, mawkish kiddie flicks, and propagandist war films. But I think Israel, Turkey and Egypt just eventually gave up making the western-style genre films for the most part because it wasn't profitable.

Found a list with an update: 80shorror.net's Derek Schweigert's The Top 200 Best Horror Movies of the 1980s (2018)

We have the top 100, which I think is the same, and he added another 100 films.

Added all the new lists in. Up to 2897 lists now. Currently 198 new entries in the top 1000.

I plan to release the new edition on the 15th May, assuming nothing comes up but if it does it'll be up by the end of that weekend.

No. I suspect I'll lose my bronze. I'm more "scared" that some of the cool lesser-known films of the 30s-50s that I've watched over the past couple of years will be replaced by lesser present-day films but... ah, I really don't give a fuck. As long as the numbers of endless sequels to, remakes of, reboots of 80s schlock don't increase I'll be happy enough.

The problem with the interesting horror films of late is that they seem to be dumped on pretty badly, both by critics as well as audiences. A guy like Oz Perkins definitely deserves a spot in the list, but 'm afraid we'll have to wait until he dies in order for him to be rediscovered.

I just hope it's not just the same A24-ish horror that dominates the more recent years.
