They Shoot Zombies, Don't They?

I don't get the surge of 90s horror. I mean, that is generally seen as a pretty bad time for horror cinema (and rightfully so). Apart from some Scream (+clones) in the late 90s, there really wasn't much of note.

Okay, just came up with a good comparison to ponder:

Having Night of the Lepus and Blood Freak in the top 1000 of TSZDT is the equivalent of Bill releasing a new TSPDT list with Plan 9 from Outer Space and Ishtar in the top 1000.

-_-

Sorry, I'll get over this eventually.

Well, just to remind this list isn't an exact replica of TSPDT, it's just modeled after it :P And half of TSPDT is awful so yea. I think Night of the Lepus and Blood Freak have some kind of relevance or importance to horror, even if they're bad. The Pulse remake's inclusion is probably the thing I'm most offended about - and maybe the Friday the 13th remake.

Oh yeah - I noticed that the widely panned Nightmare on Elm Street remake is in the new list too. I haven't seen it, but if it really is a greater horror film than Satan's Little Helper or Scream 4, then colour me intrigued.

On a less sarcastic note, any idea when https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/tszd ... htysparks/ will be updated? I'm hoping to use the updated version to select titles to watch for the Unofficial Challenge this year. :)

I'll update it in the next couple of days. Bit busy at the moment with assessments.

Some of those films feel out of place. As someone who has not watched 27 Dresses, I don't know whether to be confused or concerned.

Oh right, the new weighting system means that films in only 1 list can end up higher than they should; these are filtered out of the main list but after a certain point it stops. I'm going to restrict it to 3+ and re-update it.

I remember that, I think that was discussed pages back in this thread somewhere. Some director picked 27 Dresses as one of his favourite horrors as a joke.

I was wondering whether that joke is the reason behind the 27 Dresses reference from the Deadpool 2 trailer...

Thanks for the quick turnover

While there is the odd borderline horror movie or two, this is generally a very solid collection of high quality horror movies. In the mere top 250 of the 1001-2000 list we have:

Vampire's Kiss 1988
The Reflecting Skin 1990
Poltergeist III 1988
Lik wong 1991
The Beast Must Die 1974
Scream 4 2011
Dead Heat 1988
Satan's Little Helper 2004
Patrick 1978
Phase IV 1974
The Neon Demon 2016
Starry Eyes 2014
Combat Shock 1984
Unfriended 2014
The Visit 2015
Split 2016
Splice 2009
Warm Bodies 2013

Can't wait to watch some more films in the 1001-2000 list that -- with the right support -- might make it into the 2019 update. ^_^

Gonna do subsets of genres and countries throughout the year. I've been interested in this one lately so decided it will be the first. The Top 50 Greatest Horror Films Directed by Women: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls026220647/.

Only 180 films of the 6,652 nominated films were directed, or co-directed, by women. Kinda wish they'd make some more so Twilight will get pushed off lol.

I made a start for such a list, but don't have the time to commit to it alone. Quite hard to find good (long/diverse) lists though.

I called it They Don't Shoot Lasers Don't They.

Just watched Detention - one of the most delightful films I have seen this year - which makes yet another great film kicked out in the latest update. :( Well, I guess we can always rally for it to be picked up by the 366 Weird Movies crew.

Anyone wanna give This a try? The list isn't on iCM at the moment, either.

Hmmmmm.

There was, unfortunately no room among the 1001 films for The Wicker Man (1973) or Neon Demon (2016). But there was room for Amateur Porn Star Killer (2006).

The one review on Amazon UK claims that 100s of the reviews are from another author. Could be a legit reproduction of material but seems dodgy.

I have made the list, but some films need to be added to iCheckMovies and I'm not sure the import movies page is working.

Mighty, have you ever considered Michael Jackson's Thriller for this list or because of the nature of it (videoclip, even though is also considered a shortfilm) you always discarded it? Just curious. :)

Well, nothing in the list is included by me personally, it's compiled completely from 2000+ 'best of horror' lists, so it's up to what other people vote for. The only thing I purposely exclude are video games. Thriller has 7 votes and ranked about 1300, so it's not too far off. I'm sure there's a possibility of it turning up if more lists with short films come up.

Is there a list of all films that have been on some version/year of the list?

I've been going through the 86 titles in the latest revision of the list to get back up to 100% completion. I'm only 30 titles in so far, but most of the new editions are pretty lousy. Of course this is all a matter of opinion, just like how I looked through the Drop-offs and found a lot of good titles. I would expect that each revision would make one of my favorite lists even stronger, but it's like the math was off this time, especially with many new titles appearing so high on the list. (Invisible Ray is #298, Mummy's Hand is #445 and Human Monster is #555.) I’ll give you there may not be 1000 good Horror movies in existence. I’ve only seen 1200 myself, but at least 500 of those are better and more interesting than this recent batch.

It seems like a bunch of popular mediocre new films were replaced by a lot of B-movies from the 'classic' age of horror. Which is my least favourite era for horror so I'm inclined to agree (though I've not seen most of the new entries). There was a huge overhaul to the weighing system this time so it's almost like a reboot of the original list. I haven't worked on the list really at all since the last update, but I'm still going to be tweaking and changing stuff for the next one, which will hopefully be a bit more balanced. It's hard to get the math right.

PS I've seen about 2500 horror films and there's definitely at least 1000 good horror films in existence :whistling:

I'm actually disappointed with the last update we got. 21st century really almost gets no love in any list. It's honestly pretty ridicilous... Even movies like Vertigo made it into such a list. Only 41 movies from this decade in a list of 1000 movies when more horror movies are being made now than before the 70's. I really don't get that. That's why i can't take those lists seriously.

76/1000 and ranked 19923, though planning on changing that esp. during horror challenge.

It's always going to be difficult to balance the different eras of film.

Problem 1: A lot of lists come from people whose knowledge of horror is limited so they exclude older films. Older versions of the list took those at face value, resulting in a lot of recent horror which was poor quality. Now the ranking tries to minimise disagreement between all the lists. The result is that lists that do cover the older films have a bigger effect on the ranking. This effect should decrease with the addition of more decent length ranked lists that do cover both older and newer films.

Problem 2: The individual iCM forum members lists did cover both old and new films and were some of the biggest determiners of ranking, but they are no longer considered, so this years list is being made with less high quality data.

Problem 3: I think there's still a few lists which might be marked as Ranked rather than Unranked, which is affecting ranking. I have added a new feature into the program which can detect this. I know that the following two lists weren't marked as unranked when they should be:
groo-8's Top 200 Horror films Ever (should be unranked, the description on IMDb says the films are in random order)
Horror.com's Vintage 101 (2007) (should be unranked)
And I think PCBreakdown's Top 500 Horror Movies might be unranked as well (I looked at the iCM list and it was a weird order and wasn't clear whether it was ranked or not).
I don't have all the lists though so I can't check this properly.

Another problem I noticed:
#73 on the zombies subset list "the living and the dead" is a psychological horror, not a zombie film.

I also have another batch of around 60 lists:

I don't think I agree on this. A lot of forum members, including myself, submitted a list of favorite movies with a horror-tag on IMDb for the yearly horror-poll. Is that quality data? It's mostly just a filtering of favorites-lists, so I don't think it does justice to the genre. My list was being used long after I submitted mine, so it was fairly outdated. I'm glad it's not being used anymore.

One thing they gave were a lot of unique choices, overlooked by critics and most fans. Not allllll of them, but a lot of stuff that dropped were interesting and worthy titles (not always 'good', but they offered something), and now those films only appear on 1-2 lists, sometimes 0. I think the random members of the forum have better and more varied taste in horror than most of the stuff I find. I was sad to lose the lists, as it really made a huge difference, but at the same time they really didn't need to be there anymore. They were originally used as filler because I just didn't have enough 'proper' lists, but that time has come and gone.

Also, @ChrisReynolds re The Living and The Dead; I'll fix that up soon! Thx!

Must have missed it -- why were user lists dropped? I agree that having them there makes for a stronger overall canon.

It seems like the list was better with the user lists honestly.
