While it's an odd placement, I can actually see Wizard of Oz being considered a horror film. I mean, after all, it's essentially a nightmare.

I don't know whether to take you literally or not, I would kind of hope that a list of "scariest films for kids" wouldn't be included in TSZDT - or if it was, it would be weighted at 0.25 or something quite low.
Yes, this ultimate canonical top 1000 has lists like "11 horror films it’s safe to watch with your kids", ”Ten Kid Friendly Horror Movies” and "30 Halloween Movies for children" as its source.
Why is this bad? They Shoot Pictures Don't They uses lists like "The Telegraph's Top 20 Children's Films", "10 Great Films About Children in Wartime", "10 Great Films Based on Classic Children's Books", etc. as its source. It even has weirder ones like "Five Key Dog Films" and "Top 40 Movies Filmed in Chicago", and I'm certain that TSZDT has a better method of comparing all the lists against each other.

And the Wizard of Oz doesn't just appear in children's horror lists. It appears in lists of best Witch films and on lists of scariest scenes. Plenty of people count the Witch of the West and the flying monkeys among their scariest formative cinema experiences.
I agree, but there's a difference between "best", "top", "great" or "key" films of any kind and "10 movies" or "11 films" that have something in common, and it's the only reason I mentioned these three lists. "200 movies filmed in Chicago" or "79 heartbreaking dog films", that would be weird in TSPDT..

I usually don't include lists that are just 'films with something in common' if the description sounds like that's all it is. There's quite a few lists where I'll start making them and then the first few films are like 'I don't actually like this film but I needed to make this go to 20', and I immediately scrap it.

Anyway, I left this going overnight and it's finally done, a ranked list of all films nominated: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls044339710/

Three gialli lost their official status this month (u) (...four if I count Eyes of Laura Mars (1978) as an American giallo).

La donna del lago (1965) [The Possessed] dropped off DtC
Una lucertola con la pelle di donna (1971) [A Lizard in a Woman's Skin] dropped off TSZDT
La corta notte delle bambole di vetro (1971) [Short Night of Glass Dolls] dropped off TSZDT

I'm fine with the update overall. Some movies I love fell off and some movies I love got added [or added back after falling off the previous year).

A lot of people complain, but thank you mighty for all your work on this. You try to be as unbias as possible and show all your work on making this list. You are just letting the data talk. sometimes we dont like the data, but that doesn't mean we should hide it.

Ah, another fellow gialli-lover... I burned myself out on them several years ago but I aim to make a comeback this year (hopefully in the thriller and/or Italian challenges)

Thanks (l) I definitely have issues with some inclusions and rankings on the list myself, but as you say, I'm just here to collate the data and let it speak for itself. I do my best to tweak things to keep it fair and reasonable, but that doesn't mean the voters are :P

Chris sent me an updated version of the counter program that I've been using that takes into account films appearing on ranked lists. I finally ran it the other day, you can see what the list would like here: https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/tszd ... htysparks/ (no new lists or any other changes from when it was calculated in May).

I've also decided to make it my primary film-watching goal to watch all the films that have been nominated, particularly focusing on looking for 'hidden gems', though I'll wade through the crap as well. When I finally catch up with writing my little reviews, I'll start posting about them in the TSZDT challenge thread I guess. This is my watchlist: https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/blep/mightysparks/

I've only just started making the list on IMDb so it won't be complete for a few hours but here's all the TSZDT nominated films sorted by how many lists they appear in: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls048105041/

So, I was looking for some new lists and I'm not sure how I should go about dealing with 'best films of 2019 (so far) lists. Should I wait and only use lists made in the last couple months of 2019? Would mid-year lists be suitable? Ignore lists made before July-ish?

Probably just best to wait until 2019 is over?

I vote for not including any "Best of 2019" lists at all - unless you have a similar number of "Best of 1984", "Best of 1977" etc lists factored in already.

I don't think mid-year lists are suitable. They're always weak lists, often released so they can use the latest big horror release as clickbait, and because they will distort the rankings towards films made earlier in the year. I don't think a shortage of "best of 2019 lists" will be a problem, and everybody who's releasing a "best so far" list will be releasing a full year's list as well.

The lists get balanced so different numbers of lists for different years won't distort the results.

I just found out there's 23 movies about Dracula just in this list. Which could make sense because it's a giant list and there's plenty of movies about him but can he be the most official character in ICM?

Zatoichi has 27 official films since all his films are available on the Criterion Collection, James Bond has 24.

As of 2012, Dracula has the most movies (272) of any fictional (non-human) character. Sherlock Holmes has the most movies (254) of any fictional (human) character. I will leave it to you to determine how many are official. https://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/ne ... -tv-41743/

Sherlock only have 10 official checks, half of them thanks to the russian series. It's a character deemed more suitable for TV, hence why the low number of films/official checks.

Dracula has 25 official checks: 23x TSZDT, 1x ATWBO, 1x 21stCentury.

Both of them have been adapted by the same writers for BBC.

I thought it was gonna rival old Drac but Frankenstein has only 19 official checks.

There are also something like 20 of the Tsuri baka nisshi movies, too. For human (non-fictional) characters.

And according to this page there are 23 Detective Conan movies.

Updated OP with some lists. I hadn't looked for any since last July. Lots of 2019 and 2010s lists.. I was surprised not to find any best outbreak/disease movies kind of lists tbh.

It's also pretty depressing how many more 'best streaming/Netflix' lists pop up every time I search. Ughh. They are taking over (I don't include any of them btw).

These lists make a lot of sense of course (apart from geographical problems). People can look at such a list and be watching a film 5 minutes later.
But yeah, the quality of these lists tends to be quite low, not in the least because they are mostly made up from a commercial viewpoint rather than a quality one.

Thanks for the lists, guys! Just updated the OP. Also scrapped the Vulture list in favour of the ranked one. Doing a bit of reshuffling now as I noticed a few errors (putting lists in the wrong folder etc). Hoping everything will be in order by next month..

I've been using both, though I'm not sure if they're still using all the ballots from years ago.
The initial list was straightforwardly made up of ballots from industry professionals. Then when they updated it they added some extra ballots and recalculated so that Babadook and It Follows could make it onto the bottom of the list. These additional ballots were added to the TSZDT lists individually. This time it seems that they've gone ahead and swapped out six films that they didn't think deserved to be there with some new ones to keep it current without doing any reballoting. So I suppose at this stage the TimeOut list is a hybrid.

Also, I have more lists:

TimeOut's The 100 best horror films (2019) (ranked) <- This is an update of the previous Time Out list. The lazy list updating method was that they just replaced six films with new ones. Hereditary replaces Martyrs (2008), Get Out replaces Idi i Smotri, A Quiet Place replaces Angel Heart, Midsommar replaces Wolf Creek, Halloween (2018) replaces El orfanato, and It (2017) replaces Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer.
Just based on those replacements I cannot trust the quality of the process used to generate that list.

I'm considering doing another serious revamping of the weighting system. All the lists have a final weighting between 0.125 and 9. The average final weighting of all lists is only 1.6 (these are also later adjusted by the weightings of the folder they're placed in). I use two types of weightings (source and type, though some lists have two types), and each of those is assigned a weighting between 0.5 and 3. I'm going to be expanding the source categories because they are too broad, but I'm not sure if I should adjust the range of weightings as well.

Finding the right numbers for this list is the worst (or maybe the second worst after having to change the numbers for 2700 different files.. and then having to do it again later when I change my mind).

You can do a bulk rename of files using this utility:
https://www.bulkrenameutility.co.uk/

It allows you to replace parts of filenames, just make sure to make a backup copy of the whole directory before you use it.
