Rankings for official checks vs. total checks
Rankings for official checks vs. total checks
What is the gap between your ICM ranking for official checks than your ranking for total checks? Just curious what the typical discrepancy is. I suppose a much higher ranking for total checks would suggest someone who watches a lot of trash (ha) or someone who marks TV episodes and off-topic trivia like that, whereas a much higher ranking for official checks suggests someone who's extra-competitive about seeing films to boost his rating or a light user who just doesn't bother with attempting to check off every seen film. Or...maybe someone who just has really, really academic taste? And a gap close to zero suggests a dedicated soul who tries to check everything he has seen regardless of worrying about what's on top lists.
Currently, I'm 78 slots higher for official checks than for total checks. I looked at the gaps for my ICM "Friends" and found their margins ranged from a person ranking 90 slots higher for total checks (my only friend with a higher total-check ranking) to a person ranking 2262 slots higher for official checks. Also have one friend whose gap is a mere 30 (wow). The average gap including myself is...ummm...about 325.

I just reached 6000 checks , 6004 now overall and 4817 official checks.
So I am ranked 20 for official checks but only 126 for total checks which shows I concentrate more on official checks for sure.

Tons of amazing movies are unofficial, I highly suggest trying to work outside of the official lists from time to time.
But I stand at 2070 official and 3215 total, with no TV sitcom checks.

I have 3906 official checks and 5868 checks in total. I don't check TV episodes (aside from MST3K, and things like Masters of Horror), but I do check TV shows. Still, the majority of those are films and a couple of short films. I check everything that I see, so that's basically as accurate as I'm gonna get. I think my 'unofficial' rank is 132 and my normal rank is 61. I'm pretty balanced with unofficial and official checks now though, I don't pay much attention.
(On past occasions, I observed a gap of as much as 175 or so, but I've been watching a lot more unofficial shorts lately and that narrowed the margin.)

Total checks: 2964, rank 783.

I don't check television episodes, so almost all checks are movies and shorts

Official checks: #27 (4616 checks)
Total checks: #45 (8344 checks)
I occasionally check a TV series (not individual episodes, but one check for the whole series) if I've seen every episode and the show is finished, with no new seasons to come. I also check a few director-focused TV series episodes individually, like Masters of Horror or Screen Directors' Playhouse. TV series checks would be a tiny proportion of my total.

3344 official checks (ranked 114) vs 5822 (ranked 134) unofficial checks... Almost 2500 movies of difference !
Each month, I watch an average of 20 official checks, out of a total of 35 movies. I don't check TV shows, but there could be a few shorts as well (mostly silent and animation I like to keep track of).

I have never cared about total checks and I didn't even know there is a ranking. How do I find it?
I think the total is ruined by users who check every episode of Days of Our Lives
I checked an episode of Family Guy recently. Sorry if that offended anyone.

Not exactly, it just may reveal non-canonical watching habits. Keep in mind that most of the official lists are American centered and even in that they are mainstream centered.Ebbywebby on Dec 26 2013, 03:18:56 PM wrote:I suppose a much higher ranking for total checks would suggest someone who watches a lot of trash (ha) or someone who marks TV episodes and off-topic trivia like that

It's also Internet Movie Data Base, yet they have TV Episodes and stuff. And I import from IMDB. What can you do?

I tend to agree but there are exceptions, shows like The Twilight Zone and Alfred Hitchcock Presents are essentially short films so why not check them.Kasparius on Dec 26 2013, 06:45:32 PM wrote:It's ICheckMovies, not ICheckTVEpisodes.

There may be a better way to do it, but I went under People ---> All Profiles, and sorted "Order by....Checks." I figured I'd appear in the first 3-4 pages, since my total is large. (I appeared low on page 2.) If I'd expected to have to click through more pages than that, I wouldn't have bothered. No offense intended to folks who would want to search around -- I just don't care enough myself. (Plus like I said, there might be some more efficient way...)Local Hero -- aka MestnyiGeroi on Dec 26 2013, 06:15:58 PM wrote:I have never cared about total checks and I didn't even know there is a ranking. Ah, thanks. So there isn't a ranking, but one can find oneself in the lists and count the spots?burneyfan on Dec 26 2013, 07:43:13 PM wrote:There may be a better way to do it, but I went under People ---> All Profiles, and sorted "Order by....Checks." Can't be bothered, but my total rank would be much worse than my official rank-- that's clear.

I don't care that people check TV episodes, but I won't so it would be nice if there were a way to filter the episodes out in the overall checks list.
You're ranked #400 for total checks, Local Hero. It took me about 30 seconds to find this out.

3335 offical checks - #116
4917 total checks - #221
When I started on ICM I had about 53% official checks (in 70 years of watching movies). As of October I was up to 67%, which I calculate means that since I joined ICM 83% of my checks have been official.
I don't watch that many TV episodes, but occasionally check them if I see them on Netflix or something - I'm not part of the TV culture.

I knew this thread was going to end up in a discussion about checking TV episodes, so therefor I didn't and won't post my total rank. The total rank doesn't mean a thing.

75.7% of my checks are official. Maybe not too bad considering that for most of my life I've been watching films with barely any canon or reference around. As for the remaining titles, most of them are forgotten, too local or simply bad but I'm sure quite a few will become official in future list adoptions, so I expect that ratio to go up little by little (or pretty fast if the trend initiated by the "More noirs" list is continued). I don't check TV episodes but I'm not too purist about that.
And I'd like to see this kind of stastistics integrated in ICM, by the way.

I would probably have one or two thousands of additional checks if ICM had existed when I started watching movies... I've been watching 500 movies a year for over 20 years now, and I know I've forgotten about most of them today (well, mostly because they are forgettable).
And I wouldn't want to check episodes of "Papa Poule"...

I don't check tv episodes and unofficial shorts. a lot of french movies in all style mainstream, author, genre, blockbusters, old and recent movies. french cinema not well known for ICM but well known in france. and off course american genre movies

Doesn't make much sense though because I never checked movies which aren't on any official list (even not for my iCM favorites, which may look odd). I could compare with IMDb, but there again I don't rate shorts.
One thing is for sure: If I had to guess, I'd say my quota of official list films has gone from ~50-60% to ~85% (2013-movies already included). I don't find much time to watch movies aside from the (iCM-)canon anymore, which is a bit sad. Don't let the lists consume you, guys!

I think I only have one or two dozen TV episodes checked (I added those to boost my numbers on ChrisReynolds' All horror list, a handful of episodes from Masters of Horror, maybe a few others), so it's mostly movies for me. My rankings are:
Official: #29 (4574 top list checks)
Unofficial: #9 (13517 total checks)
Giving me a percentage of 33.8%. Yep, I watch a lot of crap.

Not thinking of any one list...this last update kept me pretty nicely afloat between alterna-noir and action (and i haven't touched Anthology stuff yet), but it always seems to pan out that way, even with some "tonier" lists...if you watch a wide array of stuff, some of it winds up official, sooner or later...Kasparius on Dec 29 2013, 01:27:42 PM wrote:Did you have Action A-Z on your mind?burneyfan on Dec 29 2013, 01:26:02 PM wrote:Hey, today's crap is tomorrow's new official list check! ;)Leopardi on Dec 29 2013, 09:13:28 AM wrote:Giving me a percentage of 33.8%.
