Well at least one horror list made it :( WE NEED MORE HORROR LISTS. Most underrepresented thing on the site.

The Story of Film @ #10 I dont get it, it's just mentioned films, most already official
my shorts @ #32 fine, this should be higher!
Golden 100 of Russian Animation very high @ #36 mind, I voted it down IIRC
AFA only #42
Noirs @ #164,170
AVN #215 that's the end of that campaign
he or A. or Armo or any

I see Truffaut, Arab, Guardian, Cannes GP, Academy Award Documentary, Time Out Comedy and/or Annecy 100 as the next official bunch and I'd be fine with that

edit: yeah also Latin and Balkans please :)

170. 75 pts (0.781[1.76])962 Noir Films from They Shoot Pictures, Don't They? (including TSPDT's 250 Quintessential Noir Films)
Adopting this list was a mistake imo. They should've gone with the BFI list instead. I think the guys made their decision too quickly without putting a lot of thought into it. As I said in the other thread, this list is basically a list of every film that has ever been referred to as noir by anyone.
34. 142 pts (1.479[1.48]) LoveHKFilm.com's The Best Hong Kong Films Ever
I'm glad to see this list did well. I was afraid it would do poorly because we already have 2 official Chinese lists. I think there are a lot of people on iCM who are interested in watching fun Hong Kong movies but less interested in Chinese-language cinema in general, so this list would fill a gap on iCM.
12. 162 pts (1.688[1.52])Cien años sin soledad: The Greatest Latin American Films of All Time
This was my #1 choice (not my favorite list but my first choice for adoption), so of course I'm glad to see it did well. It's very important for this list to be official because it covers a big area of the world that's very underrepresented on iCM, and also the list creation method is good (a poll of experts).

http://www.slantmagazine.com/film/featu ... op-10s/212

It includes Honourable Mentions, and Blind Spots.

It's not that I want more, it's that the rigid restriction of yearly top 10s doesn't make for particularly good lists. The fact that he appears to update his list does make it better than most yearly top 10s, though.

22. 148 pts (1.542[1.43])TimeOut' 100 Best French Films
I'm glad to see this list did well. I thought it might do poorly because we already have an official French list, but it's the best French list available, so it should definitely be official.
137. 94 pts (0.979[1.57])Royal Film Archive of Belgium's Most Important and Misappreciated American Films
I don't understand why this list did poorly compared to the French list. Is it because the list ends in 1976? Or because people prefer French cinema over American cinema? Or because there are already too many official American films? Both lists are the best lists available for their respective countries, and both countries already have official lists. The AFI lists are bad, so it would've been nice to give people a better alternative. I guess the Rosenbaum list and BFI list are also better, but I would've preferred this list because it's ranked and based on a big poll.
8. 168 pts (1.75[1.39])Donald Richie's Guide to Japanese Film
I'm surprised this list did so well. I don't have anything against Donald Richie (I gave the list a 2), but the Kinema Junpo list is good imo, so we don't really need another all-time list of approximately the same size. I guess one advantage of Richie's list is that he made it with the intention of it being a guide, but I think the Junpo list also works well as a guide. I would've preferred Kinema Junpo annual top 10s, which provides something different because it's a megalist (but still a small percentage of all Japanese films, so it's actually based on quality, unlike the noir megalist). Also Eigahiho would provide something different because it's for a specific decade.
89. 110 pts (1.146[1.33])dGenerate Films' Best Chinese-Language Films of the 2000s
This list did worse than the Eigahiho list, even though it has a better source (it was based on a poll, whereas we don't know exactly who made the Eigahiho list). I guess people are more interested in Japanese cinema than Chinese cinema.
108. 104 pts (1.083[1.37])Yle News' Best Finnish Films of All Time
I have no idea why this list did poorly. Why did it do worse than countries with fewer available films (Cuba, Egypt, the Philippines)? I know there are Kaurismaki fans on this forum so I thought it would do better.
20. 150 pts (1.563[1.64])Roger Ebert's Annual Top Ten Lists
Ebert is popular, so I'm not surprised this list did well, but we already have an official Ebert list. This one isn't much bigger, so I don't see the point. The fact that he forces himself to choose 10 from each year and doesn't update the lists means that it's just a less accurate list of his favorite movies. The Rosenbaum list doesn't interest me very much for the same reason (although Rosenbaum is a more interesting critic, so I'd prefer Rosenbaum over Ebert). I'd prefer either the Ed Gonzalez list or the Andrew Sarris because they don't already have official lists.
11. 164 pts (1.708[1.49])Academy Award Documentary
11th? Seriously? We already have 2 official documentary lists which are much better than this one.
211. 38 pts (0.396[1.4])Harvard University's Suggested Film Viewing List: Single-channel Video (2012)
I'm surprised this list did so poorly. I thought people liked the Harvard lists. Maybe people thought there were only 16 films on the list, but there are much more than that. It's just that most of them aren't on IMDb.
Armoreska on wrote:The Story of Film @ #10 I dont get it, it's just mentioned films, most already official
It's a documentary about the history of film, so if you watch all of the films, it would be a pretty good introduction to film history. I haven't seen the documentary, but judging from the list, it seems like Mark Cousins is pretty knowledgeable about film history. Of course, if Mark Cousins' intention was to create a list, it probably would have resulted in a better list, but nonetheless it's better than most of the similar lists that other people have made.

Yes, all of these. But particularly the first and the last.

I think the discussion in the other thread indicates that being a huge megalist works against the Kinema Junpo annual top 10s list, and the Ritchie list is different enough from the current Kinema Junpo list that it serves a purpose as a guide.

I agree about both of these. The Oscar have a notorious history of neglecting the best documentaries even when they are from the US and contemporaneously popular and highly praised. Hoop Dreams and The Thin Blue Line are the most egregious examples that come immediately to mind. Not to mention lots of other stuff not from the US or that didn't meet the Oscars' bizarre rules for appropriate release.

Yeah, that's definitely an issue. The other Harvard list (Experimental) did well, so it's likely if you added everything to imdb and had the list be of proper length it would do better.

When I say "best list" I mean most deserving of official status and most interesting to work on. Sorry for not making that clear. It's not only based on what films are on the list, but also based on how the list was created and whether or not the list is ranked. Ranked lists based on polls are usually the most interesting lists to me. I'm not considering personal lists because they're not eligible for adoption.

I haven't seen every film on the AFI list, but I've seen 88/100, and based on what I've seen it's obviously not as good as the Royal Film Archive list. Even if the remaining 12 are masterpieces, AFI would still be a worse list overall (although I don't deny that there are many good films on the list).

An unranked list would have to be much better than a ranked poll-based list (in terms of average quality) in order to be a "better list" by my definition. An example would be the BFI animation list, which I think is better than the OFCS list (even though BFI isn't ranked). The Royal Film Archive and Time Out lists are pretty good lists, so it would be difficult for another list to be much better than those lists.

I've only seen about 1/3 of the Rosenbaum list, but based on what I've seen, the average quality seems similar to the Royal Film Archive list. It might be slightly better, but I can say with a high level of confidence that it's not much better, even if I'm not 100% sure. I've seen fewer films from the BFI American Independent list, which means a larger error bar for judging quality, but the average quality is lower (based on what I've seen), so I can still say with a high level of confidence that it's not much better than the Royal Film Archive list. My reasoning is the same for the French lists (similar average quality, but not "better lists").

I agree that the Academy Award Documentary list is a very poor one and shouldn't be adopted. Their choices are unfathomable and quite poor but I guess that goes for almost all of the Academy's decisions :P

I didn't like the Single-Channel Video list because most of the works that I looked up are a form of installation art and are meant to be seen in a form and context that can not be recreated in any home cinema.

This

I think people have rated lots of lists according to the already seen films (or the ones that they want to see), that is, from the point of view of personal taste. Big mistake for quality results!

Well I think almost the whole list is Video Art and was originally part of an exhibition. To give an example:
Stamping in My Studio (Bruce Nauman, 1968, US) is a series of shots the artist literally just stamping around his studio filmed from all kinds of angles. This review from the Tate website explains it well:
In 1966, just graduated, Nauman contemplated what it was that an artist was supposed to do. He concluded that ‘if I was an artist and I was in the studio, then whatever I was doing in the studio must be art.’ Art at this point ‘became more of an activity and less of a product’ and he began to use his body as a material.

Concerned to incorporate the mundane elements of daily life into his work, Nauman used his behaviour, obsessively pacing around the studio, as the starting point for a series of films and videos made from 1967–9. He recorded himself performing simple, repetitive activities, each responding to a specific ‘problem’ suggested in the title. Physically and mentally demanding, these actions were often performed for one hour – the length of a videotape. As a result, the threat of failure is ever present, evoking in the viewer an empathy Nauman described as a ‘body response’.

The figure in these recordings, which are endlessly looped, becomes a metaphor for the rituals and struggles of human existence and owes much to the plays and stories of Samuel Beckett that Nauman first read in 1966. Nauman shares with Beckett an obsession with the human condition: both use repetitive, non-productive and often solitary physical activity to reveal the lot of humankind – its modes of behaviour, frustrations, abilities and frailty.
This piece is one that loses most of it's meaning if you watch the 5 minute short on Youtube. I looked up a few other pieces which had similar backstories and I concluded that this list was one that didn't really work on ICM. YMMV :)

Thanks for the link to the review... interesting... but what do you mean by "form"? Is there something special about the environment in which the film is projected? Or do you just need to be aware of why he made the film and what he's expressing? Would it be enough to just read this review and then watch the film on Youtube?

My experience is that video installations in a museum setting with several monitors/projections running parallel video streams influence my very differently than watching a video on my laptop/TV. At home you can get a sense of what the artist was going for by reading up on the background and watching it but it's just not the same as experiencing it in it's intended setting and format.

I agree with Sander and didn't vote that list up for the same reason. I think we sometimes forget that people made a whole bunch of the more esoteric films that keep getting complained about here (Arnulf Rainer comes to mind), with very specific viewing conditions in mind to fit their conceptual purpose. This list seemed full of that kind of art. I don't feel like encouraging people to watch those films in crappy youtube quality with a review that explains what they should experience because they want some check on a website.

Me too. I don't know too much about them but it seemed more like a 'physical' thing, rather than just something to watch at home and therefore didn't really suit the criteria for a film watching website (regardless of whether it's a good list or not).

I think it would be better for them to be watched in any form than to be forgotten forever because the perfect conditions will not be met at home (or ever again any place, in some cases). Most of them, when available, still work in a laptop.

I can't even remember which lists I voted for now :D I didn't pay any attention to what films were on the lists, just had a brief glance at how the list was made and whether it would be a useful list.

I thought single-channel and installation were two different things. Doesn't single-channel mean that it's only one video?

I agree that a list of video installations shouldn't be official, and I don't think any of the installations are on IMDb.

Disappointed Danny Peary's Cult Movies didn't do that well. I find it to be a better list than the 500 list.

Spoilers: jeff_v is Ed Gonzalez! *Gasp!* Tune in next week when it's revealed how many of the characters are related to the dog who was in a strange accident at the factory that turned her into the dog (which will be seen on the spinoff webseries in 3 years (and yeah I thought the dog was a dude as well! Surprises all around)).

Oh and those murders in season one were obviously committed by one of mjf's upgraded successors sent back from the future to finish the job he couldn't because he developed feelings for Sophia, the maid's second cousin's uncle's niece thrice-removed.

I think the standard definition of single-channel is one video but many of the films on the Harvard aren't. Another example I found was this one: Anne Walsh - Mom and me watching Zoolander. I think it would be fantastic and hilarious one to view but its strength lies in watching both side by side at the same time.

They just adopted some lists recently, but they'll probably look at the results for ideas the next time they adopt lists. It's not a fixed number. I guess they'll keep adopting lists until there are no more good lists to adopt.

I'm pleased at how well the Annecy list did... and that there is some love for the Anime list.

Personally I think if we are talking about country lists that it would be better to add more different countries that focus on a specific one that is already represented... or a better comedy list... or just adopt like most of these... I'm not making sense.

Either way... I want more animation lists!
