Your Lowest User Rank for Any List

#281

Post by Rene Narciso » December 1st, 2016, 10:56 pm

There are eight lists that I have watched no movies, the infamous FESPACO list, and also the Portuguese, Turkish, Greek, Romanian, Hungarian, Belgian, and Finnish lists.

From the lists I have ranks in, the three I really suck are:

Top 100 Animated Features of All Time - #40743
All-Time Worldwide Box Office - #29724
100 Animated Feature Films (BFI Screen Guide) - #23452

It seems like I have a major blind spot when it comes to Disney movies and stuff. I've seen some of the really old ones, and the really new ones, and I've seen the Lion King, but there is a stretch there with Alladin and Beauty and the Beast that I have missed.

And being ranked so low in the All-Time Worldwide Box Office list indicates that I'm a bit of a snob, I guess. I've seen about 40% of them. Mostly, the ones that appear in other lists too.

As a matter of pride, I'm trying to watch as many of the listed animated movies as possible. It sucks that the DVDs for famous "family" movies are among the most expensive out there.

Disney? It's their way of trying to control the market. They say it's to reintroduce different generations to their films, so, they re-release them every 7 or so years. Wait until then to buy them, if that's what you want to do. (Or at least, that's how it works here in the U.S.)

Miracle of miracles! A new list now rides the bottom of my rankings!

Savor the sweetness, zombies, it won't last for long - have a Russian film on the way. But won't be surprised if these two don't seesaw back and forth for some time. But had to share the big moment, even if it won't last THAT long.

so it's leaping frogs now - Zombies are in the rear at #364 with Live Russians overtaking at #356? Who will overtake the Poles at #341? Can Action A-Z make it to 325 (now at #339) while the Dutch 50 is at #312. Last, riding low at 300 is The Deuce (which shouldn't be confused with a deuce).

From the lists I have ranks in, the three I really suck are:

Top 100 Animated Features of All Time - #40743
All-Time Worldwide Box Office - #29724
100 Animated Feature Films (BFI Screen Guide) - #23452.
So, it's two months later. I still haven't watched any movies in those 8 lists, but I have progressed a lot in my formerly 3 worst lists.

Top 100 Animated Features of All Time is still my worst list, but I've climbed to #31486.
All-Time Worldwide Box Office, I've climbed to #27959.
Now my next worst list is Bodil Award, in which I'm ranked #16968. I have only watched Jagten. It reminds me that Lars von Trier is one of the few big name directors that I never watched any movies from.

I have moved up a lot in 100 Animated Feature Films (#13518). Watched a couple of animes in January.

I saw my first film from the Amanda list last night: "Kitchen Stories." Quite enjoyable. That just leaves the Bollywood and Turkish lists as my zero-check shames. ;)

All above 1000:
Amanda Award: 1125
Shorts: 1564
Best Cartoons Ever: 1783
Dutch Film: 2168 :( heavy days
Action! The Action Movie A-Z: 2345
iCM Most Checked: 3326
All-Time World Box Office: 4448

I would add I am quite proud of my rank of #2 on the Asian cinema list. The guy in the lead is an amazing beast though, it's a shame he seems to have disappeared.

I find it funny that a lot of people on here are terrible at recent blockbuster lists... (Most checked and the boxoffice lists.)

Well, All-Time World Box Office is a long list. It is also the list where quality isn't a factor to get in.

Top 5
Akira Kurosawa's A Dream is a Genius #2 - 101/102 - Very annoyed at the one movie missing subs
Russian Guild Of Film Critics - Best Russian Films
#11 - 95/102 - Should have finished this years ago, but somehow too lazy
FESPACO - Étalon de Yennenga - #18 - 15/22 - Thanks to an African challenge I participated in some years back, a lot of good stuff on the african lists
Guide to African Cinema - #48 - 14/42 see above
The 100 Best Films Of World Cinema - #89 - 99/105 I was racing Jon aka George Bailey in this list back in 2011, he gave up and then I never bothered finishing it either.

Bottom 5
Cinema Tropical - Top Ten Latin American Films of the Decade (2000-2009) - #4831 - 5/125 A bit embarrassing actually, I have no excuse. :(
iCheckMovies - Most Checked - #5321 - 229/250 blockbusters
Sundance Film Festival - Grand Jury Prize - #5965 - 4/38 - Hmm, any recommendations?
All-Time Worldwide Box office - #7942 - 373/684 blockbusters
50 Greatest Sequels - #9220 - 33/60 blockbusterzzz

Also have 3 lists where I'm unranked. :(
Belgian Film Awards
Film Critics Association's Best Romanian Films
Público's Best Portuguese Films

Yeah, they're two of my worse lists.

But as much as I want to receive credit for good taste, that is only part of the reason.

I suppose age is a factor. I'm 40. I used to watch a lot of popcorn blockbusters in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Not so much these days.

Money is another factor. Strangely enough, tickets for "commercial" cinema are a lot more expensive than arthouse and classics cinema in my country. If I can choose between watching stuff by Cocteau, Greenaway, Renoir, Kurosawa, etc. for 1/6 of the money I'd have to spend to see Fantastic Beasts and The Great Wall, then that is no choice at all.

Of course, one can always download these new movies, but I just can't be bothered, for most of them. I still have a soft spot for the Marvel movies, though.

Solid recs those. In addition, try the fabulous In the Soup (1992). Other good ones are Winter's Bone, Precious, Frozen River, Quinceañera, The Believer, Primer and Slam.

Still unranked on 17; out of the 164 others, the lowest ranks are:

50 Greatest Sequels - #76072
All-Time Worldwide Box office - #62296
Action - #57239
iCheckMovies - Most Checked - #55295
Sci-fi - #54871

I plan on watching a bit of Sci-fi over the next few months, so I'd like to keep track of eventual shifts in my bottom five.

They Shoot Zombies #697

The Dutch continue to be my nemesis! I admire your cycling but I'm have trouble cracking the top 50. Great progress in the Zombie list. I've flown up the All-time box office list, for better or for worst. The Action list is interesting, a very popular list on the site.

They Shoot Zombies - 3548 - 187/1000
Top 500 Horror - 3163 - 128/500
Box Office - 1986 - 440/615
250 Noir - 1624 - 36/250
21st Century - 1457 - 344/1001

Have been working through lists over rank 1000, and only have these 5 plus 50 Sequels (will be under 1000 soon), Action, 100 Westerns, Il Grande Italiano, More Noirs. So 9 lists over 1000; won't get horror under (probably ever), but the rest should get under by my next update here :)

50th percentile rank is 525. I've still seen at least 2 films from every list (5+ in all but FESPACO (2), Portugal (2), Greece (2), Belgium (3), and Hungary (4) ).

Best ranks on lists: 38 #1s (22 from IMDb)
100 Films of World Cinema - 19 - 104/105 [Heimat is remaining]
IMDb 2010s - 22 - 49/50 [refuse to watch My Name is Khan]
IMDb Top 250 - 53 - 248/250 [again, refuse to watch the newer Indian mafia films]
Anthology - 113 - 263/523
UNESCO - 122 - 118/830
FESPACO, Music, Sport, and African Cinema are all also top200.
Another year (roughly) since my last update. Lot of movement!

They Shoot Zombies - #2420 - 234/1000
250 Noir - #935 - 53/250
21st Century - #785 - 418/1003
Livejournal Russia 100 - #738 - 19/107
Criterion Eclipse - #733 - 12/174

As expected, all under 1000 except Horror for this update. :)

50th Percentile rank is #296. Still 3 lists with 2 films seen (FESPACO, Greece, Portugal).

Best ranks on lists: 46 #1s (27 from IMDb)
Best of Rotten Tomatoes - #40 - 97/100 [3 from 2016 entered, I'll watch those come award season]
IMDb Sport - #56 - 38/50
IMDb 2010s - #63 - 49/50 [still refuse to watch My Name is Khan]
IMDb Top 250 - #89 - 249/250 [again, still refuse to watch Gangs of Wasseypur]
UNESCO - #90 - 143/832
then Harvard Narrative, Anthology, 100 Animated BFI, FESPACO are all top150.
They Shoot Zombies - 1821 - 267/1000
250 Noir - 936 - 54/250
Livejournal Russia - 756 - 19/107
Spaghetti Westerns - 736 - 9/51
Amanda Award - 734 - 7/31

Median rank is 260. Still 2+ from all lists (3+ in all but FESPACO, Greece, and Hungary).

Best Ranks:
50 #1s
Rotten Tomatoes - 7 - 99/100 (missing the recent add Get Out)
IMDb Sport - 53 - 38/50
IMDb Top 250 - 243/250 (all India/Turkey "mafia" films)
Harvard Narrative - 97 - 278/348
UNESCO - 98 - 145/832

I've been monitoring my lowest rankings for the last few years (for the Personal Film goal thread - going for top 300 on every official list this year) but for some reason haven't responded in this thread yet. Here are my bottom 5 as of this morning:

Film Totaal Top 100: #895 (98/100)
TV Mini-series: #549 (10/50)
ekolay.net's Best Turkish Films: #488 (9/53)
Amanda Award - Best Film: #479 (9/31)
Goya Award: #475 (8/31)

Incidentally, last year on this day (roughly) my bottom 5 was:

Film Critics Association's Best Romanian Films: #1527 (1/59)
Animation: #1147 (38/50)
2010s: #1024 (41/50)
Film Totaal Top 100: #977 (92/100)
IMDb Top 250: #973 (233/250)

And in 2015 on this day (roughly) the bottom 5 was:

Animation: #7345 (27/50)
2010s: #3960 (31/50)
2000s: #2989 (38/50)
Amanda Film - Best Award: #2690 (1/29)
Belgian Film Awards: #2050 (2/29)

I'm surprised the Dutch Film list doesn't appear above - it seems to have been my nemesis for three years running!

I just checked your post earlier in the page and saw how similar it was to my comment. Maybe we should form a support group.

I know the Dutch lists shows up for a lot of people due to the high Dutch user base, but, why the Amanda list? Are there that many Norwegians using the site, too?

75,393 for the 100 animated features. I really don't actually want to improve that score.

How early on in the site's history was Amanda adopted as official? I believe that the earlier a list is added, the more competitive it'll be. Or there just happen to be a disproportionate number of Norwegians on the site.

There are only 3 movies on the Amanda list that make an appearance on another list and none of those is especially well known or from a well known director. So its unlikely that you happen to see one of those movies. The movies that do have a fair number of checks did fairly well in the European circuit (or at least in the Netherlands as well), but not spectacularly. So there probably are a fair number of Europeans that keep up with the current arthouse scene that have seen a few of them. However, I wonder if those movies even made it to America. So it's not necessarily Norwegians, but Europeans in general I think (or at least us Dutchies).
