I hadn't mentioned that the quote I dropped was actually made in direct response to another users quote. I don't see anything malicious though and maybe when the user posted that comment 7+ years ago, the joke was understood by other users.

psst: it was made in reply to you! :o You were saying how much of the title you were able to translate from French - I think that's because it text that came after the titles and didn't rely on the French narration. But even with the context, it's seems to be an unhelpful non-sequitur.

A comment on the page for the Jean-Claude Van Damme action pic Knock Off (1998) had me chuckling:

“Did you ever think to yourself "I wanna see a movie directed by Tsui Hark and starring Jean-Claude Van Damme that revolves heavily around jeans counterfitting"? Well if so, you found your movie. And you need serious help”

I read some hilarious comments the past weeks, coming across so many of the better populated comment boxes of mainstream trash from 2008-2013. It's not often you see 30 to 50 comments for a movie on ICM (anymore), right? Sad!

Yet I, again, bring up this thread for an insanely vulgar negative example of the community. I'm sorry.
Somewhere I saw an user who had Pepe in his avatar and was curious what the activites of someone with such a choice would look like. And right there, there was his comment on Lord of the Rings.
Just how bad could it be, hm?
Not that much of a surprise that many of the other assertions were insipid as well. You decide what to do with all that.

I've been criticized now and then for removing comments, but can we all agree this post should be gone? I've got two daughters and I get sick reading such a comment. But even if you haven't got a daughter, I'm sure you can understand this crossed a line.

Why on Lord of the Rings, btw?

Everything is politics.
I think you mean economy. I didn't mean economy. We talking culture on this here film site.
It's quite clear he's a 4channer. And yet it's unlikely to be a joke. I agree with the sentiment, even if I wouldn't of course put it in those terms, I can't dislike it either. It is however fairly off-topic. Neither Merry nor Pippin even had a daughter but a son.
Why complain about "dragging" "politics" into "this"? The complaint lounge link is in the signature.

It's not even a matter of crossing lines or whatever. It's simply off-topic.

It's also pretty sexist I guess, portraying a girl/woman as some kind of object owned by men (father/boyfriend).

And via our 2x1001 movies rundown, I came to remember where I saw one of my very ICM-specific most favorite comments of all time!

The following wonderful moment occurred on the site for Sult (1966), but everyone who is having a halfway active look at comment sections for the last 10 years will know it could have happened just anywhere ..

He seems to have given up spamming the site about four years ago. While I feel for him - it takes a lot of work to write a book, some even invest a fair amount to pay for things like editing and cover design, and then they are left to climb the mountain of self-promotion which either consumes a huge portion of one's time or means spending even more money - but spamming a fan site isn't the way to do it. Wonder how many people bought the book from iCM. He'd probably have done better buying an ad on the site; lord knows he's managed to generate a lot of badwill with this choice.

Oh, I think I entirely misunderstood since "my book" means "the book I've written" in my world. I think all he's saying is what is in the copy of 1001 Movies ... that his daughter gave to him. So he's not pimping something he wrote, but he occasionally watches other things as well (not in my book). So really, all he's trying to do is generate traffic to his blog. Either way, spam is as spammy does.

He says "not in the book" instead of "not in my book". I never read it as his own book.

I honestly couldn't figure out which it was. Every time I see one of his comments I have both thoughts in my head - is he talking about his own book, or another book? Never really cared, always seemed amusing if rather obnoxious and yeah, spammy.

At first when I joined iCM and noticed his comments, I thought he was talking about Schneider's 1001MYMSBYD, because to me back then that was THE book. After that I learned there were more books about movies.
