Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

A superhero movie wins at Venice. Can we just give Joaquin Phoenix his Oscar now?

Really shocked that a superhero movie won at venice, especially with Martel being the jury president. Plus I love Joaquin Pheonix. Almost makes me wanna see it but it looks like the teenage kind of edgy film and the director is terrible.

It's not a superhero movie.. I would say it's more like The King of Comedy.

Yeah, the latest full trailer I saw made it look like this lifts big-time from The King of Comedy, with De Niro this time in Jerry Lewis’ role, and Joker made out to be a Rupert Pupkin-like character.

But yeah, would not have expected this to win the top prize at a major festival.

One can certainly do worse than making a modern Taxi Driver/King of Comedy hybrid with Joaquin stepping in for De Niro. In fact, I'd say it's advisable if you're a Todd Phillips to just take from your betters bc your own instincts are such shit.

Sorry, I've just been busy with all kinds of real life stuff. We bought a house recently, and I'm working on all kinds of fixes and updates on the house (plus run-ins with various nasty critters), and at the same time I'm needing to spend an absurd amount of time on leadership stuff at my kids' school and I'm coaching a Lego League team. I don't even really have time to watch movies, it's 30 minutes here, 45 minutes there. Just... really busy right now.

I'll get on the updates as soon as I can.

EDIT: Just realized that my copy of Asian Cinema is still packed away in a box somewhere. I'll have to update without being able to double-check.

2nd EDIT: Can't figure out where to add the movies, so I think I'll just hold off on it for now. I'll see if I can't find the book somewhere to verify before adding. Not knowing for sure that it's the right movies and not knowing where to place them is one "not knowing" too many for me right now. Remind me, if I don't get it done soon.
Personal film goals for 2019.

Joker should be added. The source link at the bottom of the page doesn't link to list on Box Office Mojo but to the iCM list itself, by the way.

Why? It's such an old list, I'm surprised there are any changes/updates.

Edit: I just looked for the two Owen Land shorts. Film of Their 1973 Spring Tour appears to be 10 minutes long and is available at the CFMDC. Diplo's not listed.
Edit 2: Just realized that Film wasn't on imdb previously, so that's probably why it wasn't listed here. I need to be less hasty with the reply button.

That was the initial period this was compiled, I guess. But it never stopped and very occasionally movies are added.

The additions and removals in the 2019 edition of "The 1001 movies you must see before you die" list have been confirmed: https://letterboxd.com/gubarenko/list/1 ... -die-2019/.

Pretty strange and grim changes according to my taste (a couple of personal favourites go out). But I have not seen all of the new films yet.

Following the imdb list renamming ...

Would it be possible to rename the "Criterion's Eclipse Collection" list to "The Criterion's Eclipse Collection" so that it will be closer to the "The Criterion Collection" list sorted my name ?

No. Renaming The Criterion Collection to "Criterion Collection" would be the solution if that's what you want. We've discussed list renaming in general before, but it's hard to find a standard and discussions have always fizzled out.

Can't imagine anyone would get worked up about an article in a list title, but then again ... stranger things and people.

I support going with "Criterion Collection" and so move. Second anyone?

I'd be in favour. It's counterintuitive that the two lists aren't beside each other alphabetically, since all other institutes/organizations with multiple similar-named lists seem to be.

BFI Guide is afterwards.

Not all TSPDT list have that in the titles (The 21st Century's Most Acclaimed Films, Brief Encounters, Ain't Nobody's Blues But My Own)
and those list wouldn't be near They Shoot Pictures, Don't They? anyway

Yeah, I was uncertain. TSPDT is a good example. All the BFI lists are still near each other, though, since they all start with "100". I'd prefer if they were renamed too, while we're at it, but they don't bother me too much.

(And obviously the imdb lists weren't together until the recent name changes)

Taking a quick look...

2 Cannes lists are together
5 Academy Award lists are together (though the fact that one is named Best Foreign Language Film Nominees while the other three are all Best Picture annoys the perfectionist in me).
3 TimeOut lists are together
2 Before You Die lists are together
5 TSPDT lists are not together (6 if you include Brief Encounters... I forget if that's part of it or not) except for the 2 noir lists
2 box office lists are together (though again, why is one All Time and the other All-Time?)
7 BFI Screen Guide lists are mostly together, but only because they're all "100 X films" (also not together if you consider the screen guides to be from the same source as the BFI Flare, BFI 100, and 360 classics lists)
2 icm lists are together
2 cahier de cinema lists are together
3 sight and sound lists are together (nomenclature is off, though... missing space after the dash for the documentary list, and "2012" should really be at the end, not the middle of the combined list title)
2 harvard lists are together
2 criterion lists are not together
5 AFI lists are together

Did I miss any?

Oh, and while we're on the subject of fixing titles, can we properly capitalize the Taschen list to "All-Time Favorite Movies"?

This annoys me every time I try and find the list. First I look for "TSPDT", then "21st", then I remember it is under "The". Hmmf.

In an ideal world (well, my ideal world), the progress page (the only place to view all official lists with any ease) would start titles with key words so that they are easy to find - e.g. "Canadian Films: Top 100", "Musicals: BFI Screen Guide" - but I'm guessing it would be impossible without fully renaming the lists in that manner...which actually I'd quite like, come to think of it.

Ditto to all that. I'm pretty used to most of them now so it's not a BIG deal, my obsessions run along different lines than titling, but it sure would make things more intuitive/simple.
