Blockbuster season is clearly over and the big guns are rolling in. Kis Uykusu is a contender for the overall top10 this year. Very deserved Golden Palm winner and the movie Ceylan seems to have been working towards all these years. I thought it would have stiff competition from the similar looking Leviathan, but that one is a very shallow shadow in comparison.

It has been an interesting month of worldcinema for me, thanks to the World Cup and another dive into Jugoslav new wave cinema. I also discovered a masterpiece from my own country, of all places, thanks to a retrospective of the work of Theo van Gogh who was murdered 10 years ago now. I finally had a chance to see some of his older stuff. Some of it is uneven, like some of the later movies I had already seen, but "Een Dagje naar het Strand" is a true masterpiece where everything (the writing, acting, images, humor, darkness) has a delicate balance, lifting it up in the same way his other movies can be dragged down by uneveness.

You need to see https://www.icheckmovies.com/movies/moe ... elijkende/ ! The Dutch masterpiece. Similar to The House is Black.
My father didn’t have the skill of a professional cameraman. The result? Avant-garde cinema.
I guess I do
it's a title that has been on my radar for a while, so I'll get there eventually
but the Dutch movie that I have not seen yet and the highest expectations of is "de Witte Waan"
I am working on Dutch cinema this year anyway... but also on a lot of other stuff, so I get distracted all the time
... before the year is out I hope to have seen de Witte Waan, Nothing Personal, Kan door Huid heen, de Weg naar het Zuiden, Baby Blue, het Meisje en de Dood and Golven at least... there should be room for Mother Dao too ;)

No offense to anyone, but I read the title as "Monty Crap"..

No offence
And i didn't know about that similar topic! ... Mmmhh... Not that i really feel alone, there might even be more room for personal discussion here... And i already keep log of all my viewings on MovieMeter, ICM and What I Watch, so I really want to stick to the recap at the end of the month, a quick lookback trying to make sense of it all

It was the month of the Leiden Film Festival and the International Documentary Festival Amsterdam. In between there were great new cinema releases too, like Violet, Mommy and Stray Dogs. I went ahead with other various 'projects', but towards the end I got totally swept up in Weimar cinema. The amount of movies in my collection on that front had been steadily growing over the years anyway, and the documentary "from Caligari to Hitler" was a great reason to finally delve into them. I learned many things in a very short while! amongst them that I think the Lilian Harvey musicals are far to frivolous for my taste and that Mezhrabpomfilm (or Prometheus Film) made two of the most impressive features of the entire Weimar period!

This month I have been mostly rounding up a few projects I had going. Like watching more Dutch cinema. Yesterday I watched "Nothing Personal" wich gives me at the very end of the year a bronze ICM award for the "gouden kalf" list. Also catched up on a few movies I had missed in cinema earlier in the year. The weather was cold and wet, so that was another reason for staying in most of the time. I did manage to see two Lav Diaz movies in cinema though. And, drum roll, Conan the Barbarian!! So nice to see that one in an original 35mm print in the cinema, after so many times on vhs and dvd (didn't watch my bluray yet

Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014)
As is tradition, this has been the month of the International Film Festival Rotterdam for me. the 44th edition, but for me personally it was the 17th. There are too many different impressions to make any coherent statement about all I saw. I'm glad I saw a few interesting things from India and from Vietnam, will certainly delve into those countries some more in the coming months. And although it is way too early to say this, I think Cavalo Dinheiro (Horse Money) has a very good change to end up being this years Winter Sleep for me: a number one at the end of the year. Both films are works which I feel have been worked towards by their authors for many years, through many very good films. They feel like a culmination or a magnum opus and therefore I also think it's right that both films won big festival prizes (Locarno and Cannes respectively)... hard to imagine what will come next for Costa and Ceylan
something smaller most definatly I think.

It has been a very busy month for cinema visits again, and there wasn't even any festival on! So there was little room in between to really delve into much stuff, although I did watch three Vietnamese films and the 'classics' where well represented with some rewatches and the two top titles of my "shamefull that you didn't already see these classics"-list with Fanny och Aleksander and Nashville. Aleksandr Nevskiy, Closely Watched Trains, Limelight, Kagemusha and Greed are still on there... might need to give them some attention in the coming month... or spread out the goodness over a larger period, not sure yet

This month has been for me mostly about entertainment/pulp cinema. A lot of Japanese stuff (lone wolf and cub series finally, and the works of Hibari Misora) and a lot of Cannon-type movies from the 80's. In between there were some cool features from India, Sweden, Russia, Egypt, Greece... so alltogether a nice eclectic mix
Also watched Kagemusha, so another classic gone from the list.

I need to rewatch more Mann films before saying a statement like this, but Blackhat is my highest rated Mann film so far, and my only favourite. A really great film.
My father didn’t have the skill of a professional cameraman. The result? Avant-garde cinema.
The thing that bothered me most in Blackhat was a veeery boring plot I guess. I understand Mann always gets praise for his stylistic power, so it shouldn't bother me, like it didn't in Miami Vice (his best work for me) or Collateral. But he just failed to wow me this time. The movie left me utterly cold.

I didn't really think much of Cartas da Guerra, the letters are beautiful in their alternating nature and brutal range, from resignation to all-out fury and I didn't think the film was able to convey it that well. What made you like it so much?

I like to watch movies in cinema, and visiting a few festivals every year boosts numbers too
the experience of a movie in a cinema is really different from watching a n-th gen copy without subs on an iPad or something... I'm one of those purists

The whole experience of the movie was great. I did not know the letters/book it was based on yet, and I am sure they are just as powerful on their own (there is a really great, strangely erotic. loveletter in there, used in the trailer too, very powerful in the beautiful Portugese language...) but I found the images just as powerful. And really adding to the experience. It is clear that the makers know and love Angola, the land and the people (the producer, also a great director, was born there) because I haven't seen it portrait quite like this before. So... on the whole just a great experience... like The Thin Red Line remade by Fred Kelemen or something... I don't like war movies much, but when they take on this kind of existentialist character, they just really resonate with me.PGonzalez on Nov 1 2016, 07:06:35 AM wrote:I didn't really think much of Cartas da Guerra, the letters are beautiful in their alternating nature and brutal range, from resignation to all-out fury and I didn't think the film was able to convey it that well. The erotic letter was undoubtedly the high point of the film, it is handled brilliantly - it is not heavy handed or gratuitous, they were definitely able to convey sex as a form of longing which is something really ambitious as it often just ends up falling flat and being ridiculous. I did like the impotence angle they were going for (the contained hopelessness of Lobo Antunes as his wife grew distant, how he distanced himself from his companions as a sort of retaliation or as if he himself begrudged them for not being her) and how they conveyed the dullness of it all, as if trying to show a man whose clock had stopped and how he dealt with his own awareness of the fact. Still, it failed to resonate with me. I guess I'll have to watch it again once it comes out on dvd.beavis on Nov 1 2016, 08:32:12 AM wrote:The whole experience of the movie was great. Vuelven is a very interesting film, really. It's received a lot of applauses in both PIFFF and BIFFF, major fantastic film festivals, but its scope is really beyond genre.
And the Imagine-festival audience was very enthusiastic about it too. I think precisely becáuse it goes beyond a simple genre formula and tries to say something about an actual painful situation, that is happening right now in Mexico (although the director pointed out that she also got some strong personal reactions from other places in the world where people could also relate to the drama. As an unexpected example she named native american communities in Canada). Yet it still also works great as both fantasy and horror, has got a truly great ensemble of child-actors and even some animation... what's not to like!cinephage on Apr 23 2018, 03:53:20 AM wrote:Vuelven is a very interesting film, really.
