This is a place for all that picture junk I compulsively collect and share. It is something of a film log as I'll usually post screenshots from films I have just watched. To make this dump less dumpy than previous experiments I'll do one picture per post (or film) and the rest in spoiler tags.

Spoilers for 'Journal d'un curé de campagne' (1951).

Image

«Dionysus, the Greek God of ecstasy and madness, he had a potion too. To drink his holy wine was to drink the blood of God. In fact, you were drinking the God to become the God, this is where we get the whole idea of enthusiasm, from the Greek word enthousiázō [ἐνθουσιάζω, from ἐν (en, “in”) + θεός (theós, “god”) + οὐσία (ousía, “essence”)], the essence of the God lives within you, you have become divine.»
<><>><><<><>><><<><>><><<><>><><<><>><><
Image

«The existentialists [...] agree that the significant thing about man is not those traits and instincts which he might share with the animals - with the famous white rats of the laboratory, for instance - it's the distinctively human qualities of a being who has in him somewhere a wellspring of freedom to decide what he will make himself, a being who knows he will die and who can raise questions about why he is here. All of these existential psychologists feel that there is such a thing as over-adjustment and that man should find himself not by adjusting to his society but by learning to value his own free uniqueness.»

Image
Image
Image
Image

«But bad faith is not just an attitude toward oneself, it involves also an attitude toward others. In general we may say that bad faith consists in accepting absolutely the customs and the outlook of the society around one as though it were absolutely true for eternity.»

Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

«By saying that man is the being who is what he is not and who is not what he is Sartre merely means that man has no fixed reality. That he is constantly in the process of making himself something, but that he is never quite the same as his particular acts. ...

Image
Image
Image

... Sartre also says that man never is, he is always about to be, and here we see the same view expressed with regard to the future, for at any given moment man is living in terms of a projection of himself into the future, what Sartre calls "The Project". It is just as though each person carried around with himself a little shell of emptiness into which he projected what he was about to become. ...

Image
Image
Image

... Suppose we think of it this way, I make a rendezvous with myself down there in the future. But who will show up at the rendezvous? Will it be the I who made the appointment, or will it be some new I which this consciousness has created out of the nothingness which it brings into the world.»

Image
Image

«Sartre feels that most men simply cannot face the burden of this self-creative life, and so they try to live as if there were a God. But this for Sartre is an evasion. Furthermore, it is not the right kind of sacrifice. Man denies himself so that God may exist, but there is no God, and man is a useless passion.»

Image
Image
Image
Image

«If God does not exist there is nothing left but man. But if God does exist is there anything better for man to do to serve Him than to follow his own deepest spiritual aspirations and potentialities? For centuries man has looked outside into the universe for an answer, but the universe has returned to him only his own image. It is not easy for man to come back and look only within. But if he can find the courage to do so, then, perhaps, on the far side of despair, a new life may begin.»

Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

«Strictly speaking there is no mankind, except retrospectively, but the individual man exists, and by his life, by his actions, he determines not only his own essence, but he helps to contribute to what will have been the essence of mankind. As William James would put it: We will know what man was when the last man has had his last say.»

Journal d'un curé de campagne
Robert Bresson (1951)

Here is something a little bit different. An essay of sorts on John Carpenter's In the Mouth of Madness, or "It MoM", as I like to call it from now on. More precisely it is a look at a few choice scenes and the ideas they evoked for me on this particular viewing, which I think is the appropriate expectation to have when going into this, don't expect a dissertation. Set out to be not much more than a loose string of ideas the end result, while exceeding my ambitions, I would say, is only semi-coherent and not as well-structured as it could be. Supported by the relevant screenshots it is nonetheless very much recommended to already have a good familiarity with the film.

Image
Yes, I dare enter, I'm doomed already!
The principal players:
John Trent - is on a quest
Sutter Cane - writes for a living
Linda Styles - reads for a living
The Word - is spread

Image
Image

The prosaic act of manufacturing consent, incessantly printing whatever, having the tools to do it is king.

Image
Image

This scene being part of the introduction of the protagonist along with his request for a writing tool ("a single black crayon") suggests that he might be the very Cane who is the author of his downfall. You gotta be aware of your demise for the demise to occur. Self-fulfilling prophecy. Any prophecy you really believe in is a self-fulfilling one, is one that becomes real. As real as Trent's nemesis who here is conjured up out of thin air and disappears just as suddenly.

Image
Image
Image

As you get too comfortable, too sure of your autonomy and superiority, that is when the "outside world" intrudes and shatters your illusion by pulling you into the other side, a world of commitment, a world of horror, the horror of discomfort and uncertainty.

Image

As Cane's writing gets printed and distributed and is destined to be popular due to his prior reputation a man's personal apocalypse becomes a society's.

Image
Image
Image

The fiction that captures the imagination of the masses comes in the form of a revelation, an enlightenment, unique and profound. You can see now and you feel seen, this sells any idea(l)s and conclusions and the rest follows almost automatically. The convincing has been done, now the ideals get assimilated. Once convinced the followers do what is in their name, they follow and become the original creator's mouthpieces.

Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

Once you lose your grounding you are susceptible to any ideology of the day, you're liable to wake up anywhere, anywhen. You feel you are losing any control over your destiny and become incapable of making your own decisions.

Image
Image
Image
Image

As you get to mistrust your own instincts you gladly let somebody else get in the driver's seat.

Image

The spiritual side is the other side. The side opposed to the prosaic. God is a superstition, many are saying. God, in this sense becomes the unholy, the power that evokes magic, a force contrary to science and perhaps even the rational. The rational mind fears the halls of church for they represent the Other and the Unknown.

"The boy that you loved is the man that you fear."
- M.M.

Unheimliche Wandlung. - Change is an inevitability but our rational mind fears it. When we compare different states of being shaped by the passing of time the uncanny nature of it puts fear into us, disgusts us. The human ability to ponder the future by looking upon the past as a quasi-present state fills us with discomfort and disgust. A parent raising a child successfully as an autonomous individual comes with a great danger. Should the grown up child harbor any resentment against its parents or ever find a reason for animosity against them then they have raised their own greatest enemy. The master/pupil relationship is aware of this danger and not only acknowledges it but embraces it. As a master to his pupil the parent also must not hold on too tight and stifle the child in developing his potential away from the parent's teachings, lest love turns into hatred and the child may try to cut the ties to the parents in a violent manner, like, for example, by becoming the Antichrist. Not even a father can still stand on the side of his Antichrist son.

The pinecone in religious and mythological symbolism essentially represents the pineal gland, the so-called Third Eye, and relates to enlightenment, resurrection, eternal life and regeneration. Further it is linked to psychedelic substances, the pineal gland itself produces DMT, often called the "Spirit Molecule". It is purported that in old scriptures the pinecone was the original fruit of the Tree of Knowledge from which Adam and Eve ate, which in turn could quite simply represent the consumption of psychedelic mushrooms or other sources of consumable DMT as a means of accelerated human evolution, initiated consciously or unconsciously, but in either case our species at this current stage has to deal with our big brains that have complicated our existence in the world. Anyway, here the pinecones top off giant bed posts, the ultimate symbol of awakening surrounding the place of sleep. The implications are numerous but I'll just put it this way and leave it at that: Trent is tripping inside his creation.

Here I'm starting to go heavy on the parallels between Trent and Cane. No need to lay out all the particularities but Cane can essentially be thought of as Trent's alter ego, John Trent is his real name and Sutter Cane his nom de plume, the pseudonym under which he writes books. He can also be seen as the older version of Trent, but I'll get to this shortly.

Image
Image

You find your purpose by creating it.

Image
Image
Image

To know your path is to understand your death.

Image
Image

Right after Linda Styles is seen getting somewhat intimate with Sutter Cane she makes a pass at Trent. Are we seeing a symbolic representation play out of a marriage between Styles and Trent/Cane. If so this shows the archetypal creative relationship that informs each other, one feeding upon the other.

Image

Because behind every successful man…

Image

Trent can create a new world as well as he can because Linda believes as much in it as he does, making him in turn believe in the world he creates even more and makes him believe in himself, and so on. Now this creation becomes too scary for Linda, she thinks he has gone too far. Trent has pulled her into a world of horror and the only way to break the cycle is something of a dissociation between Trent and Cane. The creation and the man can be said to be the same thing here, Linda doesn't like who the man has become, she wants him to stop, wants to pull the reins on this whole project by making a clear distinction between the man and his alter ego, recognizing that they are not one and the same. Trent, to crassly oversimplify it, is the man she loves, but Cane is the man she admires. A conundrum.

Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

Trent the heavy smoker... figuratively he is obsessed with carrying his own light with him at all times. His real source of light comes in the form of Cane, in the form of Creation. The older self tells the younger self what to do. The old self is the true believer because he already has seen everything come to fruition, has seen his creation come to life. This is prophecy. This is creation of meaning. A personal religion.

Remember the Cane = older Trent idea? The "people on bikes" in the film could be seen as a microcosm of a man's life. The paperboy who is trapped on the road and grows into an old man practically before our eyes. This man/boy is seen in three iterations and I think it is interesting that age-wise Trent as well as Cane fit right in between them and so I'd like to see them as overall five different stages in a man's life, which, as existentialism would have it, aren't very different at all, the bloke is just growing old, doing in a sense the same thing until he croaks, à la Sisyphus.

We got a generation gap thing going. As much as we know that one generation has advantages over the other we are also aware that nobody comes out alive.

Image

Styles (in what I think was her final appearance in the film) rides along with the old guy on the bicycle, further underpinning said interconnections between all those characters. Ride with the Devil? If you can't beat him join him.

Image

Cane's (and in extension Trent's) way of delivering the "Gospel" (Gospel as in, for example, the Gospel of John) involves perhaps more creativity than is required from paperboys, as they are involved in "making" the news, that is to say responsible for putting it on paper, but at points the two are also seen reduced to being mere messengers, postal workers. Cane sends Trent to bring the manuscript to the people (his book publisher) and when Trent burns the manuscript and another copy miraculously has made it to his Motel the next morning we can imagine that Cane was the one who delivered it there.

Image

A Hero's Journey - Trent is on a quest to find himself but he struggles, he still denies his own shadow, tries to run away from his destiny.

+
Image
+
Image

You can add two more iterations to the list of characters representing the Hero. The boy Cane kidnaps, Johnny boy... John. And his purported father who tries to get him back. Visually they all form a relatively consistent lineage, the blond boy's hair gets progressively darker with age and then starts to turn gray with Cane. Starting with Cane he also let's his hair grow longer. The only one of any of these characters to die is the father, via suicide. This is the end of the journey for this metaphorical traveler. He dies inside the world he created and made his own fate. His name is given as Simon. Simon Says? Simon, the one who has the greatest knowledge of his destiny, for he has already lived it, and passes it on to the younger generations. Old guy on the bike arguably looks the oldest, but he also looks unnaturally old. Perhaps an Undead version of the Hero, or it's the Hero from the grave, already decomposing under the earth. Or perhaps the filmmakers just didn't do as convincing a job with the mask as they would have liked to...

Image
Image
Image
Image

Trent planting the seed? - Much like the transfer of idea(l)s from the older to the younger between Cane and Trent, Trent here in one of his final acts imparts the kernel of this knowledge to the child, the ending or death of which is already implied in the very same, inseparable from the path, cuz no life without death.

Image

The writer/creator sees his own creation come to life before his very eyes. HIS life, "like" a movie. How absurd, how hilarious.

Image

"Oh, God!" - Past, present and future all tied up into one package, he can now see the "big picture". Try remain prosaic in that frame of mind...

Misc:
In the Mouth of Madness - I.t.M.o.M. - It Mom - A primal home. The Old Ones.

The publishing firm that sells Sutter Cane's books is called Arcane. Cane - Arcane. Also, is Cane a reference to Cain as in Cain and Abel?

Thank you for reading.
