Carmel's 189 Favourite Songs

#1

Post by Carmel1379 »

Hiya.

PirateJenny making his/her Top 100 got me thinking and now here I am, with a mix of mainstream trash and perhaps some tracks you don’t know yet, generally biased to what I currently enjoy, although sometimes a song relevant to me years ago would sneak in as well. The numbers in front of the tracks were placed there purely for countdown-convenience, I’m not serious about the ranking, my tendency was to go for variety within any given subset of the list. Genres usually taken off rym.

I’ve decided not to count “classical” music, tried to avoid film soundtracks, jazz tracks inextricable from their albums, and anything longer than roughly 20 mins, since that would make it too hard. I know - boo! The following long more-or-less self-contained works — which don’t appear on the list — would probably be in my “top 20 music pieces of all time” any day:
J.S. Bach - Die Kunst der Fuge
The Caretaker - Everywhere at the End of Time
Charles Mingus - The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady
John Coltrane - A Love Supreme
Fryderyk Chopin - Piano Concerto #2
Sergei Rachmaninoff - Piano Concerto #3
Richard Wagner - Tristan und Isolde
etc.

1 per artist, because otherwise this would be an impossible Top 10,000 and not a Top 189. I’m probably forgetting loads, but the thing’s finalised, so let’s go.

Any feedback, recommendations, praise, or derision is appreciated. Enjoy.

I might try to collect the genres list at the end, see if it's actually varied. But yeah, there's gunna be a lot of 'lowbrow' stuff here.^^

No problem, mate. I actually respect people posting their "guilty pleasures" aka "typical mainstream trash" since that gives more credibility to these lists :) Some folks try to appear very cool by bashing everything mainstream which I find really funny.

I'm usually quite insecure about revealing anything, so yeah. tehe In general I suppose people experience a degree of embarrassment to admit they enjoy something with respect to a given social group they engage with at the time, or otherwise desire to signal a particular style/taste. As with most things I guess some sort of equilibrium emerges.

I relistened to that Gil Scott-Heron album recently and gave it a 10/10. In terms of introspective and existential poetry it's hard to be beat. His industrial blues and singer/songwriter songs are just perfect too.

Agreed, it's such a good album. It's the only one of his I've heard so far, I've yet to listen to his older work, although I doubt it will be as tonally deep.

Yeah, there's obviously some nostalgia factor in play (perhaps some are indeed embarrassed by what they had enjoyed back in the day) and why would that bother people? Similarly with movies, I have no problem with mainstream popular films on people's lists and folks watching some blockbusters now and then, unless of course it's only those :D
