Juicy original #1 choice. I've had my Nina Simone streak/discovery a few years ago, but this song somehow slipped under my radar. Explains your username.

'Unfinished Sympathy' is a song that would definitely consistently feature in my top 10 songs (if I ever made such a list) since I'd've been about 12, so it's great seeing it here!

'I Say a Little Player', 'Teenage Riot', Coltrane's 'Acknowledgement', something by Nina Simone, Aphex Twin, Autechre, Bowie, MBV, etc. would probably all find their places in a top 100 of mine too.

Anyway -- great list, I'll delve into it more.

Thanks mate! It's been an interesting way for me just to see what my musical tastes are at the moment! I think most of it kind of developed several years ago with now most discoveries being the few random discoish tracks I've thrown in places. I even threw in a token blues track by BB King - a genre I like more than I listen to - and there were few actual rare groove tracks in there.

Also the only dub/reggae tracks that made it were...
Mad Professor - Radiation Ruling The Nation
Dillinjer - Five Man Army
Johnny Osbourne - Give a Little Love
edit - oh and Janet Kay - Silly Games to get some UK Lovers Rock in there...

Drum and Bass tracks that made it
Source Direct - Stone Killer
Goldie - Inner City Life
Seba & Lotek - Sonic Winds (in my top 10)

And I've realised my only Kratwerk (could have been in my top 10) was Computer World (not my favourite LP whereas at least 3 other Kraftwerk LPs could easily make my top 10. With the Nina Simone track - there's several that could have been number one (notably Sinnerman) but that just came into my head at the start of this year when I was accused of malicious communications online by the poilce. I read it in a random book I found in hosptial and it tells a story about a woman who thinks if she kills her masters everything will be ok based on a song by Brecht & Kurt Weil so...

Hip hop tracks that made it

Smiff n Wessun - Bucktown
Digable Planets - What Cool Breezes Do
Jungle Brothers - Sunshine
Wu Tang - Protect Ya Neck

hmm... could have had some more in there but.. :)

Coming back the other way - realising there's a lot of rare groove I've missed...

But starting with

highly unusual top 10. can't get behind your #1 pick. very unmusical. possibly inferior to everything else on the list :P
I've re-ranked the top 10, will listen to the rest afterwards:
Massive Attack & Shara Nelson - Unfinished Sympathy
Jamie Principle & Adrienne Jett - Your Love
Aretha Franklin - Say a Little Prayer
Eric Clapton - Layla (I only really like the Dominos epic)
Autechre - Autriche
Sonic Youth - Teenage Riot
Seba & Lotek - Sonic Winds
Derrick May - Strings of Life (your title says Strings of the Strings of Life which is different and more downtempo)
Aphex Twin - Rhubarb
Nina Simone - Pirate Jenny

currently working towards a vegan/low waste world + thru such film lists (besides TV): 2010s bests, RW Fassbinder, Luis Bunuel, Yasujiro Ozu, Eric Rohmer, Visual Effects nominees, kid-related stuff, great animes (mini-serie or feature), very 80s movies, 17+ sci-fi lists on watchlist, ENVIRO, remarkable Silent Films and Pre-Code (exploring 1925 atm) and every shorts and docu list I'm aware of and

What can I say? Piratre Jenny is theatrical as it gets! I prefer Strings of the Strings of Life too, more tension without the beat.

I'm Eric Clapton's second cousin and still don't listen to that much Domino's stuff, but it's special for that reason.

I have a mind block posting rare groove stuff as there was one vocal sample I really liked froma rare groove track I've forgotten.

Love the last 3 choices. However, I prefer Reload over Global Communication.

I was very close to choosing a Reload track and also Link - Amenity, which is an all time favourite.
Richie Hawtin chose it as a funeral tack!

heh, that's actually where I discovered who actually sings the song :) I quite like that film despite its poor reviews, great thriller IMO.

Yeah that's Conny Plank production (Vienna). Amazing track. The whole list needs some revision though. I chose a few for obscurity thinking I needed to fill the list and that obscutiry makes it a gem, but I'm not happy with when looking at what I missed (example some from KMS there are several Kevin Saunderson tracks that could have taken it's place). And then I remember I had no Carl Craig tunes on the list so far at all when this could have been in my top 10 (was trying to keep the detroit techno to a minimum as otherwise it would be half my list).

128. 69 Desire
