My review of Marvel's Spider-Man which I gave a 6/10 (D:)
Marvel's Spider-Man is a game so inspired by games such as the recent Batman series, Shadow of Mordor, and Mad Max that I was very surprised to learn that it was not published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. On one hand, I was turned off by the lack of innovation because of this, which I feel is also apparent with the slew of recent superhero films, but on the other hand I enjoyed this type of gameplay, and as a result welcomed it. Near the beginning of the game it was done so well that I was willing to call it a masterpiece. However, it eventually started to feel like a chore.

Surprisingly, the best part of the game is simply traversing throughout the game world. I find that open world games has recently become the standard, but the world and the method of travelling fails to make the world engaging. At that point, fast travel becomes the norm as you just want to get from point a to b faster. I never had this problem here. The way Spider-Man swings and runs on buildings is something that I never got tired of. In fact, I never even used the fast-travel.

The combat is another aspect that I really admired. If you enjoy the combat of the games listed in the first paragraph, then this is something you will also enjoy. It actually more in-depth as you can utilize webs, gadgets, or air attacks from swinging. Fighting is a huge portion of the game in both the main story and the side quests, but I was always having fun doing it. I also enjoyed the fact that there are even moments where you play other characters, and stealth sequences that although can be shallow, are always welcoming to me.

It is also in-depth in terms of Spider-Man himself. On top of the standard RPG tropes such as a leveling system with skills to choose from, you can also unlock and upgrade gadgets. There is also the suit itself. You have many suits to choose from with each of them having their own power. The best part is that you can interchange the powers with the suits, meaning that the suit is purely for aesthetic reasons as opposed to choosing one because it has the best power-ups. My favourite suit was the noir one. On top of this, you can choose 3 more power-ups. This includes decreasing damage, or my favourite one, slowing down time after performing a perfect dodge.

However, there is a flaw with all the skills, gadgets, and suit power-ups. I find that the normal difficulty had just the right amount of challenge. However, I was on edge quite often during combat. Especially during the 2nd half of the game. I find myself never utilizing them, especially the power-ups, as I wanted to just keep myself alive. This also has to do with focus. With focus you can either do a finisher on an enemy, or use it to heal yourself. I always used it for the latter, and kept saving it up in case I needed it.

There are tons of side quests and collectables to do as well, and for the most part it was a success. They give plenty of motivation for the collectables by giving you both xp and tokens which are needed to unlock or upgrade things. I can't really fault the game for doing this, as it was my play style, but I found myself doing all the side quests and collectables as I unlocked them. This ended up making the game feel like a chore. However, you could blame the game for this as well due to the motivation it gives you to complete them. I felt compelled to collect them all as they were unlocked. I found the ones that seem the most boring to be the most fun, such as collecting pigeons, as it improved your world-traversing skills, or the bases which had pure combat. The research stations however were quite underwhelming even if they had variety. The side quests range from very fun to underwhelming. I especially enjoyed the one about an internet streamer.

I know I will get a lot of flak for saying this, but I also did not enjoy the story whatsoever. However, I am somewhat of a snob and loathe the recent superhero films, so take this with a grain of salt. It has the standard tropes, and aiming for sympathy and making Spider-Man relatable, which I find to be shallow as I prefer to see different perspectives on people and their motivations, rather than liking someone because they think like me or go through the same things. The twists can be obvious, with the good guys not actually being good. Their reasoning are also given to you like a pill. Spider-Man's banter was also annoying to me. I especially hated the scenes with Mary Jane and the rocky "relationship". It felt cringey, but not in a good way. However, I really enjoyed Just the Facts with J. Jonah Jameson. It was incredibly entertaining hearing his banter and the interviews.

This is a game that I can easily see why people would love it. In fact, I can recommend this to people that enjoyed the recent Batman games, or love superheroes. It is just something that I grew tired of eventually.

So I had a review made it under the most viewed list on a website, and 3 of them made it under most recommended. Maybe I actually do have some talent with this.

If I don't get the job I applied for then I decided that I'm gonna risk it. I'll get a capture card and start making youtube reviews.

Nah there's no way I could stream. I lack the pizzazz and video game skill for that. I'm gonna make my first video review on Harvester. I found a good program where the output is at 400 mb per hour. Quality isn't 100% the best at this output, but it's a mid 90s FMV game so I don't think the highest quality is required. I'll try higher quality if I ever play any new PC games.

why had I not heard of that game before you mentioned it? it looks the best kind of bonkers. cult game cults need to up their marketing game.

It didn't receive much initial attention cause it was a late FMV game, except for some controversy. It did make some lists of being one of the most violent games ever, but I guess people forgot about it because they assumed that's all there was? It's actually a very smart game, and yes, bonkers in the best way possible. It is a cult classic now, but yea outside of GOG it didn't get much attention. Same thing with Blade of Darkness which I think was removed from GOG unfortunately. Maybe I'll make that my next video review.

That kids-eating-their-mother sequence in Harvester is wonderfully nuts.

Finished the game and I have my microphone :) wrote the script too which is expanded on my game review. Just need to edit all the highlights I've listed into clips and then bring it all together. I'm new to editing so maybe I'll be done in 2 weeks? I hope so.

Dunno what to review next. Either Severance Blade of Darkness or Spycraft: The Great Game.

I have a very important question about how to approach this review. Should I only include the in-game text with me talking over it, or have breaks with me showing the game's audio. I'll show an example.

Basically, 95% of this game is text with the actors speaking them with audio.

For example, I have to mention that the lead character has amnesia. Should I mention that while showing the clip seen below with only my audio?

Image

The other option is, show another clip with me mentioning amnesia, and then play the clip from the image above in its entirety, with the audio of the character saying that he has amnesia.

Is the audio important to the game experience, or is it just "there" and the text on the screen does the same thing?

They recite the lines shown on the text. I feel like the latter approach may be better as people might not focus on the text without the actors reciting them. I'm just worried that it'll make the review too long. That and the editing will be more complex.

Yeah, I'd not worry about the audio if they're just reading the text on the screen.

After a 2 month break I’ve been getting into OSRS again. My brother has been playing again too so we’ve been helping each other out. He was doing Motherlode Mine and then moved to Shilo Village to do gems and has been making a few mil a day, and I’ve been following in his footsteps. Aiming for 100 nuggets to buy gem bag and hit 91 last night. Also spent a day getting 100% favour in the last few Kourend places so that whole thing is finally done after a lot of grinding and pain. Up to 198 quest points now too since I love questing so much but most of the stuff I have left is ‘fight scary monster’ or I have to level up other skills. I always forget how addictive Runescape is until it’s too late.

So I actually might be done with the review. My audio is a bit awful. I'm not good at talking yet, and I had to do a separate take for every sentence and then try to make them blend seamlessly. The game background music helped quite a bit with that. I also a) hate my voice, and b) just realized how Canadian I sound. I say those like dose, and both like bof.

I'll try to upload it tonight. All depends on how fast it'll take to encode and upload. I'll be very happy to receive any feedback, but I'm sure that learning to talk better is just something that comes with practice. I've seen Brad Shoemaker's first video review and he was also awful.

Boy do you ever sound Canadian...

The review itself is pretty cool - and I really like the way you ended it. But I do agree with you that your voice work could use a little tweaking. I did a little bit of voice directing at a prior job, so I have a few bits of advice:

- Watch your breath. I heard you getting breathy in a couple spots, so try to be a little mindful of how you exhale when recording. When I was being the voice recorded, I got this feedback a lot; it's just a little trial and error to see what works for you.
- At the end of a lot of your sentences, you trail off a bit and get quieter. This is natural for the way most of us talk, but it makes cutting together several sentences sound a bit awkward. Try and concentrate on speaking at a consistent volume throughout what you're reading.
- This might sound weird, but stand up while you're recording and gesture the way you would if you were giving this review to a friend. It'll help animate you and make you sound more energetic.
- I can tell by the words you're saying that you're excited about this game, but your tone doesn't convey that - you sound flat and clinical. Get excited when you're talking about the cool parts; the gameplay problems you talk about at the end are fine to sound a bit flatter, but you could also be a little exasperated.

So that's what I have. That game sounds pretty cool, to be honest. I also think you made the right call in going with the voice instead of text alone.

Thanks. I actually was standing while doing it but I wasn't animated.

I felt discouraged when I first heard the recording. Still, this guy is one of the best game critics, and look at this. Def made me feel better.

I'm losing subscribers  but it makes sense. Mine used to be a music channel. I posted a lot of Eastern European music and has those kinds of people subscribed to my channel. Makes sense that they would leave now that I deleted all the videos and started doing video game reviews.

Next review will be on Spycraft: The Great Game. I'll probably do one more PC game after and then start doing console games.

For the voice work, I tried doing longer takes, which failed at times, and instead of just reading from my phone I memorized them and started using body language. It barely made any difference though. I guess it really is just practice.

I also decided to throw in a shitty joke.

Bought Mario Party and Mario Kart for the Switch and have had a few game nights with my boyfriend the last few nights. Both are pretty fun, though I miss the original Mario Party. It was cool seeing some of the classic Mario Kart courses remade like the Moo Moo one. Also played some Rocket League with him and though I've played on Steam a bit years ago, I enjoyed it a lot more now and kinda want to play more and try and get half decent at it. And then I went ahead and bought Stardew Valley for the Switch and am enjoying chillin' out on there. Played a decent chunk on Steam but it's much nicer playing on the TV with a console. Forgot how hard it was to make money and the fishing drives me insane.

Decided to buy a few effects for like $20 so I have an intro and a fancier way to show the score. This was so much harder to edit for some reason. The footage I had with my voice was troublesome to time together well. I still think I'm improving though.

Is it just me or does halo suck. The enemies are bullet sponges, the level design layouts are confusing and drab, and even repeats, and the driving on the xbox is incredibly awkward.

XxX I just played a Taiwanese point-and-click horror game called "Detention" which mixes animated (multiple kinds of animation) with FMV elements in a consistently surreal way. Add in the sociopolitical elements and it's definitely up your alley IMO. Plus you can play it in 3-4 hours.
