Easily the most depressing song about food. Especially when you see what the actual meaning of the song is (the death of your parents and the childhood memories of them)

I know of course this is a cover, but for years as a child I thought this song was the original. We listened soooo much to this guy at home in the 80's and early 90's.

Skipping this one. Don't think there's any overlap between my parents and I when it comes to music :)

I heard this song at least a hundred times as a young child, but I never knew the name of it until I texted my mom about it yesterday.

One of the last strong memories I have associated with my mom and music was watching the 1956 Carousel with her; I knew she liked it, she had made references to it before, but she broke down sobbing through much of it - there were deep memories and sadness there, and she wouldn't tell me anything specific about the source of it, and I knew it wasn't the time. Unfortunately I never found the time to ask some of these questions -

My dad likes musicals as well but I'm not sure what besides The Sound of Music counts as a favorite for him, and I don't care. Fuck him. So here's a sort of reversal of the theme - this is a song that I remember hearing on the radio, riding in the car of my "uncle" (really mom's cousin) Ed, and my mom and dad and brother, most like at Christmastime 1977, or in the summer of 1978. I have a powerful, powerful memory of my dad just suddenly switching the radio off without asking - he HATED country music and I think disliked female pop singers generally, while Ed and most of that part of the family were country fans. But Ed didn't say anything, didn't want to rock the boat, even though it was his car and he had consciously chosen the station. And I spent years (remember, pre-internet days) trying to figure out what the song was and who sang it (not being into country at all myself for a long time). But I finally figured it out and it still holds a special place for me, and represents a lot about my (non)relationship with my father, who of course did not respond (he never does) after I sent him a birthday card last week. Again - fuck him.

I always thought it strange that my parents were huge Steve Winwood fans and I never really got it. I mean, it's alright, but he's always been a little bland to me. Like, I'd try to listen, but my mind would always get bored and wander off. Anyways, here's Blind Faith..

This is a little off-beat, but there's a couple of albums with leftist pacifist anarchist rabble-rouser wobblie Utah Phillips tells stories accompanied by Ani DiFranco on guitar and occasional refrain.

Here's a sample:
