what the hell, why didn't I know about these Autechre releases D; but you were right with that post from like a year ago, they'll keep increasing the length of their albums exponentially until they crack some sort of time-space fault-line, and if we manage to make it out alive we'll switch our calendar dating system to Pre-Autechre-∞ and Post-Autechre-∞.

Not counting the Autechre live releases as separate entries, I found the first masterpiece of 2019.

Playboi Carti's Die Lit is a masterpiece. Experimental trap rap reduced to ad libs.

I don’t get why people are so hype about it, or why the hype keeps growing. I heard it when it came out and yeah, it slaps, but is it really a masterpiece? Cardi’s vocals are kind of a neat too, but what musical aspects of this album blow all the competition out of the water? Don’t get me wrong, it’s a cool album, but the insane hype seems unwarranted.

I find his vocals to be more of an instrument rather than vocals. I guess this is from listening to foreign music or metal music with unintelligible vocals, not to mention other genres like shoegaze. The production is also fantastic. I see it compared to the work of the composer Carl Stone, and I kind of have to agree. His vocals and the production complement each other extremely well.

It might also be because I thought 2018 was a weak year for hip hop, so it's nice to hear something fantastic from that year.

I can’t say I know Carl Stone, so I’ll have to ask you to elaborate, sorry. Additionally, as for his voice being an instrument, it would be one of tremendously limited range, right? And a fairly commonplace sound?

Loop a sample of this, add some 808s and you have a beat Plaboi Carti could use.

Yes, it would be one that has a limited range, and not only commonplace, but a repetitive sound. But I can think of many instruments like that: percussion instruments. It adds to the music, and as a whole is gorgeous.

Sorry I can’t access YouTube links (or whatever it is) right now. An percussion is an interesting analogy, hmm. I just don’t see how it tops Platinum Flame or Stuck.

Found that percussion idea elaborated on a review of his self-titled mixtape:
There's so much subtlety in this record. Its production is some of the best and most gorgeous electronic music I've heard in years, a full-bodied enhancement of OG Clams Casino that makes me remember trap at its best is just as avant-garde as anything on RVNG. If you're not paying attention, everything might sound similar, but eventually you can start to discern different emotional and signifying textures in the music.

That's not even mentioning Carti's words and sounds, all of which are both extremely complex and repetitive enough to have the same effect as, say, Steve Reich's Music For 18 Musicians, or shoegaze—ambient not through simplicity or space, but through a latticework of sound that overwhelms until normalized. Hell, in a way, Carti is like a human Jlin: all rhythm and the platonic idea of percussivity, with everything else discarded. Even I haven't gotten to internalizing all that, and I won't pretend to.

This is an album that should remind you how odd it is that hip-hop—and especially this current version, which weaponizes the human voice so well—is the dominant popular music. Music this weird should not be chart pop. And yet, here we are. Listen to the kids.

Wait wait wait, I assumed we were meme-ing, you *actually* think all that about Die Lit? (or Playboy Carti in general?)
(@fori, I think you're misreading the "hype." "Die Lit = AOTY" is a silly/sarcastic meme that's gotten popular lately, with some other variations being "Total Xanarchy = Album of the Year" or "KOD = Album of the Year" - the last one is pretty harsh IMO, but I guess J. Cole is too earnest and not ironic enough for the meme-ing crowd?)

Also, Greta Van Fleet won Best Rock Album at the Grammys. That made me do a spit take. But, um, on the bright side...congratulations to Kacey Musgraves! Well deserved IMO.

Aww man, they did?? Ugh. Wolfmother sucked balls over a decade ago when they trotted out the lame Zeppelin nostalgia, never thought it would be this popular another time around. But then again all of the nominees in this year's Best Rock Album category were utterly laughable.

My favorite was Negro Swan by Blood Orange (LGBT-themed R&B - check out the single Charcoal Baby). Actually, I'd put the Grammy's winner, Golden Hour, at #2 or #3 just behind it. I've been a fan of Kacey Musgraves ever since she released "Follow Your Arrow" and her new album knocked it out of the park. I usually hate the Grammy winners, so good for them? (or me I guess?)

Why did people keep writing songs after The Rolling Stones released Satisfaction? That song said it all.

The final part of The Caretaker's 6 album project is coming out in 5 hours. This isn't anticipation. This is dread.

Listening to the entire series in a row now to build up to it. May have more thoughts later but depending on how the last part will be this may be my new favourite musical project.

The use of repeating tracks but putting them in a different mood is brilliant. I'll link some examples later on.

This series so far is pretty much the most emotionally affecting music I've heard so far.

He may have removed the page for another reason. The music represents memories. At the final stage all memories are now gone. Maybe the bandcamp page will only have the final album.

Here's an example of a track being repeated 5 times in the first 3 stages. The first part sounds normal, the 2nd part is depressing, the 3rd is anxiety-inducing, the 4th is incomprehensible, and the 5th ambience is starting to take over.

Anyone happen to know what are the good Egyptian music acts, or if there's a good list of albums (top ranked albums egypt?)? Or just the whole Northern Africa?
I found this comp:
https://www.discogs.com/Various-The-Rou ... ase/933811
And one artist: Hamza el Din, Khamis El Fino
Image
currently working thru such film lists (besides TV): 2010s bests, RW Fassbinder, Luis Bunuel, Yasujiro Ozu, Eric Rohmer, Visual Effects nominees, kid-related stuff, great animes (mini-serie or feature), very 80s movies, 17+ sci-fi lists on watchlist, ENVIRO, remarkable Silent Films and Pre-Code (exploring 1925 atm) and every shorts and docu list I'm aware of and
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=1434
and "Gordon" Liu Chia-Hui/Liu Chia-Liang and Yuen Woo-ping and "Sammo" Hung Kam-bo
