It's the conservative government doing this, so I don't know if that's meant to be sarcastic or not.
My point has nothing to do with political bias but rather that I believe some people are more than happy to exaggerate a step in the wrong direction in order to have something to complain about. Rather than discussing these issues from a point of view grounded in reality it becomes a lot of hyperbole with comments such as "soon we'll only be able to view BBC/Government websites". I think that type of comment does more damage than good in the fight against censorship.

I was not serious but the reality is the authorities do believe in more censorship and control of torrents, unauthorised sports channels, streaming services and so on.

Out of interest, what do you think the position of the authorities should be on illegal torrents and streaming?

I'm not advocating censoring them and I think they have plenty more important things to worry about. I think that if we are arguing against censorship then we should be focusing on things that are actually being censored (like porn) than things that are being blocked that people are trying to steal for free (again, I'm not saying I am against that downloading etc. but it's a lot harder to argue against even if you download films yourself).

My understanding is that web blocks are not done through the court system but through directives and rightsholders requests, which put the burden of proof on injured parties and stifle speech. I don't know if that's actually illegal in the uk, but it's certainly an immoral abuse of power by both corporations and the government.

The reality is they are fighting a losing battle, and thought should be given for a new way for music and film copyholders to be paid, but I do not know what that is.

The Netherlands has a more sensible approach:

http://torrentfreak.com/downloading-mov ... ds-121221/

. Presently, copyright holders in the Netherlands are compensated through a “piracy tax” on blank media such as CDR media and writable DVDs.

In October it was decided that this piracy tax will be extended to a variety of other media storage devices such as tablets, smartphones, USB-drives, PCs and Laptops. The money that’s collected, up to 5 euro per device, will be distributed to copyright holders.

This is the way ahead in my view

I'm not sure about all the details. I know that Virgin (ISP) gives the reason for blocking The Pirate Bay and similar torrent sites as being "court orders".

I think the more recent news stories may be different.

I hate Comcast, but they did double my speeds when I threatened to leave, so that was nice. If only the service was halfway reliable.

What the??? I thought my internet was absolute crap (right now 14 Mbps of download speed) because in Portugal I had 50 and my friend had 100 Mbps. Now I see that I have a better internet connection then many European countries
Edit: Internet coverage is horrible but I bet that Australia isn't any better.

If only. And if only those speeds you get on speedtest were sustainable. Comcast has this "boost" that they give you right in the beginning when you download something and then they scale back to "normal". It is of course entirely coincidental that speedtest.net gets this boost when you run it.

Try streaming some Netflix for 30 minutes or so, stop, wait a minute (to ensure that no traffic remains) and then run speedtest again. I could barely muster 1 mbps when I did that on our Comcast cable some 5 years ago, but the initial boost was always something close to 40mpbs.

Nope, but it was a local server, tested another one now, 6ms, so pretty solid pings. Foreign servers are a bit worse of course, about 15ms.
